The Grand Master, or, Adventures of Qui Hi? in Hindostan. Hudibrastic Poem in Eight Cantos by Quiz. Illustrated with engravings by Rowlandson. London. Printed by Thomas Tegg, No. M, Cheapside. 1816. A first edition in a fine binding by Riviere, 3/4 bound in red crimson, with five raised bands, a gilt title and six compartments with gilt devices and gilt-ruled borders, marbled endpapers, a wonderful colored fold-out frontis by Thomas Rowlandson, the colored title page followed by a six-page Preface, then an Invocation to Butler, 252 pages of text, a thirteen-line errata slip at the end, and the top edge is gilt. There are twenty-eight hand-colored aquatints altogether, including the colored frontis, the title page, and a sepia-colored plate. All the errata are uncorrected, as called for, and it lacks the C8 cancel, as usual. Some pages are mispaginated. Page 31 is numbered as page 33, and pages 73 and 74 are repeated - they read 72, 73, 74, then 72, 74, and 75, but the text on those pages is not repeated - and those details are points of issue which make this a first edition. The color plates were done by Thomas Rowlandson and the text was written by William Combe, but the book is largely remembered for the color plates by Rowlandson. Rowlandson (1756-1827) was an English artist and caricaturist known for his political satire and social observations. He produced some ten thousand engravings, etchings, ink and watercolor illustrations, and his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. He also produced highly explicit erotica for a private clientele; these were never published publicly at the time and now are only found in a small number of collections. Quiz was likely the pseudonym for William Combe (1742 - 1823), also spelled Coombe, a British miscellaneous writer. His early life was that of an adventurer, his later life was passed chiefly within the "rules" of the King's Bench Prison, which means he spent a lot of time in prison for debt. He is chiefly remembered as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem also illustrated by Rowlandson. The Grand Master was a stinging satire of British imperial rule in India, and the barbs in Rowlandson’s hand-colored plates were directed at Lord Moira, who was the Marquess of Hastings and served as Governor-General of India from 1813 to 1823. The plates also poked fun at the East India Company for its Hindu prejudices and it satirized the church for its patent disregard of Hindu culture and practices. “Qui hi”, or “Kooee hye", is the Bengali phrase meaning “Who’s there”. No bells were used in the houses of the gentry in India, so servants sat at the doors of the dining or drawing room, and when they were called or summoned by the phrase Qui hi, the servants magically appeared. The book is 8vo. and measures 9 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. wide, with occasional light browning or spots, and this first edition with the highly colorful Rowlandson plates is a great addition to anyone who collects English art from the Georgian era.

GIACOMO CAVEDONI (Sassuolo, Modena, 1577-Bologna, 1660), attributed."Angel and saint".Ink, pencil, brown wash and charcoal on octagonal paper.Size: 25 x 27 cm (drawing); 28.5 x 31 cm (paper); 51.5 x 54 cm (frame).Drawing attributed to Giacomo Cavedoni, an Italian painter of the Bolognese school, led by Annibale and Agostino Carracci. The anatomical robustness of the saint and the foreshortened angel show affinities with the classicist canons of this current of the Baroque period. A certain Michelangeloesque influence, although filtered through the Carracci models, is also evident in the sculptural value of the bodies.Giacomo Cavedoni was educated in Bologna in the workshop of Bartolomeo Passerotti and Bernardino Baldi and subsequently became a pupil of the Carracci at their Accademia degli ¬Incamminati. His work in Bologna did not prevent him from going to Venice, where he acquired a permanent imprint of the colourism developed in that city. In 1610 he travelled to Rome where he assisted Guido Reni on the frescoes in the Palazzo del Quirinale, assimilating this experience to the Neo-Venetianism which, together with the forms of Bolognese classicism, would be the most characteristic features of his painting. This is evident in his happiest works after his return to Bologna following his stay in Rome. Cavedone belonged to a fertile generation of Bolognese artists trained under the Carracci family: Mastelletta, Alessandro Tiarini, Lucio Massari, Leonello Spada and Lorenzo Garbieri were among the artists who brought the Bolognese School to splendour. Among his pupils were Giovanni Andrea Sirani, Giovanni Battista Cavagna (or Cavazza), Ottavio Corrado and Flaminio Torri.

Lot 632

A rare oversize silver telescopic propelling pencilSampson Mordan & Co, French import mark double-struck for pre 1893, incuse stamped S. MORDAN & CO Tapering cylindrical in form, a monumental telescopic propelling pencil, when pulling open from shut, the decreasing tapering sections appear one by one, enabling the oversize writing lead to emerge, the whole concertinas up into a cylindrical case, a large suspension ring attached, length open 76cm, weight 13oz.Footnotes:Sampson Mordan (1790–1843) was a British silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented propelling pencil. His partner at the time was John Isaac Hawkins and they filed a patent for their invention in 1822. Mordan quickly bought out Hawkins and in 1823 registered his first silver mark. By October of 1823 he had formed another partnership, this time with a wealthy stationer by the name of Gabriel Riddle. Under the name of 'S. Mordan and Co' they carried on business as Mechanists and Manufacturers of Patent and other articles, at 22 Castle Street, Finsbury, London.Although 'S. Mordan & Co' had begun primarily manufacturing propelling pencils, the company also produced other products of excellent design and quality. By 1842 they were advertising a multitude of products, including: patent pencil cases in various designs, novelty pencils in shapes of pistols and flutes etc, pencil leads, cedar drawing pencils, self-adjusting pen holders, patent oblique pens, portable quill pens, letter copying presses, locks, book edge locks, cash and deed boxes, fireproof merchant chests, medicine chests, smelling bottles, fountain ink stands, travelling ink wells and seal presses for stamping paper. Sampson Mordan (Senior) died on 9th April 1843 and the company was passed into the hands of two of his sons, Sampson Mordan Junior and Augustus Mordan. At this time the company were listed as having premises at 41 City-Road, Finsbury, in the County of Middlesex and also at 72 Cheapside in the City of London. The company continued to flourish, and the two brothers were joined in partnership by Edmund George Johnson and Zachariah Watkins. In the 1870s Sampson Mordan Junior retired to live in France, eventually dying in Paris in 1881. It has been mooted that this unusual monumental silver propelling pencil was especially commissioned and given to Sampson Mordan Junior on his retirement, as a gift from the company. This would explain the French import marks and the fact that it appears to be the only one of its type and size. However, this is just hearsay. The other theory is it could possibly have been used as a display model for a shop in France, which would also explain its size and the import marks. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
