Beresford (Louisa Ann, Marchioness of Waterford, 1818-1891). Pre-Raphaelite watercolourist and philanthropist. Manuscript diary, January 1855 - October 1861, giving generally brief day-to-day notes of activities, family events, health, visits, etc., with a few small pen & black ink sketches, one with watercolour, mentioning various social engagements and visits, also describing attending events at the local school and church, theatre visits, charitable works, visits to Highcliffe (her family home), London, France, Italy, Scotland etc., visits from and to her sister 'Char.' [Charlotte, Countess Canning], numerous mentions of drawing children, animals etc., frequent visits to a nearby blind girl, 'Blind Joy', visits to exhibitions and collections, with descriptions of artworks and artefacts seen, approx. 350pp., contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, heavily rubbed, 8voQty: (1)Footnote: Less is known about Louisa, Lady Waterford, than about her sister Charlotte. Augustus J.C. Hare published a biography of the two sisters in 1893 titled The Story of Two Noble Lives in which he states that, 'Of the life of the younger sister, Louisa, Lady Waterford, the want of material makes it impossible to give the detailed account which might be looked for. She left scarcely any journals, and all her correspondence with her husband, and most of that with her mother and sister, has been destroyed.' Clearly, this journal, recently discovered in private hands, escaped that fate. Louisa married Lord Waterford ('W' in the diary) in 1842 and they lived together in his family home at Curraghmore House, Ireland where she became known for her philanthropy and concern for the poor; in her diary she mentions visits to sickbeds and the clothing club she set up, amongst other charitable works. Louisa also showed talent as an artist and through a friendship with John Ruskin she was introduced her to Rossetti, Millais and Watts, who all thought highly of her. Sadly, Lord Waterford died in a riding accident on 29 March 1859, her diary entry reading, 'W. set out on his cart for the hunt ... Mr. Pepleson [?] brought me the dreadful news. All over!!'; and on Friday 1 April, 'Mama came & the Shrewsburys - dreadful time. Broken hearted'. Lady Waterford had already endured one sad parting when in 1855 her sister Charlotte left London to travel with her husband to India. Charlotte died in India in November 1861, just after this diary ends.

Lot 1

840x1800mm Framed. India Ink and white Emulsion. IMPORTANT CONDITION OF SALE FOR THIS LOT: This piece forms part of the artist's A Level portfolio and must be retained by the school until October 2022. The purchaser of this piece will be given an identically framed replica which will be exchanged for the original once this is available. The replica will be produced following the sale of the piece, and may take up to 14 days. ARTIST STATEMENT: This is my first experience of life drawing. I was immediately captured by the beauty of the forms of the female body, which I had been so used to seeing in an idealised and/or sexualized way. I found joy in looking at a woman's body as it is and appreciating it as a piece of art. The middle piece is more calm and still, while the other two have a lot more energy and movement. This is partly because I did them on different weeks, and at the session where I used the white emulsion, my tic disorder was very active, so I was flicking paint and ink everywhere. I had to relinquish a certain degree of control and just keep painting. ABOUT THE ARTIST: This piece is Shortlisted in the 2021 Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize in Guernsey. Anya created this piece aged 18 while a student at Ladies College.

