APOCALYPSE NOW (1979) - "Death From Above" Air Cav Death Cards and Behind-The-Scenes-Photographs A sealed pack of Air Cav death cards from Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar®-winning Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now. Lieutenant-Colonel Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall) used Air Cav playing cards as 'death cards' to show who had killed Vietnamese villagers. The plastic-sealed playing cards bear the emblem of the First Air Cavalry Division with Kilgore’s helicopter motto 'Death From Above' over a green and white lightning bolt design. The cards are accompanied by two behind-the-scenes photographs from the production, featuring a topless Francis Ford Coppola, Frederic Forrest and Sam Bottoms. The photographs display some light wear around the edges. Card dimensions: 9 cm x 6 cm x 2 cm (3 ½" x 2 ½" x ¾"); Photo dimensions: 9 cm x 11 cm (3 ½" x 4 ½") Please note the photographs in this lot are sold without copyright, reproduction rights, licensing agreements or any other type of legal release. 19th century gold mounted, enamelled ivory counter box of cylindrical form, screw cover, the slightly domed top centred by depiction of a playing card within borders, housing five ivory counters CONDITION REPORT Box 3cm wide, counters 2.6cm wide. Some of the enamel cells are not entirely filled on cover, unclear whether these are slight losses or just absent since construction, otherwise ok. Tokens are smaller than cylinder and do not fit snuggly but stylistically in keeping.
A Mahogany & Satinwood Cross-banded Fold-over Card Table inlaid with decorative stringing. The serpentine top on square tapering legs; one rear leg swinging out to support the fold-over leaf, opening to reveal a green baize playing surface, 29½ ins (75 cms) high, 36 ins (91 cms) wide, 17½ ins (44 cms) deep.
Two Card Cases, An Antique Chinese Folding Lantern and a decorative Japanese Pen Tray. One card case being Anglo-Indian sandalwood intricately carved with temples and birds amongst scrolling foliage. The other micro-mosaic card case with bands of fine geometric inlay. The Chinese lantern with round wooden base and hinged top 3¼ ins (8 cms) in diameter, capping pleated paper shade (A/F). The cast metal tray of rectangular form decorated with gold and brown patinated monkeys playing amongst wisteria boughs, 9¾ ins x 3¾ ins (25 cm x 9.5 cms).
A Fine Mid 19th Century Boulle-work Fold Over Card Table having red tortoiseshell panels of elaborate scrolling brass inlay, within ebonised borders. The serpentine top swivelling around and folding out to reveal the baize playing surface, above a swept apron adorned with a gilt bronze bearded face mask. Standing on square tapering cabriole legs with decorative gilt bronze mounts.
A Victorian rosewood card table, the shaped leather set top with swivel action and hinged leaf enclosing the playing surface and covering a shallow storage space, raised on turned and carved bulbous supports united by a stretcher with outswept carved scrolling legs to castors, top 93.5 x 92cm when opened, height 73cm.

A Victorian hallmarked silver chamber stick modelled as a spade (playing card suit), with raised crimped rim, maker's marks partially rubbed, possibly William Comyns & Sons, London 1886, also bearing a flower head mark flanked by initials C&C (probably retailer's mark), length 14cm including loop handle, approx 2.7ozt.

'In die nativitatis domini', illuminated manuscript on thick card, 9 pages, finely illuminated in gold and colours, opening page with large elaborate historiated initial with an angel playing a rebec, signed 'D. Mark' lower right, remaining pages with text and music on 4-line staves surrounded by elaborate borders of varying styles (incorporating one Virgin and Child vignette, cherubs, angels, dragons, flowers, saints, etc.), 2 further decorated initials, one incorporating a sleeping Jesus, and one vignette on p[7], In sabbato sancto bendictio cerei, 8 pages, illuminated in red, blue and green, the music and text enclosed by ornate borders in leafy geometric patterns, 2 parts in 1 volume, the 9 leaves mounted on guards, full red panelled morocco by Lamcroft and Lawrence, sides with inner and outer ornate borders, upper cover lettered in gilt 'Pax', gilt panelled spine with raised bands and floral tools, inner gilt dentelles, gilt edges, 530 x 415 mm, together with another volume containing 3 illuminated manuscript leaves on paper, the first 2 finely illuminated in gold and colours (one miniature of the Resurrection, elaborate initials and borders), window-mounted, and with 3 further loosely inserted leaves in the same style as the 'In sabbato sancto bendictio' above, modern cloth, leaf size 355 x 275 mm, both volumes preserved in solander box Provenance: Fernham Priory, early 20th century. The Priory was first established in 1832 at Princethorpe, Warwickshire, by a community of Benedictine nuns from Montargis near Orleans who fled from France in 1792 after being persecuted during the French Revolution. The Priory was at one time the largest in England with over 200 nuns. In 1966 dwindling numbers led to the move to Fernham, and in 2001 the Priory closed and the nuns were dispersed. (1)
