An Oak box with brass plaque inscribed 'A.J Buckley R.E Mesopotamia 1916-17-18' containing a WWI Victory medal and British War medal belonging to 202253 SPR A.J Buckley R.E, a Royal Engineers' cap badge,a photograph of A.J Buckley and a compass. Also belonging to the aforementioned is a document from the Inland Water Transport congratulating Lance Corporal A.J Buckley W.R 552953 on his return home, signed by Brigadier-General R.H.W Hughes dated Bas rah 28-1-1919 along with a tag stamped with his name and number. Other items include a WWII Auxillary Fire Service A.F.S. lapel badge stirling silver no.140290 and a tag A.F.S 8112 Buckley A.J., Birmingham, a suede purse containing coins, a Benson & Hedges cigarette tin covered in red leather, a gentleman's leather wallet, a trinket box with a carving of "Muckross Abbey" and a white metal plaque coat of arms.
A highly collectable Continental design mixed hardwoods campaign Chest/Cabinet on Chest/Cabinet, the base with a pair of opposing doors having patent steel plate locks/latches, opening to reveal an interior with five drawers having turned wooden knobs and unusual feature beading, the plinth below featuring a central long drawer and raised on large diameter compressed bun feet, the upper section having opposing doors with spiral feature pillars with Ionic capitals, again with high quality latches/locks with pierced/fret-worked plates and strap hinges, revealing the interior with thirteen short drawers and a central cupboard revealing a recess and a flight of six trinket drawers, the pediment with a frieze drawer beneath an egg and dart design frieze, the base of the upper section also including two short drawers and two secret drawers and a compartment, heavy wrought iron carrying handles are fitted to each of the upper and lower sections. 58 1/2" wide x 76 1/2" high x 23" deep. Two keys of early design are present. (This piece interestingly has come from the family descendants of General Sir David Baird of Newbyth, 1st Bt. (1757-1829), General Sir David Baird is renowned for his military campaigns in India, Egypt and South Africa. An engraving seen at the premises being cleared; but which is being retained by the family, illustrates an event during the siege of Seringapatam in the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War where the two young sons of the Sultan were arrested. The inscription refers to "The Surrender of two sons of Tippoo Sultaun where Major General Baird ordered the Sultaun to appear and was informed he was not at the palace but that his sons would surrender themselves. Major Allen then went into the Palace and shortly returned with the two Princes who were received by the General with the greatest kindnefs and humility".)
