Augustus John O.M. R.A. 1878-1961 study for 'brazen serpent' pen and ink 15x18cm.; 6x7in. (2) This drawing is one of many studies the artist made for the painting Moses and the Brazen Serpent which won the Slade Summer Composition Prize in 1898. Sillince (William Augustus, 1906-74). Ten original pen and ink humourous illustrations for "Pray Silence, Hints for Speakers", by Commander A.B. Campbell, Epworth Press, 1964, each illustration captioned in pencil and overall approx. 275mm x 180mm, together with the original pen and ink drawing with transparent red overlay used for the cover design, plus Sillince's copy of the printed book and a letter from the publisher returning the original artwork to the artist A complete suite of all the illustrations used in the published volume. *Farmiloe (Edith, fl. 1895-1907). 'The Christmas Tree', pen, ink & watercolour, signed, approx. 160 x 245 mm (6.25 x 9.75 ins), framed and glazed, together with another similar pen, ink and watercolour by the same artist, depicting four young children in a drawing room, signed, approx. 160 x 245 mm (6.25 x 9.5 ins), framed and glazed Edith Farmiloe was a children's book illustrator, whose work shows the influence of Caldecott and Greenaway. Illustrated works include All The World Over (1898) and Rag, Tag & Bobtail (1899). See The Studio, vol. 18, 1895, pp. 172-179, and Houfe, Dictionary of British Book Illustrators, p. 298. (2)
*Flaxman (John, 1755-1826, attrib.). Two pencil sketches mounted on a single sheet, comprising a study of a tomb with reclining naiad, inscribed in pencil 'Mrs: Elizth: Norris, 1779, Finchley', and an outline profile drawing of a man's head, approx. 95 x 130 mm (3.75 x 5 ins) and 130 x 90 mm (5 x 3.5 ins), respectively With an additional inscription in ink to the album leaf on which these two drawings are tipped-in 'From John Flaxman's sketch book when a boy. The writing of later date - the book sold to America 1920'. The study of a tomb sculpture is based on the tomb still extant in St. Mary's Finchley graveyard, made for Elizabeth Norris, who died in 1779. (1)
*Gilbert (Sir John, R. A., P.R.W.S., 1817-97). A pair of early sketchbooks belonging to Sir John Gilbert, containing numerous sketches, illustrations, and studies, in watercolour, pen & ink and pencil, including humorous subjects, costume studies, illustrations to Shakespeare, Sir Walter Scott, Gil Blas, Smollett, Dr. Syntax, etc., historical battle scenes, including Napoleon, some landscape sketches (Blackheath, Rome, Bologna, Southampton, Greenwich College), portraits of historical and contemporary literary figures, including Coleridge, Scott, Goethe, as well as family members and aquaintances, some sketches of paintings by Sir John Gilbert, with notes on their sales, principally 1832-34, with some additions from the 1840s and later, comprising two albums of 128 leaves and 145 leaves, approx. 315 x 265 mm (12.5 x 10.5 ins), some marks and minor marginal soiling (generally in good condition), one volume with contents somewhat loose and binding broken, the other volume with upper cover missing and lower cover detached, large 4to An important pair of early sketch books by the famous Victorian artist and illustrator Sir John Gilbert. At least one drawing is signed by him, and many are captioned and dated. Loosely inserted in one of the albums are two autograph letters to Sir John Gilbert from Herbert Jekyll of the Fine Art Committee for the Royal Commission Melbourne Exhibition of 1888, dated 20th & 25th April 1888, concerning the inclusion of work by Sir John Gilbert in the exhibition. 'Tunnellers All', crayon & black ink drawing, heightened with bodycolour, signed, approx. 255 x 203 mm (10 x 8 ins), title inscribed in pencil capitals to verso, with some additional printers marks in pencil Possibly one of the original illustrations for Nevinson's Modern War Paintings, published by Grant Richards in 1917. A mid-19th century drawing book, comprising thirteen full-page pencil drawings and twenty-four well-executed pen-and-ink drawings of views, dated between 1857 and 1865, eight of the pencil drawings being views in Germany, all of the others comprising views in India, Tibet, and the Himalayas, some with figures, the pen-and-ink drawings all neatly captioned in English, some other pages with preliminary, unfinished sketches, bound in contemp. blue-green boards, unlettered, soiled and rubbed, oblong royal 8vo (185 x 270 mm) A good series of detailed topographical views, many of Himalayan scenery, by an amateur artist. Unsigned, and with no discernable mark of provenance. Includes views of Goruckpoor, Gya, Suspool, Benares, Delhi, Sissoo, Lahoul, and Ladakh. (1)

Mutiny on the Bounty. A signed copy of Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhof and James Norman Hall, reprint, Boston, 1934, front endpapers neatly ruled and lined in double columns with the names of the cast in block capitals in the left column and the actors autograph signatures adjacent in the right-hand columns, including Charles Laughton, Clark Gable, Franchot Tone and Herbert Mundin, a total of thirty-seven names and signatures, the following two leaves (front free endpaper verso and half title recto) with good pen and ink drawings of a skull and anchor plus the Bounty at sea, pen, ink and pencil border decoration to title, with some pencil partially erased, rear free endpaper verso and pastedown with eleven further signatures of the crew and a good pen and ink drawing of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lion logo, autographs include those of the director Frank Lloyd, producer Irvine [sic] Thalberg and cinematographer Arthur Edeson, a further eleven signatures in total, orig. cloth lettered and decorated in silver, sl. rubbed and marked, and partly faded on the spine, 8vo An extraordinary and unique piece of film memorabilia relating to the first version of 'Mutiny on The Bounty'. The illustration at the rear of the book is signed 'Harry Ravin, Pasadena'. The book was given to the owner's mother by David Thursby who played the (uncredited) part of Thomas McIntosh in the film and whose name and signature appears on the front pastedown. (1)
