Italian School, 19th century, An album containing 14 views in Sicily and Southern Italy, pen and ink on tracing paper, all inscribed in Italian, with one pencil study of figures in a boat, the largest sheet 23 x 69 cm (9 x 27 in) the album 30 x 43 cm (12 x 17 in). Note: although the inscriptions suggest an Italian hand, a view by the same hand of the Foro Romano was on the market in 2004 and again in 2007 as the work of Augustus J. C. Hare. That drawing had apparently descended in Hare`s family. The present album contains a loose sheet headed `Adolphus A. Hamm...` listing the views in English, so the drawings may be the work of someone employed by Hare to prepare views for one of his guide books.

This is a more highly finished version of a partially coloured drawing in the RIBA Drawings collection which is signed by Bonomi and has detailed measurements for the weavers in ink. In 1762 Robert Adam began work on a house on the south side of Berkeley Square for the 3rd Earl of Bute. Three years later Bute sold the unfinished shell to William Petty, Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquis Lansdowne. Adam continued to work on the house (his plans and services were included in the purchase price) which was largely complete by 1768. Bonomi`s unexecuted design for fitting up the gallery as a library was the fifth to be commissioned by Lansdowne who had already rejected proposals for the gallery from Adam himself (c.1764, drawing in Sir John Soane`s Museum), Pannini (1772), Clerisseau (1774) and Belanger (1779). George Dance`s designs of 1788-91 were eventually realised as a sculpture gallery in 1816-19 by Robert Smirke..
Alice (Princess) Seydlitz bei Rossbach roundel depicting the heroic leadership of the Prussian cavalry officer, Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz, at the battle of Rossbach, during the Seven Years` War, in 1757, pen and ink on silk, 225mm. diameter, signed, dated and inscribed, Alice, Aug: 6/56 Osborne, lower right, mounted on board support, framed and glazed in circular oak frame. ***Princess Alice (1843-1878) was the 2nd daughter and 3rd child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Although born in the family apartment at Buckingham Palace, it was the event that prompted Albert to seek a larger family home, leading to the acquisition of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The continuing Germanic identity of the British royal family through this period is well known (Princess Alice counted Ernest Augustus I of Hanover, Feodora, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, and Ernest II, Prince of Saxe Coburg and Gotha amongst her godparents), so this competently executed drawing was most probably copied from some pictorial reference, doubtless readily available to the young thirteen year old, to mark the centenary of the beginning of the Seven Years` War (1756-63).
