A Very Fine, Early And Large Colour-Lithograph Monkey Chamber Orchestra Musical Automaton Picture, French, circa 1860, The early key-wind cylinder movement Ser. No. 6593, Gamme No. 774, playing four melodically brilliant airs, with single-spring motor and single-section comb on plain brass bedplate, 'Pan Greek' blue ink tunesheet, with the separate automaton motor with simple plates and dual linear-direction pulleys for the nine individual movements to double bass, panpiper, violist, drummer, cymbal percussionist and lead violinist conductor, the lithographed figures within a stone-walled chamber dressed with drapes and painting, an attentive dog and loose score on titled floor, picture bears signature Riviere, behind glass within the decorative carved and ebonised-finished gesso box frame, automatic change/repeat to bedplate and start/stop actuations to side - overall 34'' 87cm wide, the height 26'', 67cm, the cylinder 8'', 20cm Footnote: This very early example shows the much earlier pre-commercial design of larger wooden dowels for each of the actions from the back, coupled with separate wire and card weight balances as used for the returns. Unusually, the tension points with pulleys are complete and original. These superb box framed-format automatons from the early-late 19th century are usually the smaller sized examples featuring cats and dogs. Monkeys and people are far rarer from the few surviving examples left. The effect when running is astonishing, especially with the more-refined examples such as this, where the movement would invariably be correctly synchronised to the music.Click HERE to view a video of this lot

Some old splits, chips and losses. Movement within the frame overall. Red baize is a replacement. It bear the expected wear, marks and some discolourations. It has some tears and fading along the fold line to the centre and some lifting and wear to the edges. Metalware appears original. No key present, lock is open. Some old veneer and moulding repairs - see images. Some filler applied in places. Evidence of old worm in places throughout - see images. Y A PAIR OF REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND PARTRIDGEWOOD CROSSBANDED FOLDING CARD TABLESCIRCA 1815Each opening to a red baize inset playing surface each 75cm high, 92cm wide, 43cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use. Some colour variations due to sun fading the timber; one top darker than the other. The folding tops have gaps between them when closed suggesting that there is some warping to the tops. The later red wool baize insets are faded, stained, one is torn along the fold and they are not cut to fit quite snugly to the recess. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
Y A PAIR OF REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND BRASS INLAID FOLDING CARD TABLESCIRCA 1815 The hinged tops opening to baize inset playing surfaceseach 73cm high, 91cm wide, 45cm deep (when closed)Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and use. Some old chips and splits. The patina is fair . The colour is also fair overall. The tops are more faded as often seen due to sunlight/ polishing. The appearance of the surface could be simply improved by an experienced restored/ polisher. There are some areas of lifting to the brass stringing but all brass is present. Careful and relatively simple attention by a restorer could make good on the stringing. Some areas of other untidiness to the brass stringing Some indentation to the brass collars of the stems, one small nail has historically been put in at one position to secure. Some movement to the structure of the joints at the front corners of the tops (in three places) have caused some movement between elements (see images). In one position a replaced section of veneer has been crudely painted to simulate rosewood. The joint of one front leg of one table needs simple re-securing. The tables overall and the tops on the tables are stable. Some other legs have previously been re-secured, attention to some of the old repairs would improve their appearance. One back leg has previously been secured with a dowel joint that could be disguised. The rear corner of one top is slightly raised due to a poorly executed old repair. This also could be improved with fairly simple restoration. The interior baize is tidy overall and has been replaced not many years ago. There is very little minor untidiness to the edges of the baize itself, the adjacent banded edges with some untidiness and glue residue that requires careful cleaning to remove. Some old repairs. some small losses. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
A GEORGE II MAHOGANY FOLDING CARD TABLE POSSIBLY IRISH, CIRCA 1750 The hinged and shaped top opening to a baize inset playing surface and counter wells 72cm high, 83cm wide, 41cm deep (when closed)Together with a letter of provenance, the letter probably 19th century in date and titled 'Card table from Flaxley Abbey'.Provenance: Flaxley Abbey, GloucestershireCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some small old repairs. Some additional dark marks and ring marks to top. Baize is a later replacement. It has some wear and fraying to edges and has 'bubbled' slightly along the fall line. Some plugged holes visible to front counter wells. Handle is a later addition (it appears to be early 19th century). The table originally would have had a 'blind' drawer (without handle). A later screw has been applied to the side of the drawer to stop it being pulled out fully. Some old vacant screw holes to the underside from where previous supports have been applied to splits in the board of the underside. Later baize has been applied to the top of the hinged rear leg. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
