The entertaining picture of the pirate ship appears not to have been published. The second item is a preparatory drawing for 'Faithful John', one of the tales contained in the first Folkard edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales , which was published by A. & C. Black in 1911. The Folkard Font was designed by the artist and used extensively both by him and others, its popularity resulting in a version which is still in use today. The Folkard Font has swashed capital letters and variant forms of a number of the letters and has become popular as a font for book covers and merchandising, particularly in association with fairy and fantasy subject matter. Charles Folkard owned a seaside cottage, which he and his son built, at Winchelsea in Sussex, and the clapperboard house drawings in this lot were almost certainly executed there.

* Ned Kelly. An archive of original artwork relating to the 1970 film Ned Kelly starring Mick Jagger, by George S. Crossley (1919-1973), 1969, 99 pencil and pen & ink drawings and sketches, one or two with watercolour, on thick textured or coloured paper mounted on card, mostly signed and captioned with subject, place, and date, comprising: 54 head studies of the cast (including extras and stuntmen) and film crew, 3 additionally signed by cast member (Janne Wolmsley, Bob Bruning, and Ted Bunn); 10 figure studies, including several of musicians and 2 of Mick Jagger as Ned Kelly, both showing him in court; and 35 drawings of scenes with figures (some with Mick Jagger), exterior and interior locations and buildings, sets, props, horses, steam locomotives, etc., most captioned, e.g. 'Kelly escaping from the cutting', 'Bedervale Homestead', 'Kelly's collapse when wounded', 'Frank Thrine as Judge Barry', 'Ken Shorter playing the battered piano' - Glenrowan Pub after the fight', 'Rehearsals for the Ambush of Kelly in the Glenrowan Railway cutting', 'Spectators at fight scene', a few with minor marks, but mostly in good condition, largest 37 x 50 cm (14.5 x 19.75 ins), smallest 24 x 31 cm (9.5 x 12 ins), contained in a large portfolio (Qty: 99)NOTESAustralian artist George S. Crossley was born in Perth, Western Australia. He studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School under William Dargie, going on to become a drawing master there himself. He worked as a television artist for the BBC in London, and held exhibitions in Europe, India and the Middle East, as well as in all the major Australian cities. He was awarded the Tumut Prize in 1959 and the Redcliffe Prize in 1964, and his work is represented in a number of Australian institutions. The 1970 film Ned Kelly was directed by Tony Richardson and starred Mick Jagger in the title role, with Mark McManus playing the part of Kelly's friend Joe Byrne. It was a British production, but filmed entirely in Australia, shot mostly around Braidwood in New South Wales, with a largely Australian supporting cast. It was the seventh Australian feature film to tell the story of the infamous 19th-century bushranger Ned Kelly and the first to be shot in colour.
