A Victorian vellum treasure's account book, from the Witton Lane Primitive Methodist Chapel, with extensive ink MS. tabulations from 1862-1927, including payments for cleaning services, the organist's and further salaries, aid, drawing, painting, printing, concert proceeds, prizes, coal and gas, carpentry, etc., titled front board, tall 4to This accounts book could relate to two Primitive Methodist chapels in Victorian England: as the foundation stone for the chapel at Witton Park, County Durham, was not laid until 1883 it is more likely that the accounts inscribed herein relate to Witton-le-Wear in the same county. Though the Witton-le-Wear chapel itself was opened in 1901, there had been an organised Methodist presence in the village since 1822 unlike Witton Park.

Joseph Pennell (1857 - 1926), American School pen and ink - Fruitful Orchards, The Generalife (Alhambra) 1875, signed, titled and dated, in glazed gilt frame, 27cm x 43cm. N.B. In 1875 Joseph Pennell travelled to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, where made numerous drawings in pen and ink. These drawings were subsequently used as illustrations for Washington Irving's famous book 'The Alhambra' (1896 edition). This lot is sold with a 1906 edition of 'The Alhambra' (Provenance: Sir William Henry Preece K.C.B. Welsh engineer and inventor). The drawing is reproduced on pages 261 and 329. Provenance: The Jean and Graham Devoe Williford Charitable Trust, Fairfield, Texas. Graham Devoe Williford was an avid and important collector of 19th century American paintings including works by the American artist and illustrator Joseph Pennell

A small group of 12 mostly pencil drawings, 1917, some drawn during the third battle of Ypres in 1917, subjects include Ypres Cathedral, the shattered Hotel de Ville at Arras, the shattered belfry and a shell-torn street at Bailleul, the artist's billet, Cathedral of St Omer, plus a market scene in Alexandria and 2 sketches of Cairo, mostly inscribed and dated, various mostly small sheet sizes but including 1 mounted pen and ink and wash drawing of Ypres Cathedral, 34.5 x 24.5 cm Duncan served with the 9th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. The Lanchester Legacy by Chris Clark, volume one, published 1995, covering the marque and its history between 1895 and 1931, detailing the models and variants. 279pp with index. Also volume three in the same series entitled 'A Celebration of Genius', edited by John Fletcher, 284pp, 1996. (Volume two is still to be published). Also, Lanchester Cars 1895-1956, published 1990, a compilation of articles, road tests and photographs, A4 format, together with, Daimler & Lanchester by Brian Long, 329pp and index, 1st ed 1995, giving a very detailed overview of both marques, with quality photographs and appendices. Additionally, Lanchester Motor Cars by Bird and Hutton-Scott, 1965 1st ed, and comes with an ink drawing by George Lanchester with a note saying that it was drawn in 1950, possibly for a very young Malcolm Jeal, however, no DJ. All others with very good DJs, slight creasing to the tops of the spines, no splits. (5)

A pen-and-ink drawing showing a cyclist halting outside a thatched public house, where another bicycle is already parked against the post of the inn's sign. Signed in the bottom right corner next to the work's title. Some light toning, otherwise good condition. Framed and glazed, image size 20 x 27cm. (1)

*Frank Patterson (1871-1952): When We Were Kings of the Road. An elaborate vertical format pen-and-ink drawing for the magazine 'Cycling', the name of the magazine emblazoned across the top margin, with silhouettes of cyclists on either side. Signed and dated 1935 in the bottom margin. The work is sub-titled 'An' all t' way from Lunnun too!' and shows a group of country folk admiring an ordinary (high-wheel) bicycle which has been left propped against the signpost of the Bull Inn. Some foxing and in need of a clean, but an excellent example of the artist's work, with particularly well-drawn details. Framed and glazed, image size 42 x 30.5cm. (1)

*David Louis Ghilchik (1892-1972) - 'Running Repairs'. An original pen-and-ink drawing showing an attractive young couple attempting to carry out repairs to their motorcycle whilst driving along a village street, the beautiful pillion-passenger passing a spanner to her beau as he carries out work on the front wheel-hub, with poultry scattering and an elderly couple looking on in horror. The title appears in the bottom margin. Signed bottom right. A drawing for Punch, June 26, 1929 (page 704). Good condition. Mounted, framed and glazed. Sheet size 26 x 33.5cm. (1)

*David Louis Ghilchik (1892-1972) - 'The Cause of it all'. An original pen-and-ink drawing showing an irate driver clambering out of a ditch, his car having been forced off the road by a bewhiskered man pushing a loaded wheelbarrow. The title appears in the bottom left corner, followed by the culprit's protest: "All roight, all roight, dont ee' nag so. Oi've apologised, 'aven't Oi?". Signed bottom right. Good condition. Mounted, framed and glazed. Sheet size 25 x 37cm. (1)

