*Elizabeth II (Queen & Prince Charles). Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles with members of the Privy Council after a meeting at Buckingham Palace, London, 27 March 1981, colour photograph, 22.5 x 29.5 cm, signed on the original mount beneath by 'Elizabeth R' and dated by her 1981, and beneath 'Charles', framed and glazed, inscribed in ballpoint pen to back of frame, 'This is the special Privy Council when the Queen announced the engagement of Prince Charles, George Thomas' The engagement of Prince Charles and Diana was announced on 24 February 1981, and the date of the royal wedding (29 July) was announced on 3 March. This historic photograph, contrary to the inscription on the back of the frame, therefore commemorates the occasion upon which, according to the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, the Queen 'signified under the great seal and declared in council', gave her consent for the marriage to be set out in the licence and the register of the marriage, and entered in the books of the Privy Council. Seated in the front row and to left and right of Prince Charles and the Queen are Harold Macmillan, Margaret Thatcher, Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie, Christopher Soames, Quintin Hogg, George Thomas, and the Prime Minister of Mauritius. Among the twenty standing members of the Privy Council in the back row are Harold Wilson, Michael Foot, William Whitelaw and David Steel. George Thomas, First Viscount Tonypandy (1909-1997) was a British Labour Party politician and Speaker of the House of Commons (1976-1983). Thomas was closely attached to the Royal Family and presided over the investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle in 1969. Whether this double-signed photograph of the monarch and monarch-in-waiting is unique is not known, but no other copies of this photograph with its unusual pairing of autographs has been traced as having been sold.
