BOXING: A printed 8vo menu for a Press Luncheon held in honour of Jack Dempsey ('World's Heavyweight Champion and Star of Universal's “Fight & Win” Films') hosted by the European Motion Picture Co. Ltd., in the Abraham Lincoln Room of the Savoy Hotel, 18th May 1925, individually signed by various individuals in attendance including Jack Dempsey (1895-1983, American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1919-26) and his wife Estelle Taylor (1894-1958, American Actress, wife of Dempsey from 1925-31), Frank Moran (1887-1967, American Boxer who fought twice for the World Heavyweight Championship, and later became a film actor), Jimmy Wilde (1892-1969, Welsh Boxer, World Flyweight Champion 1916-23), Bombardier Billy Wells (1889-1967, English Boxer, British and British Empire Heavyweight Champion 1911-19), Gilbert Frankau (1884-1952, British Novelist) and Carl Brisson (1893-1958, Danish Actor & Singer who starred in Alfred Hitchcock's film The Ring). All have signed with their names alone, Dempsey and Wilde in fountain pen inks and the others in bold pencil. ALI MUHAMMAD: (1942- ) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion. Blue ink signature ('Muhammad Ali') to the centre of a partially printed small 8vo page removed from a pocket diary and bearing the heading 'Forward Planner 1981'. With a few ink and pencil entries above and below Ali's signature in the hand of the previous owner of the diary. VG Provenance: According to information supplied by the vendor, he obtained the signature of Ali in person at the Pierre Hotel in New York in 1981 when the boxer was lunching at a neighbouring table in the hotel's restaurant.
BRABHAM JACK: (1926-2014) Australian Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1959, 1960 & 1966. Signed colour 23 x 16.5 print entitled Heading for Victory by artist Alan Fearnley (1987), the image depicting Brabham racing his Repco Brabham at speed to achieve his first win at the 'Ring' in the German Grand Prix, 7th August 1966. ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. A vintage printed large 4to concert programme for a performance by Louis Armstrong and his Concert Group, c.1952, signed by Armstrong with his name alone in blue ink to a clear area of an inside page alongside his printed portrait. Also signed by Arvell Shaw (1923-2002, American Jazz Double-Bassist) in pencil with his name alone to an inside page alongside his printed portrait and brief biography. HONEGGER ARTHUR: (1892-1955) Swiss Composer, a member of Les Six. A.M.Q.S., A Honegger, in bold pencil, on an oblong 4to page removed from an autograph album, n.p., 1929. On a holograph stave Honegger has, a little hurriedly, penned two bars of music which he identifies as being from his composition Pacific [231] (1923). Also signed to the verso by Paul Wegener (1874-1948, German Actor, with a sentiment in German in his hand, referring to South America and signed on board a liner, August 1929). Some light staining and minor age wear, about VG A scarce quotation from Honegger's most frequently performed work, Pacific 231, inspired by the sound of a steam locomotive and originally entitled Mouvement Symphonique. The composer was widely recognised as a train enthusiast, once remarking 'I have always loved locomotives passionately. For me they are living creatures and I love them as others love women or horses'.
HAHN REYNALDO: (1874-1947) Venezuelan-born French Composer & Conductor. A.M.Q.S., Reynaldo Hahn, two pages (manuscript paper), n.p., June 1910. The extensive quotation, possibly a working manuscript, is written in bold pencil and comprises two untitled compositions for piano, both in 6/8 time, the first comprising 28 bars of music in F Sharp Minor and the second, to the verso, comprising 18 bars of music in C Major. Signed by Hahn at the head of the recto in pencil and dated in his hand to the lower margin. Some light overall age wear, VG Hahn composed a number of works in 1910, the same year as the present quotation, including his Romanesque in C-Major, a piece of chamber music for flute, viola and piano which draws inspiration from an Italian folk dance.