"My father, Paul Birkbeck, who has died aged 80, was an artist and illustrator whose work is familiar to those of a certain generation brought up on BBC childrens TV programmes such as Crystal Tipps and Alistair, Play School and Jackanory. His distinctive style and keen eye for detail ensured that he became one of the BBCs most-used artists through the 1970s and 80s. Born in Woolwich, south-east London, Paul attended Brighton College and Epsom School ofArt. After completing his national service, he also became the banjo player for the Dedicated Men Jugband, who signed to Pye Records in 1965. The bands single, Boodle Am Shake, did not trouble the charts but Paul soon began designing sleeves for Decca Records. In 1965 working with BBC childrens TV he became a prolific illustrator for its programmes. For Jackanory he illustrated 14 stories, including A Dog So Small (read by Judi Dench) and Peter Pan, (some in this sale), as well as the BBC Sunday afternoon Bible stories series In the Beginning. His work for Jackanory continued for many years. He created the memorable opening titles for The Vikings in 1980, presented by Magnus Magnusson, and the iconic Miss Marple series, starring Joan Hickson. Paul also drew the backgrounds for the ground-breaking TV series Jane, starring Glynis Barber, which mixed cartoon backgrounds with live actors and was based on the 1940s comic strip of the same name. (some in this sale). In 1991, as well as supplying illustrations, he was in front of the camera playing himself each week in the BBCs six-part childrens TV history programme Now Then, an educational show that cleverly brought our ancestors to life. Paul taught illustration at Leicester Polytechnic, Epsom College and the Royal College of Art, but continued to work in TV, including delivering the titles for the Stanley Baxter Show on Channel 4. Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (1889-1946)A Flooded Trench on the YserPen and ink on laid paper, 1914-15, signed in ink lower right, sheet 154 x 190mm (6 x 7 ½ in)Provenance:Private collection UK.The present work is a preparatory study for the oil painting Flooded Trench on the Yser of 1915 and for the later etching of 1916. This method of working a promising study up from a preparatory ink drawing to a final oil was usual for Nevinson. The work depicts the aftermath of the Belgian Government's decision to open the dikes to the North Sea in late October 1914, the torrent of water flooded a twenty mile stretch of land north of Ypres from Nieuport to Dixmude. The action was taken to try to slow the rapid progression of the German advance toward Ypres and Dunkirk and it was moderately successful. Nevinson was in the area in November 1914 whilst working with the Friends' Ambulance Unit, and it's likely that he saw the scene depicted early in November, as by January 1915 he had returned to the UK due to his chronic rheumatism. There are a number of slight differences between the present work and the two later versions, the first and most obvious is the absence of the Hokusai-esque rain that cuts through the composition of both later works. Nevinson was a great admirer of Hokusai and it's likely that this element was not included in this present work as Nevinson wanted to look at examples of woodcuts featuring similar rain effects back in London, most likely Hokusai's Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi bridge and Atake. Another area of interest are the four small shell explosions in the horizon line which are missing from both the oil and the later etching, they are in the later works changed to barbed wire fence posts. We are very grateful to Dr. Jonathan Black, author of C.R.W. Nevinson The Complete Prints, for his assistance in the cataloguing of this work.

Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Life Model Nottingham School of Art, charcoal, 52 x 37cm, laid down on the original mount with rectangular purple ink stamp inscribed Student's surname - Knight and Age 21, Registration No 3597, Subject No 8c2, unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor This highly accomplished life study by Harold Knight is almost certainly of the half blind Jack Price, or Mark Wharley, both of whom were hired by the Nottingham School of Art as models for its Life Class. At this period only male students could attend the School's Life Class. His fellow student Laura Knight recalled (Oil Paint and Grease Paint, 1936) "If the men worked from the living figure I had to go in to the Antique Room; the hatred of those plaster figures stays with me today - I never got any benefit out of their study..." After she left the School, Laura Knight employed Jack Price as a model. He was the first naked figure she drew. In lieu of a fee, she gave him some of her studies to sell (The Magic of a Line, 1965) Since Harold Knight was born on the 27th November 1874, the present drawing, which gives his age as 21 means the South Kensington Exhibition must have been sometime from 25th November to 31st December 1895 To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition

