A Japanese Meiji period Komai Company of Kyoto nunome-zogan worked metal trinket box, of rounded rectangular form upon four shaped feet, all-over typically gold inlay decorated with leaf and geometric bands, the hinged cover depicting Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto surrounded by trees within a panel and further surround of ivy leaves, bearing 日本國 (Great Japan) 京都 (Kyoto) 住 (live) 駒井 (Komai) 製 (make) mark verso dating the piece to circa 1900, approx dimensions 8 x 6.5 x 2.5cm, 201gNote: The Komai family workshop was established in Kyoto in 1848 as a sword fittings manufacturer. In 1853, the founder Komai Seibei originated a form of damascene - nunome zogan, which the family began applying to other pieces after the Haito Edict of 1876 prohibited the wearing of swords. Exterior excellent, minor handling wear only to roof of main building on cover.No dents.Hinge good.Inside of cover inscribed ‘Japan 1900’Otherwise a very good example.
