Arktis - Antarktis - - Anatole Alfred Théodore Delangle (zugeschr.). Vor Anker liegendes Schiff in einer Polarlandschaft. 1872. Feder, Aquarelle und Gouache auf grünlichem Papier. 29,5 x 48,5 cm. Arctic - Antarctic - Anchored ship in a polar landscape. Pen-and-ink, watercolours and gouache on greenish paper. Signed and dated. Fully mounted on backing. - The ship bears the tricolour. In the foreground and background several glaciers are depicted, drawing strange shapes, which gives the watercolour a spectacular appearance. It is most likely a work by the painter Anatole Alfred Théodore Delangle (1828-1901), who exhibited landscapes and engravings at the Paris Salons from 1869 to 1884. A former sergeant major in the marines, he was promoted to captain during the siege of Paris and commanded a battalion of the National Guard during the Commune. - The motif depicted does not appear to be associated with a French polar expedition or a foreign polar mission, such as the US-funded Polaris Expedition (1871-1872) or the Austro-Hungarian Expedition (1872-1874). It could be an illustration draft for a book published at the same time as Isaac Israel Hayes' "Perdus dans les glaces". - Isolated inconspicuous brown spotting. Stimulating and beautifully preserved composition with fine excellent details.

Prussia - Berlin - Royal Rifle Manufactory Potsdam. Pen-and-ink drawing, watercolours and gouache on paper. Signed and dated.