Heinrich Kley 1863 Karlsruhe - 1945 München Der Ameisenhaufen. um 1910. Tuschfederzeichnung über Spuren von Bleistift. Rechts oben signiert. Links unten betitelt. Auf dünnem Zeichenkarton. 41,4 x 32,5 cm (16,2 x 12,7 in). PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Rheinland-Pfalz. LITERATUR: Heinrich Kley, Sammel-Album: Alte und neue Zeichnungen, hrsg. von Albert Langen, München 1923, Abb. S. 17. Galerie Commeter, Hamburg, Freiwillige Versteigerung: Kupferstiche, Farbstiche, Holzschnitte, Radierungen, Lithographien, Aquarelle, Handzeichnungen alter u. moderner Meister, Katalog 66, Auktion 16.05.1935, Los-Nr. 239. Links unten signiert. Auf Bütten. Mit schwarzem Tuschrand eingefasst. 11,8 x 16,9 cm (4,6 x 6,6 in), blattgroß. PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Baden-Württemberg (seit mind. zwei Generationen in Familienbesitz). Thomas Rowlandson (London 1756-1827)The Post House pen, brown ink and watercolour on paper18.1 x 26.5cm (7 1/8 x 10 7/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceSale, Christie's, London, 17 November 1987, lot 137, where purchased by the present ownerThis drawing probably dates from the 1790s; it was in this decade and the preceding one that Rowlandson produced his most remarkable work, the confidence of his pen lines showing what an assured and skilful draughtsman he was. In this instance his eye for social commentary falls on a scene outside a Post House where the innkeeper is cajoling a horse of dubious quality in the direction of a gentleman in need of transport. To the amusement of the bystanders the animal and the gentleman appear to be sizing each other up with equal disquiet. While the man in the tricorn points at the uncertain, bony legs of the nag, his own stance is almost a mirror image of it. Their shared shortcomings are emphasised even further by the upright stance of the young soldier standing on the right. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

IV, London, 1860, plate 21 The present plate is based on Turner's watercolour The Pass at Faido, St Gotthard, now in the collection of the Morgan Library and Museum. Ruskin himself travelled to Faido in 1845 to make his own sketches and was surprised to discover that "the mountains, compared with Turner's colossal conception, look pigmy & poor." (see Letter dated 15th August 1845, Ruskin in Italy: Letters to his Parents, 1845, H.I.Shapiro ed., Oxford University Press, 1972, p. 172). This plate and its companion, The Pass of Faido (1st Simple Topography) which was more closely based instead on Ruskin's own on-the-spot drawing of the scene, were both etched for Ruskin's Modern Painters to demonstrate the difference between a topographical and an imaginative vision of a landscape.Condition report: Small foxing spots mostly in the margin, one to the image in the upper right quadrant above the mountains. Ɵ Large cutting from a bifolium of a commentary on Matthew, drawing material from lost parts of Frigulus' commentary on the same, in a mixed Carolingian-Insular minuscule, in Latin, manuscript on parchment[northern France, mid-ninth century] Cutting from the bottom half of a bifolium (trimmed at upper and both vertical edges), each leaf with parts of a single column of 25 lines of a rounded Carolingian minuscule with Insular letterforms and abbreviations (see below), discussing Matthew 4:18-5:37, capitals larger in same ink, one natural flaw in parchment, a few wormholes and stains to reverse from leather from reuse in a later binding, overall in good condition on fine and supple parchment, total size: 150 by 330mm.; in cloth-covered card binding An important fragment containing a witness to the lost sections of the eighth-century theologian Frigulus; here in a hand blending elements of Insular script with Carolingian minuscule  Provenance:1. Copied in a French scriptorium in the mid-ninth century, either by a scribe who came from Ireland or England, or in a Continental house founded by missionaries from that region. The early medieval missionaries responsible for these foundations focussed their attention on Germany, and any such centres in France were few and now obscure.2. Philip Bliss (1787-1857), registrar of the University of Oxford and principal of St. Mary Hall, Oxford; this leaf from an album of leaves and fragments assembled by him from Oxford bindings and elsewhere. The album sold at Sotheby's, 21 August 1858, lot 119.3. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), the single greatest manuscript collector to have ever lived; the Bliss album his MS. 15,659, and passing to his heirs after his death, and thence to the Robinson brothers of 16-17 Pall Mall, sold in Sotheby's, 24 April 1911, lot 390, to "Quaritch" (in fact E.H. Dring).4. E.H. Dring (1863-1928), the first managing director of Quaritch, passing in turn to his son E.M. Dring (1906-1990), himself manager of Quaritch from 1960.5. Quaritch of London, acquired alongside the vast Dring fragment and charter collection in 1983; this then Quaritch, cat. 1036, Bookhands of the Middle Ages (1984), no. 78. 