Lady's Mantle, circa 1991, watercolour and pencil drawing of a flowering lady's mantle plant, showing roots and a vignette of a bud lower right, drawn on thick white paper and inscribed [for Alan Bates] in black ballpoint pen to upper right blank area, '"Lady's Mantle... Lady's Mantle...! You've spoilt my Lady's Mantle!" - and MADE "my" (your) film - flourish! bloom-!' with love heart and Potter's signature beneath, 35.5 x 25cm (14 x 10ins), framed and glazed Provenance: From the family of Sir Alan Bates (1934-2003). Alan Bates may have been given this around the time he starred in Dennis Potter's film Secret Friends (1991), written and directed by Potter. It was based on his own novel Ticket to Ride (1986) and concerns a herbithologist who is unable to make love to his wife unless he imagines her as a prostitute. (1)

Pinter (Harold, 1930-2008). The Caretaker, A Play in Three Acts, 1st edition, Encore, [1960], signed presentation inscription from the author in red ballpoint pen to title-page, 'To Alan [Bates] from Harold, 28.5.60', original stapled wrappers, a few minor bumps and marks, lower wrapper slightly dust-soiled, slim 8vo, together with a share certificate giving Alan Bates one share in Caretaker Films Ltd., 30 November 1962, pre-printed form completed in manuscript and signed by the directors Birkett and Harold Pinter lower right, embossed stamp, fold creases, 24.5 x 25.5cm The Caretaker was Pinter's first significant commercial success. It premiered at the Arts Theatre Club in London's West End on 27 April 1960 and transferred to the Duchess Theatre the following month, where it ran for 444 performances before moving to Broadway. Alan Bates starred in the production as Mick, alongside Peter Woodthorpe and Donald Pleasence. (2)

I'm talking about Len in The Dwarfs', original pictorial wrappers, a little rubbed, 8vo Victoria Ward (1939-1992) was an English actress who was married to the actor Sir Alan Bates from 1970 until her premature death from a heart attack in 1992. Poem, circa 1971, a typed seven-line poem by Pinter titled 'Poem', signed presentation inscription in blue ballpoint pen from 'Harold' to Alan & Victoria [Bates] to upper and lower margins, one page on stiff paper, vertical creases, 4to 'Poem' appeared in a book titled Various Voices: Sixty Years of Prose, Poetry, Politics 1948-2008 (Faber, 1998). The wording here is as published except for the final word of the first line published as 'stared' and appearing here as 'looked'. (1)

* ALASDAIR GRAY (SCOTTISH b 1934 - ), 22.6.59, 1.15am, 144 WEST GRAHAM STREET ballpoint pen drawing, signed dated and inscribed 27cm x 32cm Framed and under glass. Label verso: Ewan Mundy Fine Art, inscribed: Carole Gibbons and Douglas Aberco(m)bie 144 West Graham Street. 22nd June 1959. (home of the painter Alan Fletcher who died in Milan in 1958). Note: Artists Carole Gibbons and Douglas Abercrombie studied at the Glasgow School of Art (1953 to 1957 and 1952 to 1956). Alasdair Gray also studied at the GSA from 1952 to 1957 and taught there from 1958 to 1962. Carole Gibbons and Alan Fletcher were close friends and her first exhibition (1958) was shared with Douglas Abercrombie and Alan Fletcher. Gray wrote of Alan Fletcher as: the only artist I know who naturally looked like the Bohemian artist of legend. He was the free-est soul I ever met, and impressed me so mightily that a diminished version of him has been a main character in all the novels I ever wrote. He had to be diminished, or he would have stolen attention from my main characters, who were versions of me.