Lot 84

*S.C.H. 'Sammy' Davis (1887-1981). An original pen and ink cartoon drawing, entitled 'A Nightmare', which was illustrated on page 208 of the issue of Motor Cycling published on 3rd January, 1910. Sammy Davis achieved fame as a racing motorist, journalist and clubman, but was also well-known for his witty, sometimes outlandish and surreal, artwork. This example shows a motor-cyclist teetering along a precipitous mountain ridge whilst being threatened and assailed by various grotesque figures. Signed by the artist in the bottom right-hand corner, mounted, framed and glazed and in good condition. Image size 20 x 26cm. (1)

A framed and glazed pen-and-ink and coloured drawing on card, dated 1920, signed by the artist in the bottom left-hand corner, showing an open landscape across which a driver has driven his veteran car at speed and has managed to collide with the trunk of the only available tree. Image size 25 x 16.5cm. Together with another mounted, framed and glazed pencil and pen-and-ink drawing of similar vintage, entitled 'Going Strong' in the bottom margin, indistinctly initialled in the bottom left corner, and again showing a chauffeur-driven vehicle, this time racing along a country road while its two passengers cling on in the back seat and an onlooking policeman peers from behind a roadside tree in horror. A UNIQUE ALBUM OF CONTEMPORARY WATERCOLOURS OF THE FRIGATE H.M.S. JASON BY THE SHIP'S CARPENTER, AND BOUND IN MONKEY SKIN, CIRCA 1805, compiled by Thomas Harris and comprising ships drawings, manuscript on paper, 7 watercolour drawings of ships' details, the second one with a Union Jack and an early 19th century pen and ink drawing of a figure, and 5pp describing ordnance Dementions of 1st Rate 110 Guns 2764 Tons, etc. Bound exotically in monkey skin, a little worn, contained in a recessed space in a modern green morocco chemise, c.1805. With an inscription on the inside cover of the book: This book was written and drawn by Thomas Harris cabinet maker, of Shrewsbury. He was formally ship carpenter to the Jason frigate and made a model of it which I bought. He gave me this book at that time about June 1836. The binding is made of the skin of a monkey be brought from Jamaica -- 4½ x 3¾in. (11.5 x 9.5cm.), The Jason was a 32-gun fifth rate Thames Class frigate, launched Woolwich 1804, she became flagship to Admiral Alexandre Cochrane in June 1805 and, serving in the Leeward Islands, enjoyed a lively career. Capturing several French and Spanish vessels (including the Naiade after a nine hour chase), she was handed over to Capt. Thomas John Cochrane (the Admiral's son) and continued much as before. Frigate actions, reducing batteries, and surviving an attempted mutiny whilst in New York, her last acts were to serve as escorts to the restored French King, Louis XVIII, and the Prussian and Russian Emperors during the peace negotiations that heralded the end of the Wars in 1815. Worn out, she was broken up shortly afterwards.

(35.5 x 24.5cm); together with Pierre-Alexandre FORFAIT: Traité élémentaire de la mâture des vaisseaux, à l'usage des élèves de la marine, published by Clousier, Paris, 1788 (1st Edition), tables, technical vocabulary, 294 pages, plus 22 folding engraved plates, contemporary French mottled calf, gilt decorated spine in compartments including a red Morocco title piece -- 10½ x 8½in. (26.5 x 21.5cm.), -2, The printed version included with this lot comprises 24 folding engraved plates, these drawings are about double the size of the engraved versions, and contain period corrections. Pierre Ozanne (1737-1813) together with his brother Nicholas, was one of the most significant naval draughtsmen of mid-late 18th Century France and amongst other services, was Professor of Drawing at the Naval Academy; The Marine Engineer Pierre-Alexandre Forfait (1752 -1807), was the author of many works, some of which have been published. The Traité de la mature.. was ordered by the Ministry De Castries, for the education of Naval Cadets. The success of the book made Forfait a member of the Académie des Sciences.

A pen & ink drawing commemorating the victory of Manna and Steve Donoghue in the 1925 Derby,indistinctly signed with initials, 20.5 by 25.5cm., framed; sold with a photograph of Manna & Donoghue winning the Derby with signature of the jockey reproduced in the plate, framed, 51 by 55cm. (2)Following his 2,000 Guineas win, Mann won the Derby by a then record distance of eight lengths. The colt was bred in Ireland, owned by Mr Henry E. Morriss, trained at Beckhampton by Fred Darling and ridden by Steve Donoghue. Manna was retired after breaking down in his Triple Crown bid in the St Leger. At stud he produced the 2,000 Guineas winner Colombo.