6. Bruce Ferrini (1950-2010), manuscript-dealer of Akron, Ohio; his cat. 2 (1989), no. 2. The second bifolia of the Quaritch catalogue sold by Ferrini to The International Christian University, Tokyo.7. Schøyen Collection of London and Oslo, their MS. 110. Text:The text here, as well as that of the sister-leaves now in Tokyo, was edited by Löfstedt in 1997, and that publication allowed Forte in 2004 to detect the close connections between Frigulus' commentary on Matthew and the text here. Frigulus' commentary survives in part only as quotations in later authors' works, and a single ninth-century Italian manuscript in Quedlinberg Gymnasium, Qu. Cod. 127 (Die Handschriften der ehemaligen Stifts-und Gymnasialbibliothek Quedlinburg in Halle, 1982, pp. 218-220; the text of that edited by Forte in Corpus Christianorum, 2018). Forte concluded that the present leaves and those in Tokyo are the last surviving part of a set of recensiones of Frigulus' commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, and fill sections of the text that are missing from the Quedlinberg manuscript (about a third of its original leaves are wanting). Thus, these are the last remaining record of this lost text.Little is known of Frigulus. In the early ninth century, Smaragdus of St-Mihiel listed him as one of his sources in his Liber Comitis (see lot 4), and from that it has been surmised that he most probably lived and wrote in the late eighth century, most probably during the first flush of the Carolingian renaissance. Bischoff thought him Irish due to the links between his work and Insular texts ('Wendepunkte in der Geschichte der lateinischen Exegese im Frühmittelalter', Sacris Erudiri, 6, 1954, pp. 189-279), but recently this has been questioned due to lack of concrete evidence (M.M. Gorman, 'Frigulus: Hiberno-Latin author or Pseudo-Irish phantom?', Revue d'Histoire Ecclésiastique, 100 (2005), pp. 425-456). Script:The hand here is a rare early form of Carolingian minuscule, retaining traces of Insular influence. Despite conforming to Carolingian script norms, the scribe occasionally lapses into Insular forms (note some of his open 'a's, and the form of his 'g' particularly in his ligatures) as well as using characteristically Insular abbreviations for "est", "con" and "enim". Bischoff studied the Continental houses producing Insular script, noting that the majority were German scriptoria and only a tiny handful were in France (B. Bischoff, Mittelalterliche Studien, III, 1981, pp. 5-38). This impression has been confirmed by a recent project based at the University of Leicester, which surveyed surviving examples of Insular script. However, such practices outside of the larger centres of Germany do not appear to have survived the script reforms of the early Carolingian era, and by the early ninth century Insular script appears to have been kept on only in the scriptoria of Lorsch, Echternach and St Gall, and "[f]rom 820 on, Fulda is the only stronghold of Anglo-Saxon script in Germany" (B. Bischoff, Latin Palaeography, 1990, p. 94). French examples are of the utmost rarity (but note a fragment of Bede's Homilies in our last Schøyen sale, 8 July 2020, lot 18). The presence of these paleographical influences might suggest that our scribe came from Ireland or England, or at least his house had been founded by missionaries from that region. It may not be a coincidence that this text was available to scribes working within an Insular environment and with probable ties to Ireland and England, and these leaves may yet have thir part to play in the debates about Frigulus' origin. Published:B. * JOHN NICHOLSON (SCOTTISH 1921 - 2004),M.V. "SEA PRINCESS"oil on canvas, signed and titledimage size 45cm x 60cm, overall size 54cm x 69cm Framed.Note: John Nicholson was only five when his love affair with ships began. John was fascinated by the workings of a paddle steamer on a day trip to the Isle of Man in 1925 and he was still enjoying sailing on the paddle steamer PS Waverley 78 years later. Drawing was also an interest from a very young age and family holidays on the Clyde in the 1930s provided the subject matter for many of his early paintings. John served in WWII and spent four years as a POW. In the early 1950s he began receiving commissions. Pen and ink drawings appeared in several shipping magazines and from 1984 until 1987, John was commissioned to paint all new vessels to the Cal/Mac fleet. His attention to detail in all his pictures often led to extended correspondence with those wanting a painting of a ship in a particular livery or location. His regular trips to the Isle of Man resulted in a commission from Captain Jack Ronan to paint three Steam Packet ships for him. In 1993 he was commissioned to do a set of paintings of The Isle of Man Steam Packet ships for postage stamps issued by the Isle of Man Post Office. John was a renowned marine artist and his works will remain as a permanent memorial to his abiding interest in all things to do with the sea and, for more than 25 years, he provided the PS Waverley with artwork for their postcards, posters, timetables and advertisements - and all completely free of charge. Early in 1990, the publishers Hart, Maclagan & Will were printing their first book in The Memories of the Clyde series, The Duchess of Fife. They were searching for a suitable front-cover illustration and contact was made with John Nicholson. In 1992 the second title, Steamers of the Clyde, featured all 24 illustrations painted by John Nicholson. In 1994, Liners of the Clyde was published. This book contained illustrations of 24 liners all painted by John with his own authoritative descriptions. He followed this with another work on the steamers of the Clyde and Western Isles with the words provided by himself, Robin Boyd and Iain Quinn. We have only offered two examples of John Nicholson's work in recent years. Both were smaller watercolours (rather than oil paintings) and prices achieved were £200 & £420
