Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Herald of the Morning" Oil on masonite painting. This stately ship could haul 1,600 tons of cargo, and was described as a perfect gem in hull and rigging, not unlike a long, light-heeled privateer. The Herald of the Morning boasted clear and roomy decks, and had two fancy brass cannons mounted on her poop deck that added to her bold fighting appearance. During her 20-year career she made 18 westward passages around Cape Horn. Weighing nearly 1,300 tons and measuring 203 feet from bow to stern, the Herald of the Morning was launched in 1853 and soon made her mark as one of the world's fastest sailing ships. On her maiden voyage in 1855, she sailed from Boston to San Francisco in just 100 days, the fastest passage of any ship that year. Size: 25.5 x 26 in. Unframed.
