BARRIE, Sir JAMES M. (1860-1937). 10 A.Ls.S. to Lucy Clifford, from Black Lake Cottage, Nr Farnham; Adelphi Terrace House, and Stanway, Glos. 15pp., 8 vo., (one in pencil), 1906-26, with 3 envelopes. The correspondence began after Lucy sent her Anyhow Stories to Barrie, "I kept coming across things that I shall never forget and that also made me sigh for not haveing thought of them myself". Thereafter, he commented on her plays, and in 1920 says she may quote his opinion to Frederic Harrison (10)
SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. (1856-1950). Two A.Ls.S. to Lucy Clifford, from Oakwood Park Hotel, Conway, North Wales, 19th (in pencil) and 22nd April 1928. 1 ½ pp., 4to., and 1 1/2 pp. 8vo. With envelopes. He writes about her play A Woman Alone, “It is really a horrible play; for it represents a woman as relapsing abjectly into Victorianism after a struggle to extricate herself which consists of applying the ultra-Victorian rule for emancipation: quarrel with your husband…” He refers to her husband, “Of course W.K.C. was cleverer than you. But he was actually cleverer than ME – cleverer than anyone you know except Einstein”. Two splendidly forthright letters (2)
