A FRENCH RELIEF-CAST BRASS PETITE SONNERIE STRIKING CARRIAGE CLOCKBy Grohé, Paris, circa 1875The relief-cast case of Empire style, modelled with outstretched swan and foliage, with adorned dolphin ‘supports’, the white enamel dial with blued steel trefoil hands and an alarm subsidiary, the twin train movement signed GROHÉ PARIS to the backplate, with original platform lever escapement, striking the quarters on two bells, the base with strike selection lever, the front of the front plate stamped HJ18cm highCondition report:  This clock appears to have been recently restored and is in good condition.  The clock ticks when wound.  The petite sonnerie works on pushing the repeat.  The bells appear to have been broken and re silver soldered.  They are flat sounding.  The backplate is stamped 387 as is the underside of the base.The dial may have been restored?

A FRENCH ENGRAVED BRASS GORGE CASED GRAND SONNERIE STRIKING ALARM CARRIAGE CLOCKRetailed by J. Klaftenberger, 157 Regent Street, circa 1880The engraved gorge case decorated with foliage and ribbon-ties, gilt brass engraved mask with circular dial and subsidiary for the alarm, the twin train movement with original large silvered platform escapement, striking on two bells, with strike setting lever under the base18cm highCondition report:  The clock is in unrestored condition.  The gilding to the engraved case is worn and the metal is dirty.  All glass panels are in good condition with no chips.  The escapement is silvered and is the original.  The outer side of the backplate is stamped 533.  The underside of the base plate is stamped 533 as is one foot. The inner front plate 655.  The underside of the escapement is no 1026/3.  The movement functions with a wind but is sluggish.  It strikes and repeats but is out of sync.  The main dial is in perfect order.  The alarm dial has a hairline from centre to 9.One key PROVENANCE: Henry Cassels Kay (1827-1903), who worked in Alexandria, in the leading merchant company Briggs and Co.  He returned to England in 1875 and became Director of the Bank of Egypt. Having studied Arabic inscriptions in Cairo he turned his attentions to more academic pursuits.  His magnum opus was the translation and study of the 'History of Oman' by Najm al-Din Marsh al-Hakami.  His home had a replica of a Cairene apartment in one room.

(12cm.) high plus handle, no key. * Condition: Winds and runs. Strikes the hours and half hour correctly. Repeat button working correctly. Some scratching to top and base of case. Centre of baseplate dented upwards a little. Hairline crack to top right corner of dial plate. Retailer's name worn. Glass all good with no chips or cracks.

Made in Augsburg, Germany, circa 1570, height 47 cm. This information has been confirmed by Dr. Plassmeyer and Lothar Hasselmeyer, associated with the museum in Dresden. The mechanism in the tower, depicting a hunting scene with the goddess Artemis, the god Actaeon and several animals. Every fifteen minutes the mechanism turns and every full hour a spear is thrown at a jumping rabbit. The clock also has an alarm clock mechanism. The clock has been fully restored by Joost Jongerius.
