Thiago Barbalho Untitled 2022, 2022 Colour Pencil, Ballpoint Pen, Permanent Marker and Pencil on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Thiago Barbalho (1984) was born and raised in Natal, in the Northeast of Brazil. He lives and works in São Paulo. Thiago studied philosophy and law and holds a master's degree in philosophy. The artist started his career as a writer, having published short stories, novels and poetry, and founded Edições Vira-lata, an independent press that published several fanzines in collaboration with visual artists. After experiencing what he describes as 'a crisis in relation to the limitations of written language', the artist embraced pictorial language as his preferred means of expression. He is the author of the short stories collection Um Homem Bom [A Good Man] (Iluminuras, 2017), the poetry collection Doritos (Edições Vira-lata, 2013) and the novel Thiago Barbalho vai ao fundo do poço [Thiago Barbalho Reaches Rock Bottom] (Edith, 2012). He is one of the artists in the book 'Vitamin D3: Today's Best in Contemporary Drawing' (Phaidon Press, UK, 2021). Education MA in Philosophy at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte Select Exhibitions/Awards Some selected exhibitions: Solo shows: Correspondência (Galeria Marilia Razuk, São Paulo, 2019); Thiago Barbalho (Kupfer project space, London, 2018). Group shows: Voyage (Bergamin & Gomide, São Paulo, 2017); Rocambole (Pivô, São Paulo, 2018; Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon, 2019); Electric dreams (Nara Roesler, Rio de Janeiro, 2021). Works acquisition include Pinacoteca de Sao Paulo and some private colections. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork This work is part of my late practice developing elemental figures in a drawing technique that I call 'explosive writing'. Bringing gesture, colour, wonder and deep thoughts together, I come to symbols that ressembles both dawn, fingers and eyes as a portal to the experience of apparition. It brings to centre dense element mergered from my interest in subjects such as misticism, cartoon, writing poetry and the elements of metamorphosis found in nature. Artist: Francisco Toledo (Mexican, 1940-2019). Title: "Chango ["Art Kite" (papalote) without kite framework]". Medium: Original color stencil cut with watercolor. Date: Composed c2014. Dimensions: Overall size: 26 x 20 in. (660 x 508 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in ballpoint pen under the image; Taller Arte Papel label, verso. Edition unknown, presumed very small. Grey hand-made textured paper. The full sheet, deckle edges all four sides. Fine impression. Fine condition. Fabricated by Taller Arte Papel Vista Hermosa, San Augustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico, under Toledo's supervision. Please note that, unlike some other Art Kites in our auction, this example is “loose” and not affixed to a kite framework. Provenance: Private collection, Mexico City, Mexico. Comment(s): Toledo is arguably Mexico's most famous living painter/printmaker. Most of his kites are unsigned; only occasionally does Toledo sign them, and then generally on the verso. Each art kite is created from a stencil drawn and cut by Toledo in Arches paper. The stencil is then pressed into a hand made sheet of paper and hand-colored. When separated, the resulting contrast reveals the image. Some kites are hand-sprayed with dyes to create background effects before the stencil is applied. Image copyright © Francisco Toledo.