LEHAR FRANZ: (1870-1948) Austrian Composer. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Lehar standing in a half length pose with his arms folded. Signed in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower border. Together with a bold, dark fountain pen ink signature ('F Lehar') and date, Vienna, 21st September 1928, in his hand on a page removed from an autograph album. Also including a pencil signature ('F. Lehar') on a piece (light overall staining, slightly affecting the signature) neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album. FR (1), VG, 3
ELGAR EDWARD: (1857-1934) English Composer. A.L.S., Edward Elgar, two pages, 8vo, Forli, Malvern, 4th March 1894, to Messrs. Novello & Co. ('Dear Sirs'). The composer writes to his music publishers and encloses a manuscript (no longer present) of a part-song which he trusts they will find acceptable for publication, remarking 'It is not so difficult as the other part-songs of mine which you publish: I think therefore it might help to bring those forward as the present one, on account of its greater simplicity may become more widely known than its predecessors'. With several ink and bold blue indelible pencil annotations in the hand of an employee of Novello & Co (one stating 'Offer £3.3.0'). VG The song to which Elgar refers to is O Happy Eyes (Op. 18, No.1) which Elgar had originally composed in late 1889, and later revised as illustrated by the present letter. The words were written by Elgar's future wife, Alice, in February 1888, before her engagement to the composer.
SEGOVIA ANDRES: (1893-1987) Spanish Guitarist. A printed 8vo programme for a performance by Segovia with the Halle Orchestra conducted by John Barbirolli at the Royal Festival Hall, London, 27th October 1953, signed by Segovia in blue ink to an inside page to the lower border beneath his image, dated 1953 in his hand, and also signed by John Barbirolli in blue ink with his name alone to his image to an inside page. [DU MAURIER DAPHNE]: (1907-1989) British Author. A curious autograph MS, in an unidentified hand, in pencil, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (1930s ?), marked Copy at the head and additionally annotated 'Copy of a letter from Father' at the foot. The manuscript relates to Du Maurier's writings and states, in part, 'I am disturbed over what I hear about Daphne's book. That imitative indecency is actually a throw back to bad breeding. I am going to ask that you stop it instantly if or whenever she starts that kind of thing in private talk. I think of my dear Cannan, a mans man if ever there was one and how when old Wardill offered once to lend me a dirty book he took me aside and said don't let him, promise - it isn't your sort of book and you wouldn't like it. I was over 40 at that time. Surely if a man can be so delicate for his friend. And the worst of that writing and the worst of that writing and talk is that even to read or listen coarsens the feelings not to mention good natural manners'. Some light overall foxing and age wear and some extensive, although neat, splits at the edges of the folds, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, about G The present document originates from the papers of Foy Quiller-Couch and is quite probably in her hand. The daughter of British writer Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), Foy Quiller-Couch was a life-long friend of Du Maurier. Of course, Du Maurier herself also had a famous father, Gerald Du Maurier (1873-1934) English Actor.
BUNKER CHANG & ENG: (1811-1874) Siamese conjoined twin brothers, whose condition and birthplace became the basis for the term Siamese Twins. An extremely rare vintage signed carte-de-visite photograph, the sepia albumen print by The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company depicting the twins standing in a three quarter length pose. (c.1872). NORGAY TENZING: (1914-1986) Nepalese Indian Sherpa Mountaineer, the first man, with Edmund Hillary, to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 1953. Book signed, a hardback edition of Tiger of the Snows, the autobiography of Tenzing of Everest, written in collaboration with James Ramsey Ullman, published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1955 (ninth impression). Signed ('Tenzing') in bold black ink by Tenzing Norgay with his name alone to the front free endpaper. Also signed to the half title page by five other members of the Everest Expedition of 1953 individually comprising Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) New Zealand Mountaineer, the first man, with Tenzing Norgay, to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 1953, Mike Westmacott (1925-2012) British Mountaineer, George Lowe (1924-2013) New Zealand-born Mountaineer, Charles Wylie (1919-2007) British Lieutenant-Colonel, Organising Secretary of the Expedition and George Band (1929-2011) English Mountaineer. CALDWELL KEITH: (1895-1980) New Zealand Fighter Ace (25 victories) of World War I who later served as an Air Commodore in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War II. Bold pencil signature ('K. L. Caldwell') on a slim oblong 8vo piece, evidently neatly clipped from a document and with the typed and printed rank of Major, Commanding 74 Squadron alongside and beneath the signature. One very small tear to the right edge, not affecting the signature, VG
