A good walnut rectangular card table of "Queen Anne" design with recessed front and sides, the top with matched veneer panels and crossbanded and opening to reveal fine needlework inset with playing cards, coins and various flowers around the borders, with square candle stands to corners, with plain aprons and on bold cabriole legs with leaf carving to the knees and claw and ball feet, 27.75ins wide x 14.25ins deep x 28.5ins high (piece of veneer missing to right side apron and small block missing from left rear leg) Provenance : Sir Philip and Lady Haldin, formerly of Lympne Place, Lympne, Hythe, Kent and thence by family descent

VIOLINISTS: Jan Kubelik (1880-1940) Czech Violinist and Composer. A.M.Q.S., Jan Kubelik, on an oblong 12mo card, n.p., 1st April 1928. In bold dark fountain pen ink Kubelik has penned a three bar quotation from an unidentified work. Together with Zino Francescatti (1905-1991) French Violinist. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the image depicting Francescatti standing in a three quarter length pose playing his violin. Signed in fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image and dated New York, March 1947 in his hand. Inscribed to Alfred Pochon (1878-1959) Swiss Violinist and Composer, Also including Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) American-born Violinist. Signed and inscribed 7 x 5 photograph the image depicting Menuhin in a profile head and shoulders pose playing his violin. Signed in bold black ink to the lower white border, and dated 1978 in his hand. Some light staining and surface creasing to the photographs, G to about VG, 3. £100-150
AKIHITO: (1933- ) Emperor of Japan 1989- . Rare A.L.S., Akihito, as Crown Prince, three pages, 8vo, Tokyo, 3rd July 1957, to Princess Lilian, on a white card featuring a blind embossed Imperial seal. The Prince explains that he takes the opportunity of the recent appointment of the Ambassador of Japan to Belgium, to send the present letter, and asks his correspondent `How is the weather in Brussels now? I remember it was very agreeable in July when I visited there four years ago. Here in Tokyo it will be quite hot very soon. I am intending to stay for about a month in August in Karuizawa, where the weather is very similar to that of Brussels, and I shall enjoy playing tennis mostly there.´ Further referring to a Japanese ancient fishing practice `Before going up there, I will go to Gifu to see cormorant fishing. Have you ever heard about it? It is an old traditional way of fishing in which cormorants are used to catch fish in the river.´ Akihito concludes by asking his correspondent about the progress in the preparation of the International Exposition in Brussels and proclaims `I am quite sure it will be a grand occasion of festivity.´ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Prince. An excellent letter. EX £1000-1500 Princess Lilian of Belgium (1916-2002) Also known as Princess of Réthy. Second wife of King Leopold III of the Belgians. Lilian agreed to marry the King in 1941, but declined the title of Queen. It was agreed that any descendants of the King's new marriage would be excluded from succession to the throne.

Collection comprises of 17 photographs (4"x6"), 16 negatives and 20 images on contact sheets. Four of the images of the house clearly show the white Eero Saarinen chairs which are being sold in lot 249. Images on contact sheets without negs and prints include 2 x Julian playing guitar and one of a sports card. An early 20th century walnut card box decorated with rectangular panels within leather gilt heightened borders to sides, the hinged lid centred with a circular painted enamel plaque depicting playing cards, enclosing three compartments and four separate lidded boxes, each with enamel plaque painted with suits of playing cards, 26 x 18cm. CONDITION REPORT: The enamel plaque to the lid has several minor chips to outside border and one significant chip. Also the leather border of the lid is stained, has areas of rubbing and has one section missing in one corner. Minor dents and scratches predominantly to the front side. The wooden escutcheon has two chips. The interior is in very good condition. One of the plaques on one of the interior boxes appears to have been reglued.
