1 Large early 20th century Cat playing a fiddle button. This rare example of the Cat and the Fiddle is made of a heavy bronze and is very detailed. These buttons have always sold for anywhere from $1200 to over $2000 as they are that rare and desirable. There is only one early (1940's) button book that had an example pictured in it, thats how scarce they are. The detail along with the wonderful whimsicle design made this button extremely desirable. 1 Large 20th century hand carved scene under glass button. The buttons like this one are reminiscent of the 18th century hand carved and cut out of natural material buttons from Dieppe France. The Motiwala Brothers of India copied the technique in the 1950's and created examples like this one using various colored foil backgrounds set under glass and mounted in silver. This nice example depicts a man playing a horn while sitting under a detailed tree. Nice. These types of buttons are some of the scarcer type buttons the Motiwala studios produced. Complete set of 52 single ended playing cards by Gibson and Hunt, circa 1801, each each 9 x 6.5cm, together with contemporary box. Mr Rayner's cataloguing states: '52-card single-ended standard pack. Square corners, plain back. AS is GIBSON & HUNT, die no 103, cut in July 1801 according to Berry: page 44. 'Superfine' embossed on AC Notes on a similar pack by Roddy Somerville from 'Curator's Corner' on WCMPC website, where he describes a gift of a similar pack to the Company with an AS 'Gibson, Hunt & Son'. He explains that the pack can be dated precisely because this AS was in use only from October 1801 to September 1803, and that Gibson & Hunt was earlier (presumably meaning that this AS was in use only from July to October 1801?)'. Hall & Son 'Piquet' set of 52 reduced size with wide borders single ended playing cards, circa 1806, housed in period card box, each 9 x 5.6cm. Mr Rayner's catalogue notes state 'Standard (if a little idiosyncratic) English small size single-ended courts. Sometimes referred to, erroneously, as 'Piquet', because Piquet was not played at this time, so more likely to be for gambling, such as Bassette - see Lodge reference. Hall & Son existed 1799-1810 (Lodge p. 181). The AS has 'sixpence additional duty three times (1801-1828 - Berry reference). The AS is identified as Die No 7, nos 1-20 being registered as 'new' to Hall & Son in 1806 - page 45 Berry reference.'. 18th century complete set of 52 single ended cards by Lewellyn, circa 1777, plain backed, with partial wrapper, each card approximately 9.5 x 6.5cm. NB: In Mr Rayner's notes he states 'The AS is (similar to) Berry type A2, but without the sixpence additional duty. The die no is 22. This die no for Llewellyn is not recorded in Berry, nor is any record of a die no without the 'Six Pence Addtl Duty' legend, which was introduced in 1776. However, as Llewellyn took over from McEvoy 1777 all his ASs should have this legend'. Mr Rayner notes: 'A 54 card version of the 'Domestic Scenes' tarot - IPCS (FT3) - preferred titte is "Bourgeois', and Thierry Depaulis refers to it as 'Nouveau'. Domestic and other scenes on the trump cards. In Tarot, Jeu et Mage', Thierry Depaulis (page 128) provides a list of the scenes on the tarot cards, and the order in which they are portrayed on the trumps. This pack has those scenes, but not in the order shown in that list. e.g. Tarot 9 in this pack (see scan) is trump 21 in the Depaulis list. A SET OF POLYCHROME-PAINTED, GILT AND LACQUERED NINETY-SIX MUGHAL GANJIFA PLAYING CARDS WITH LIDDED BOX Possibly Maharashtra, Central - Western India, 19th centuryComprising ninety-six (8 suits with 12 cards each) polychrome-painted, gilt and lacquered playing cards (ganjifa), each of rounded shape, illustrated with a variety of Indian subjects including enthroned Maharajas, riders on their steeds, acrobats, musicians, dancers, large celebrations, interiors, and banqueting scenes, as well as animals, set against alternating red, yellow, green and blue grounds, the reverse with a chequered grid with clusters of red dots filling the squares, fitted in a rectangular box with sliding lid, polychrome-painted, heightened with gold and lacquered, featuring courtly processions and hunting scenes on the sides, and a courtly interior scene with a crowned princess or queen standing in a white pavilion, in conversation with two male attendants, sprays of white flowers decorating the outer borders and edges of the box.each token 4.5cm diameterthe box 9.3cm x 18cm x 7.8cm The South Asian card game known as Ganjifa first reached India from Iran in the early 16th century and it has remained very popular in India, Pakistan, as well as Iran and Turkey until now. In Mughal times, each complete pack of ganjifa cards had to be eight-suited (Mughal ganjifa). These sets were then later replaced by the Dashavatara ganjifa set, in which each suit represents one of Vishnu's avatars. A complete example of ganjifa pack can be seen in the Ashmolean Museum Collection, Oxford (inv. no. EAX.2078). Qty: 1
