Arnold Kirke-Smith's Oxford Football Association members' rules booklet from 1872, Arnold Kirke-Smith being England's inside-right in the world's first international football match v Scotland 30th November 1872, the rules booklet in the form of a folded card measuring 4 7/8 by 3 1/2in., the reverse addressed in ink to 'A Kirke Smith Esq., Univ. Coll.', printed with 8 rules agreed upon at a meeting of the club held 9th November 1871, listing Kirke -Smith as Club President together with the treasurer, secretary and the names of the 38 members; sold together with family papers comprising, (i) a sheet of paper inscribed in ink 'Kirke Smith, Barnes Hall, 1858', (ii) a Christmas card inscribed in ink 'To Father and Mother from Arthur Dec 17', (iii) a menu from the Cottenham Hunt meeting 6th March 1906 inscribed Mrs Kyrke [sic] Smith, (iv) a Cambridge University United Hunts Souper du Bal dated 16th February 1911; (vi) an undated envelope from the Vacuum Oil Company of Bombay addressed in typescript to A Kirke Smith Esq C/o Messrs Little & Co., Solicitors, Central Bank Building, Bombay; & (vi) a postcard date-stamped 27 Jun 25 from the Poona and Kirkee Hounds addressed in hand to Kirke Smith at the aforementioned Bombay address Arnold Kirke-Smith was born at the family home Barnes Hall at Ecclesfield near Sheffield on 23rd April 1850. He was educated at Cheltenham College before going on to Oxford University. Kirke-Smith was president and playing captain of the Oxford University football team and played in only the second F.A. Cup final of 1873, when the University team finished runners-up to The Wanderers. All but one of the Oxford Cup finalists are members listed in the present members' booklet. During his career he also represented the Sheffield FA and the original Sheffield Football Club. Most notably, Kirke-Smith also played in the world's first football international between England and Scotland on 30th November 1872, The knitted woollen England jersey worn by Kirke-Smith in that match was sold at auction at Christie's in 1998 for £21000. After leaving University, Kirke-Smith was ordained in 1875. Some of the family papers in this lot relate to his son Arthur who was born in 1878 and educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge. Arthur Kirke-Smith became a partner of Little & Co., Solicitors and Notaries Public in Bombay. The present lot offers a rare and historic opportunity to acquire memorabilia related to a footballer with links to the birth of international football and the infancy of the F.A. Cup competition.

A silver and gold inlay card case presented to Pedro Petrone the Uruguayan gold medal winning footballer from the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, the hinged silver case inlaid with gold bands, the gilt interior inscribed Viiia Olympiada, Los Uruguayos En Paris A Los Campeones Mundials De Foot-ball, Pedro Petrone, Paris 1924, 9 by 7.5 cm., 3 1/2 by 3 in. Pedro Petrone was one of the most famous Uruguayan players of the period, and indeed completed a magnificent hat-trick of gold medals in the 1928 Olympics and the inaugural World Cup of 1930. He was known as 'Perucho' or 'El Artillero' [The Gunner] on account of his exceptional goalscoring record. He started his playing career at Charley before moving to the top club side Nacional. He was then bought by the Italian team Fiorentina, where he ended his career.

An Exceptionally Fine 19th Century Inlaid Satinwood Fold-over Card Table of exhibition quality attributed to Mansfield and Wright. The bow-fronted satinwood top with a central oval scenic panel of various contrasting veneers enhanced with engraving. Depicting Aurora in her celestial chariot drawn by horses amongst clouds with shafts of light radiating from the emerging sun behind, framed in a broad king-wood border inlaid with a row of anthemion motifs and surrounded by delicate scrolls of foliage issued from cornucopia and swagged in drapery with fluttering ribbon bows. The outer harewood borders edged in kingwood crossbanding & strings of decorative inlay with rosettes adorning the rounded corner protuberants. The top folding over to reveal a green baize playing surface with dished counter wells to the corners. The frieze finely inlaid with a musical trophy in a centre panel flanked by lozenge cut veneers accentuated with ebony outlines. Standing on tapering legs finely carved with bulbs of crested acanthus leaves and terminating on brass caps & castors; the rear legs swinging out on brass brackets to support the top. 36 ins x 18 ins (81 cms x 46 cms) and 30½ ins (77.5 cms) in height.

EDWARD BAWDEN. (1903-1989). Watercolour and ink, stylised figure of a jester on a black cartouche, signed in monogram, 11.5cm x 7.5cm, framed; an edition of “Edward Bawden” The Penguin Modern Painters, 1946, sixteen colour and sixteen black and white plates; a handwritten letter from Bawden’s mother discussing the issuing of the accompanying book, Bawden’s appointment as an Associate of the Royal Academy on 28th October 1947 and his receiving a CBE from the King for his war services, letter dated 19.12.47 from the artist’s parental home in Felsted, Essex. (3). The vendor’s family were close friends with the both the artist and his family. The vendor believes this work was executed early in Bawden’s career prior to 1928. As a student at the Royal College of Art Bawden studied heraldry and manuscripts and developed a strong interest in calligraphy and illumination. For his final diploma in book illustration he produced designs which were likened to playing card motifs.

Address stamped House of Commons, approx 18.5 by 24cm; the third dated 21 August 1925 "I was so glad to have time with you for a good talk. The outlook does not improve very much. I have rarely read a more blatantly mischievous speech than one delivered last week by one of you MP's whom we referred occasionally to" addressed Lossiemouth on Foreign Office paper, approx 12.5 by 18.5cm; Ibid. Three typed signed letters, including one dated 15th September 1937, "My Dear Geordie… I am mightily amused to see how the T.U.C. have at last discovered how right we were in our general outlook and the way the situation in 1931 was handled. Note: James Ramsay Macdonald (1866-1937) was Prime Minister twice, the first occasion in 1924 when he became Britain's first Labour Prime Minister. Born in Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Macdonald moved to Bristol as a teenager and then to London in 1886. A growing interest in left-wing politics led him to become a member of Keir Hardie's Independent Labour Party in 1894, standing in both 1895 and 1900 only to be defeated on both occasions. In 1900 Macdonald became Secretary of the Labour Representation Committee, a position that would allow him to negotiate with the Liberal Party giving Labour its first breakthrough into the House of Commons. By 1906, the LRC, now just the "Labour Party", absorbed the ILP and 28 of its members were elected as MP's, with Macdonald becoming MP for Leicester.
