SS President Lincoln - an early 20th century French brass and champleve enamel carriage alarm clock, 4.5cm enamel dial, with Arabic numerals, subsidiary alarm dial, bell to underside, swing handle, with enamel panel with stars and stripes and inscribed SS President Lincoln, 13cm high, c.1910. Made for sale on SS. President Lincoln. The ship was built by Harlind & Wolff of Belfast in 1907 as the Scotia for Messrs. Furness, Withy, but sold uncompleted to the Hamburg-America Line and re-named President Lincoln. She plied the Hamburg-New York route, mainly bringing immigrants to the US, being damaged striking both an iceberg and another ship on successive voyages in 1911. She was seized by the American authorities in dock at New York when the US entered WW1 and converted into a transport ship, but was sunk by torpedo 31st May 1918 with the loss of 26 lives. A replacement ship of the name was bought by the Dollar Line in 1922
