Lot 896

A 19th century ebonised, amboyna-banded and gilt-metal mounted pier cabinet, the slightly overhanging top above a frieze centred with a marquetry patera, the single glazed door enclosing shelves, raised on plinth base (79cm wide x 32cm deep x 97cm high)The cabinet does not have a key, opening the door is very stiff on the hinge side of things but does shut flush and in the auctioneer’s opinion if someone could find a key this would be fine.  Looking at the left hand return from the front there is a 1cm piece of veneer away plus further strips of veneer away where the return plinth moulding touches the ground.  Also on the left hand side there is a 2cm piece of thin cast moulding away.  Some scratches and scuffs commensurate with age mostly to the lower plinth base.  Some minor pencil marks and indentations to the top.  The pine back has been painted with a red ochre which is original.  In the auctioneer’s opinion it wouldn’t take too much to get the piece up to scratch.  Looking at it from the front there is a 5/6cm piece of metal casting away just underneath the frieze.  Opening the door and looking inside the lock has now disappeared from the door and the material which covers the shelves and lines the bottom is very faded indeed although the shelves appear to be strong and would withstand the weight of several books etc.
