Iola Spafford (British, b.1930) - 'Seascape with Yachts', oil on panel, signed, approx. 50x65cm, framed. NB: Iola Spafford lives in Wilmslow she studied at The Slade School of Art from 1950-54, and been a member of The Royal Cambrian Academy since 1983, also a member of The Manchester Academy of Fine Art, she has exhibited at The Royal Academy in London and has had eight solo exhibitions at The Tib Lane Gallery, in Manchester

A MAHOGANY EIGHT DAY LONGCASE CLOCK THOMAS SCOTT, GAINSBOROUGH the 31cm breakarched and painted dial signed Thos Scott Gainsboro with date sector and subsidiary seconds dial, in broken line inlaid case with swan neck pediment and brass mounted pillars and pilasters, on panelled base and ogee feet, 254cm h, early 19th c, the case later++The dial and movement original to one another, the seascape recessed slightly to accommodate lunar work or other, now lacking, the movement apparently complete although very dusty, modified to strike on the coiled wire gong secured to the backboard. The seat board probably the same date as the Edwardian case. Case of good quality and fine preservation. Consigned from a substantial 18th c Lincolnshire country house and in the family's possession for several generations. Sold with pendulum and two weights
19th century mahogany longcase clock having broken swan neck pediment opening to reveal painted dial, the painted arch dial depicting castle with sentry and seascape having rolling ship under full sail, the dial with black Roman numerals, Arabic subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture below, with floral painted spandrels, having eight-day striking movement, the trunk with ebony stringing and flame mahogany door over box base, 212cm high
*Germany, Nuremberg, Hans Jamnitzer (Master HG), Minos and Scylla, lead roundel, signed and dated 1569, Minos on horseback, wearing armour and wielding a baton, riding towards a fortified tower from the battlements of which Scylla beckons to him; on the right is a standing warrior behind which is a group of soldiers with lances; in the foreground sit two warriors viewed from behind; on the left is the narrator of the story, gesturing towards Minos and behind him is a group of three females gesturing towards two more; in the background under a raised horizon is a seascape with ships, sea monsters and rocky islands with towns and castles; signed and dated on a tree stump in the foreground, 1569/H G, 170mm (Weber 271; Braun (von Moltheim coll.) pl. 26, 114; Wenzel Jamnitzer exhibition catalogue, GNM 1985, 557), pierced, a few minor edge bends, an extremely fine contemporary cast of high quality and finely patinated Ex Frédéric Spitzer collection, Anderson Galleries, New York, 9-12 January 1929, lot 328 ($12.50) and subsequently in the John Woodman Higgins Armory collection, sold Thomas Del Mar Ltd, 20th March 2013, lot 134. The roundel is found with or without (as here) an ornate border. A very similar lead example without the border was in the Rosenheim sale, Sotheby’s, 1923, lot 785.
