A rare Mauchline Ware wedding casket of rectangular sarcophagus form, with central photographic panel of ‘Covendale House’, beautifully presented with brass corners, lion’s mask thumb plate and ball feet, with brass plate inscribed ‘To Miss C. L. Maclaren on the occasion of her marriage to Daniel W. Mackenzie Esq., Covendale. From Polly Brown, 16th December 1880, Made from Wood Grown on Covendale Estate’, the hinged lid enclosing light blue silk lined interior, 28cm wide, together with a Mauchline rectangular trinket box, with blue paper lining, the lid printed with the same view of Covendale House, 12cm width. Archibald Brown (1833-1891), undoubtedly the most successful manufacturer of Mauchline Ware, married Mary K. Dalgleish on December 18 1862, and as Polly is a diminutive of Mary, it is possible that Archibald Brown commissioned the wedding casket to be made.. (2)
