A fresh wind drives changeable clouds and creates an atmosphere of a romantic challenge to man and technology. Canvas, oil. Signed and dated Carl Baage 1863 in the lower right corner of the painting. Maarten van Heemskerck, Philips Galle - Series: Jonah and the Whale - 1566 / Description: Complete of four engravings included the famous scene with the whale.1.Jonah fleeing the presence of the Lord; the Lord appears in the sky at upper left and Jonah turns and flees; a seascape with a ship on a rough sea 2.Jonah cast on shore by the whale; a monstrous fish regurgitates Jonah on to dry land overseen by the Lord above. 3. The people of Nineveh repenting upon hearing the prophecies of Jonah; Jonah stands in a street with his arm outstretched and is surrounded by alarmed figures kneeling, bowing over and clasping their hands; at right is the King of Nineveh in a columned building: 'When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust... 4. Jonah complaining under the gourd; Jonah sits, at left, in the shade under a vine and looks down upon a vast and magnificent cityscape; the Lord appears in the sky above. A FINE BUILDER'S WATERLINE MODEL FOR THE M.V. CHULMLEIGH BUILT FOR THE ATLANTIC SHIPPING & TRADING CO. (TATEM SHIPPING LTD) BY WILLIAM DOXFORD & SONS, SUNDERLAND, 1946the 55in. laminated and carved hull with lined and lacquered boxwood decks, complete with gold plated fittings as appropriate, including winches, bits, ventilators, deck rails etc., superstructure with helm binnacle, telegraphs and range finder, rigged derricks, stayed funnel with Tatem insignia, engine room lights, four fitted lifeboats in davits and other details, mounted on a moulded and painted seascape within original glazed case with ivorine plates – 18 x 63 x 14in. (46 x 160 x 35.5cm.); together with an associated later stand -- 48in. (122cm.) high(2)Launched as Empire Northfleet, she was renamed Chulmleigh (after the village where James Tatem, founder of the firm, was born in 1868) almost immediately and worked for Tatem Shipping until 1961 when sold and renamed Rugeley. In 1964 she was about to be renamed Madura but was wrecked by a typhoon at Lanto near Hong Kong on the 28th May. She was raised and broken up at Hong Kong that August. Fine original condition throughout, minor wear to case varnish.
A Minton blue and white glazed tile panoramic seascape, depicting men on a fishing boat with many further boats on the horizon, comprising of 95 tiles each measuring 6"², signed Mintons Ld lower left, approximately 350cm long by 61cm high. Provenance : Commissioned by Sir James Knott, 1st Baronet (1855 - 1934), shipping magnate and Conservative Party politician, for his home in Cullercoats. CONDITION REPORT: Requiring extensive restoration. This was removed from the wall in Sir James Knott's former home many years ago during renovations to the property, and the tiles have been in storage since. There are many cracks and damages to the tiles. Brown parcel tape was applied to the tiles during dismantling to prevent them crumbling apart. We have decided to leave this tape in place to prevent further losses. Many tiles have rough cement stuck to their backs. A monochrome photograph showing the tiles in their original setting is shown in the additional images.
