Burma, 6th November 1943 to 31st August 1944 - A Hand Written Diary, being an account of a British soldier's experiences exploring the countryside and engaging with the Japanese enemy. Taken from his original pencil written account and transferred by him to an 'Army Book 152 Correspondence Book (Field Service)', of approximately 174 pages, with a Preface and a Prologue dated 11/11/44 in which he states ''My visit to Burma was stormy enough - I went through hell and agony and torment, almost to breaking point. But, my recollections are also pleasant, impossibly pleasant. Without hesitation I can say that the happiest days of my life were spent there, even our withdrawal and the horror of the war on the plains of Imphal were all sources of interest and enlightenment...'' The last page is indistinctly signed J Ibbeton??. Lacking two pages at the beginning.

Naval interest. A collection relating to the career of Capt. John Henry Howard RN (1827 - 1926) including diary covering his early years, 1835 - 1840, first posting on board HMS Rodney at Devonport in September 1840; ALS to his father from the naval instructor on Rodney reporting on the young midshipman, 1841; ms. sea chart in ink of "Part of the Querimba Islands (1827)" with pencil note by JHH "HMS Hydra got aground on coral in endeavouring to go through Dupont pass… came off without damage."; covering letter from the Admiralty awarding him the medal for services in Egypt (this crossed out and replaced with Syria in ms., torn), 1850; letter advising him of his election as Honorary Member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, 1875; letter from General Sir William Jervis and others, printed Souvenir of the Royal Naval Exhibition [1891], 8vo., orig. cloth gilt, photographic illustrations; album, fine ridged green calf, a.e.g., with gilt clasps in orig. cloth box, containing mainly family portrait photographs, window mounted, but including the Prince and Princess of Wales, and group at the Naval College Portsmouth, 1862. (a lot) Capt. Howard was the second son of the Very Rev. Hon. Henry E.J. Howard, Dean of Lichfield (see lot XXX), and lived at Rushett, Faversham, Kent. The incident relating to HMS Hydra took place on 20th Feb. 1854 in the Indian Ocean off Mozambique.
Nightingale, Florence. ALS,10 South Street, Nov. 19/87. 3pp., 8vo., in pencil with original envelope, to Mrs. John Howard (wife of Capt. John Howard). She regrets "I was unable to accept your most tempting invitation to a Persian kitten to come by your Cook from Up Berkeley Sq…My only "he" is 'boarding out' in the country!... but he is, I fear, too much grown up to be a nice companion in your schoolroom…I am always under stress of work & illness…I hope I have not too disappointed your children."
Plenderleith, Donald. The Mad Hatter's Tea Party, wood-engraving, titled and signed in pencil, small wormhole to centre of image, 200mm x 295mm, glazed Donald Plenderleith (1921-1995) was a painter, print-maker and teacher. He was born in Peebles and studied at Ealing School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.
