*De Morgan (William, 1839-1917). Study of a dragon, pencil highlighted with bodycolour on grey paper, showing a tethered dragon, pencil grid to aid enlargement, signed in ink lower right, lightly damp-stained to lower right (touching image), biro annotations on verso, sheet size 15 x 31cm (6 x 12ins) Drawing made for the front panel in a Morris & Co. ebonised oak cabinet which belonged to Mrs. Stirling, and is now in the collection of the De Morgan Foundation. Although the oil painting on the cabinet is attributed to William De Morgan, there is a design for the panel in the hand of his wife, Evelyn. The presence of this dragon drawing suggests that there are certainly grounds for the attribution, and probably the design was the result of a collaboration by the two artists. The hand-written note on the verso of this drawing states: "Sketch made by William De Morgan for panel in the Morris & Co built china cabinet at Old Battersea House showing the Dragon in the painting done by De Morgan. This drawing (and painting) must NOT be confused with St. George and the Dragon. It is of course St. Martha's Dragon. In this picture St. Martha has tethered the Dragon with a silken rope and is taking it back to TARRASCON in Provence, France to show the townspeople who were terrorized by it." However, the De Morgan Foundation states that the image is indeed of St. George's dragon, a theory which seems to be borne out by the knight that kneels in front of the people (in this tale the citizens of Silene) and the sword lodged in the side of the beast (St. Martha tamed her dragon, without recourse to violence and injury). Known first and foremost as the principal potter of the Arts & Crafts Movement, William De Morgan's imagery has a number of recurring themes, and one which he returned to again and again was the dragon, depicting this and other fantastical beasts in tiles, vases, chargers and dishes. Alfred Wainwright, original pen and ink drawing, "Askival". 17 cm x 15 cm, framed, signed (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The image is a little discoloured. It is universally the same colour which is a sort of beige tone. Other than this the picture is in good condition with no other issues.

Lot 845

Alfred Wainwright, original pen and ink drawing, "The Great Frost of 1895, Kendal", signed. 15 cm x 20 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The drawing is in generally good condition. There is no evidence of any damage to the paper. There is some discolouration around the edges and the odd brown spot. The paper is also slightly wrinkled and in our opinion requires remounting. Over the years we have sold in the region of 100 or so Wainwright drawings. He did use Tippex on his drawings for corrective purposes. There is some Tippex to the wall on the top of the bridge, and also to the edge of a gull wing. At the right hand side of the picture it looks as if he has Tippexed out a complete figure.

See Swinton, Dr William Elgin, Monsters of Primeval Days, London, 1931; see also, same author, The Dinosaurs - A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles, London, 1934 wherein many of the drawings, models and dioramas created by Edwards are published, described and illustrated (the author at the Natural History Museum, London, 1924-1961 later Director of Life Sciences, Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, died 1994").Vernon Edwards is credited as being one of the most talented and influential dinosaur model makers of the 20th century. His work has appeared in museums and galleries around the world; it was a major influence on movie producers and early special effects creators, particularly when films such as The Lost World and King Kong began to showcase dinosaurs as part of the increasingly popular ‘monster movies’ of the 1920's and 30's. Edwards was born in 1891 into a naval family and attended Weymouth College. In 1914 he joined the navy and served throughout World War One; after the war he found it difficult to adjust to civilian life and, among other professions, tried his hand at farming. His greatest passion was model making, being self taught in art and anatomy, and it was whilst staying with family in Sussex in the early 1920's that he met Dr F.A. Bather, Keeper of Geology at the British Museum. Dr. Bather was impressed by the detailed and accurate models that Edwards was producing and asked him to produce a series of prehistoric models for the British Museum (Natural History), now known as the Natural History Museum. Vernon Edwards was given access to the museum's collections and scientific monographs, so the models he produced were up to date reconstructions which were then authenticated by Dr. Bather and later by Dr. W.E. Swinton for scientific accuracy. His major work for the Museum was a series of dioramas which graced the 'Fossil Fish' gallery until the late 1970's.The models proved to be very popular and many museums around the world would order them to highlight their growing and increasingly popular collections of paleontological specimens; the largest collections in the UK can now be found in Bolton Museum and the Horniman Museum, London. At this time Edward’s work would also go on to be used for cigarette cards, as well as appearing in many popular magazines, such as The Illustrated London News and The Listener, but it was the publication of The Dinosaurs: A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles, by W.E. Swinton, the first serious dinosaur book ever produced, that would place his work at the forefront of academic and popular imagination.Commercial production of the models was time-consuming, which made the models expensive, so very few were produced other than for museums. Being of plaster they were also fragile, so very few outside well-conserved museum collections survive undamaged. The items in this collection are a selection of original sketches and paintings by Vernon Edwards, master models from which moulds were taken, and stock models produced for sale by Gregory Bottley & Co.M.E.
