British Touring Diary. A manuscript diary, possibly kept by Francis John Hext, (clerk, of Tredethy, rector of Helland, 1779-1842), March/April & July/August 1830, in the company of the author's niece Anne Kendall, the brief first pages concerning the start of the trip from Lostwithiel to Tavistock, Exeter, Wells and Bath, the main part of the journal beginning on 7th July in Tenby, including excursions and ongoing tour to Pembroke, Narberth, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, St David's, Aberystwyth, Lancaster, the Lake District, Edinburgh, with descriptions of churches, castles, etc., some details of people met, geography, etc., a total of 167 pp. (including 3 pp. in pencil) written in a consistent but slightly difficult hand on unruled paper, contemporary sheep with gilt clasp, rubbed, oblong 8vo A ballpoint pen note to front free endpaper gives the name Samuel Hext [Major, 83rd Regiment, 1782-1822], but the handwriting is not the same. More likely, this would seem to be Samuel's older brother Francis John (or possibly younger brother William or George) travelling with his niece Anne, believed to be daughter of Francis's younger sister Anne, who married Charles Kendall.
