Drawing done for the early stages of the "prix de Rome" contest in 1816 with the subject being "Oenone Refusant de Secourir Paris" [although he was not one of the finalists]. MARIE LAURENCIN [FR 1885-1956], PENCIL, WASH, COLORED CRAYONS, H 5 3/4", W 5 1/2``, "LA DAME EN BLEU: 20.6 x 15.6 cm paper; signed under the mount; inscribed in another hand, "La Dame en Bleu" and stamped, "Me Guy Loudmer/Cahier/Marie Laurencin/Commissaire Priseur. Provenance: purchased from Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox Ltd., London, July 12, 1985, catalogue no. 39 in the exhibition, "Nineteenth Century French Drawings, 13 June - 12 July 1985" [photocopy of bill of sale in customer file, also label on verso of frame].
A.R. PENCK [GERMAN B. 1939], PARTIAL SUITE OF GRAPHICS, 13, H 30" X W 42" SHEET: From "Expedition to the Holyland"; graphics in silkscreen, engraving/etching, aquatint and lithography; 1983; printed at the Burston Graphic Center, Jerusalem on Arches Velin paper; this edition pencil signed and numbered in Hebrew letters [corresponding to I-XIV]; Private edition - Joshua Gessel; includes the contents and justification page and the text page. Two graphics are framed with the rest of the lot being unframed and contained in a non-original large, black cloth covered hard shell portfolio case.
Mary Fedden (1915-2012) British. A Lady in a Bath Chair, with a blowing veil, in a coastal scene, a figure in the distance stand on a sand bank, Watercolour on Japanese Paper, Signed and Dated 1978 in Pencil, numbered on reverse ‘23’, 6.25” 7.25”. Provenance; Midland Group Gallery, Dorothie Field, Richard Miller, then by family descent.
John McKirdy Duncan (Scottish, 1866-1945), Mousehole, signed and titled, watercolour and pencil, unframed, 35.5 x 45cm.; 14 x 17.75in. * Studied at the Dundee School of Art and then spent three years in London before leaving for Antwerp and Dusseldorf. As an illustrator of literary works and in his drawings for newspapers and magazines Duncan was influenced by the 18th century Japanese decorative style (korin) and by the work of 19th century engravers. Duncan also painted genre scenes inspired by Scottish legends. He received many commissions for church decorations, both paintings and stained-glass windows.
