Sex Pistols: Test Pressings Of The Single Anarchy In The UK/I Wanna Be Me,1976,EMI 2566, two single-sided 7inch discs, white labels with handwritten recording details in black ballpoint, A-side label also with faint date 17th NOV in felt-tip pen, four-pronged centres, matrices EMI 2566 A-1/EMI 2566B-2, in plain white die-cut sleeve with matrix number, stamped 17 Nov 1976 and with John Peel's handwritten track timing and band nameFootnotes:'Well, I think you'll find this programme is in rather marked contrast to the programme that has preceded it, because tonight we are going to have a look at punk rock'- John Peel on the John Peel Show 'Punk Special', 10 December 1976The Sex Pistols' debut single, 'Anarchy In The UK' was played twice on the John Peel Show before it was reported to have been unceremoniously banned from UK radio. This was a reaction to the band's famously expletive-filled TV appearance on Today With Bill Grundy, but the criticism came too late to stop the record's seismic impact on British music and culture. The single was later featured on John Peel's ground-breaking 'Punk Special' broadcast. 'Anarchy In The UK' was an enduring favourite among John Peel's listenership, topping his 'Festive Fifty' playlist between 1978-1980, and again in 1981.The handwritten label for the B-side credits Chris Thomas as Producer rather than Dave Goodman, a credit error which carried over into the initial pressings of the single before being corrected. This test pressing was selected by Don Letts for his Record Box selection from the John Peel Archive:johnpeelarchive.com/sex-pistols/anarchy-in-the-ukFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

John Peel is reported to have described the furore as 'a great deal of fuss about nothing' and continued to play 'God Save The Queen' on his show, even including the track in his Festive Fifty playlist for 1977, at honorary number 61.A reissue of the Virgin single (limited to 4,000 copies) has recently been announced by the Sex Pistols to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022. 45 years may have passed since its release, but 'God Save The Queen' remains a forceful declaration on the state of the United Kingdom. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

I didn't at the time think that Joy Division were a band that I was going to prefer above any other...they were just one of a whole handful of bands whose work I was quite enjoying at that time. Walters then described Joy Division as ... the first real seminal post-punk band...they influenced so many people, to which Peel replied, Well, that's true and obviously the death of Ian Curtis sort of mythologised them to a degree...Peel championed the band throughout 1979 via the 'Peel Sessions' on his BBC Radio One show and regular airplay. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ahead of this, this promo record for radio play was produced and was released in the UK on 30th October to radio stations and DJs. It was a compilation of old songs, with just one new one included, Love In Vain, from the soon-to-be-released album Let It Bleed. As confirmed by the newsletter included in this lot, only 200 copies were pressed on the Decca label for the UK. In the US, copies were pressed on the London label but no precise figure of how many is available. The covers for both pressings were printed in the US, hence the mis-match in catalogue numbers between disc and cover, and there are differences in text between the US and UK covers. McBride, Will -- "Reinhard H. mit Socke, Casoli". 1973/printed 2014. Archival pigment print on Hahnemühle rag paper. 66 x 43,5 cm (81 x 59 cm). Signed, annotated and dated by the photographer in ballpoint pen on the verso.Color photographs by Will McBride are rare on the art market. In 1973 McBride took a series of male nudes in Casoli, Italy but never made prints from the slide negatives. At the request of an enthusiastic collector high quality pigment prints were made of a selection of the images in a small edition of 5 prints in 2014. The subtle colors and fine rendition of the skin's surface are extraordinary and show an undiscovered side of Will McBride's work. – A fine tonal print with strong colors and in excellent condition.Lit.: Will McBride.
