The Clash: An Autographed Promo Pressing Of The Single Complete Control/The City Of The Dead And Related Items, 1970s, comprising: the 1977 single, S CBS 5664, the picture sleeve signed on the back in black ballpoint by Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, Mick Jones and Topper Headon, with an accompanying letter from Paul Simonon to the vendor, in ballpoint on the back of a sheet of Ladbroke Dragonara Hotels stationery, reading, ...here's our new single, and I got the rest of the group to sign it - your card is enclosed + sign (sic) as well...Paul - The CLASH; together with an Unemployment Benefit Attendance Card, aka a Dole Card, (the card referred to in Paul's letter), the back signed in black ballpoint by all members of the band and additionally by Roadent, the roadie, Joe Strummer inscribing it You Lazy Barstard (sic) Footnotes: Provenance: The Clash was the vendor's favourite band at the time and he met them on a number of occasions, including the Glasgow Apollo concert with Richard Hell and The Voidoids on 25th October 1977. The vendor was backstage and talked to Paul Simonon for a while. Paul took the vendor's address and this led to him sending the promo single offered here. Earlier in the day the vendor had met The Voidoids' road manager and helped him obtain some drumskins from a local music shop; this resulted in the vendor being given a pass. However, plans changed and the Beatles went straight back to London. The vendor then received the signed card offered here. The Beatles played at the Savoy Ballroom, Southsea, Portsmouth on 7th April and it could well have been this concert referred to in the provenance: the next day they had a packed schedule back in London with a radio and TV appearance and concert. High Numbers/The Who: A Rare Railway Hotel 'Tuesday R & B Club' Membership Card, 1964, numbered 894 in blue ballpoint, expiry date stamped 5 Jan 1965, unused and near mint, 4in x 11in (10cm x 28cm) when folded out Footnotes: Provenance: From the collection of Richard Barnes, who was Pete Townshend's sixties art school flatmate. Barnes ran the Railway Hotel in 1964 where The Who had a residency. It was at this historic venue that Townshend first smashed his guitar and where managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp first met the band. Barnes was the Who's first official biographer with his best-selling book 'The Who: Maximum R&B', first released in 1983. The High Numbers played regularly at this venue in north west London, the club having been initiated by harmonica player Cyril Davies, a pioneer of British R & B. It was here that Christ Stamp and Kit Lambert first saw the band, and also here that Pete accidentally damaged his guitar on the low ceiling above the stage, prompting the band's destruction of their instruments.
