* Battle of Britain Lace Panel. A fine Jacquard woven commemorative lace panel manufactured by Messrs. Dobsons and M. Browne & Co. Ltd., of Nottingham, c. 1948,extensively embroidered with images and scenes representing the bombing of London and the valiant battle fought by the Royal Air Force in defense of the British Isles against the highly trained and numerically superior German Air Force. From top to bottom the panel depicts badges of the New Zealand Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the RAF, the Royal Australian Air Force and the South African Air Force, the legend `The Battle of Britain` appears on a background of flames, the central panel is dominated by British and German combat aircraft, including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Defiants, Me.`s., Stukkas and Dorniers, with a pilot bailing out over a typical country cottage and an English Mansion, with a large image of St. Paul`s Cathedral surrounded by flames, and a ribbon banner containing Churchill`s words `Never was so much owed by so many to so few`. The side panels containing images of wartorn buildings in London, including a tottering building in Queen Victoria Street, City Temple, the Old Bailey, Buckingham Palace, Bow Church, St. Clement Danes, Walls of the Guildhall, the House of Commons, plus an A/A gun and searchlights in action and a figure of a fighter pilot standing by his aircraft. The border decoration is comprised of ripening ears of corn representing the season during which the Battle of Britain took place, interwoven with Tudor roses, thistles, shamrock and oak leaves, overall size 15 feet long by 65 ins wide (450 x 162.5 cm), in excellent, unblemished condition It is thought that about thirty-eight panels were produced and were presented to King George VI, Winston Churchill, various RAF units, Westminster Abbey, the City of London, the City of Nottingham, the Burgomaster of Holland, airmen from the Commonwealth and several others. The design and weaving of the panels reputedly took over three years to complete and required 40,000 Jacquard pattern cards, 975 bobbins and 41,830m of cotton for each panel. After manufacture was completed the Jacquard was destroyed. (1)

A court sword, hollow-triangular section blade 31 3/4 in. with panels of etched decoration to the forte, all-steel hilt with openwork shell, slender knuckle bow, urn pommel and grip all set with faceted steel studs, steel mounted black leather scabbard, frog stud decorated ensuite to the hilt, complete with a belt and sword bag.
A 19th Century sidearm, curved single-edged blade 26 1/4 in.with ‘false’ back edge for the last 9 1/2 in. and a single broad fuller to each side, marked for Mole and Sons Birmingham and bearing Indian ordnance marks, stirrup hilt with brass knuckle bow and pommel, ribbed cast iron grip, leather scabbard, possibly for use by police or customs officers.