[BISHOP BILLY]: (1894-1956) Canadian Fighter Ace (72 victories) of World War I. Victoria Cross winner for his aerial actions over France, 2nd June 1917. SCOTT ALAN JOHN LANCE (1883-1922) New Zealand-born Group Captain of World War I. D.S., Jack Scott, in pencil, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 4th May 1917. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report signed by Scott as an observer to the actions of Billy Bishop and his deputy flight leader William Mayes Frys, the narrative stating, in part, 'With Lieut. Fry following me I dived at two two-seaters. I fired 20 rounds at one and turned off, Lieut. Fry diving on it and firing. I dived again as he stopped firing and fired about 40 rounds....The machine did two turns of a spin and then nosedived to earth, where we saw him crash. I fired a short burst at long range at the second, which flew away and did not return (W. A. Bishop), 'I dived with Capt. Bishop and fired a long burst at close range at the same time as him....' (W. M. Fry). Major Scott, in his capacity as Officer Commanding No. 60 Squadron R.F.C., has added a brief statement at the foot, in full, '5 H[ostile] A[ircraft] were 1500 ft above Capt. Bishop and Lieut. Fry during all this time. They did not come down'. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and one to the upper edge, only slightly affecting one word of printed text, otherwise VG The present document relates to Bishop's 17th victory, shared with Fry. William Mayes Fry (1896-1992) British Fighter Ace (11 victories) of World War I. Scott has been described as a 'pugnacious dogfighter', although never became an excellent pilot. Indeed, in training he crashed and broke both legs. This did not prevent him, however, from being Winston Churchill's flying instructor whilst serving as Commandant of the Central Flying School in 1917-18. Scott died at the early age of 38.
PARK KEITH: (1892-1975) New Zealand Air Chief Marshal of World War II, recognised for his important role during the Battle of Britain. D.S., K R Park, Major, in bold pencil, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 10th June 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air), the narrative relating to an aerial victory by Flight Commander C. R. Steele and stating, in part, 'While on a 6 machine O.P. over Roye I led the formation down on 6 D.5's which tried to escape....Four of my machines singled out the same E[nemy] A[ircraft] putting into it about 1000 rounds in all, at an average range of 100 - 150 yards. The E. A. went down in a steep dive with smoke pouring from it which quickly changed to flames. When last seen the E.A. was diving through a cloud, still blazing'. Signed by Park at the conclusion in his capacity as Commander of 48 Squadron and additionally annotated in pencil in his hand above the narrative '1 Crash'. Two file holes to the left edge and a third to the upper left corner and with a neat tear to the lower edge of the page, none affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Park was a Fighter Ace of World War I and as a Major he Commanded 48 Squadron.
Montgomery's Allied Cease Fire Order WORLD WAR II: A rare World War II document issued under the orders of Field Marshal Montgomery, being the first Allied Cease Fire order in Germany, one page, 4to, n.p., 4th May 1945. The purple ink mimeographed document is an original field order marked GO 411A SECRET and was transmitted from Exfor Main at 20.50 hours on 4th May 1945 to be received by 'FIRST CDN ARMY: SECOND BRIT ARMY: L OF C: GHQ AA TPS: 79 ARMD DIV: EXFOR REAR…..' and reads, in full, 'all offensive ops will cease fire from receipt this signal. orders will be given to all tps to cease fire 0800 hrs tomorrow saturday 5 may. full terms of local german surrender arranged today for 21 ARMY GP follow. emphasise these provisions apply solely to 21 ARMY GP front and are for the moment excl of DUNKIRK. ack'. Signed in facsimile at the foot by Major General David Belchem with an instruction 'IN CIPHER if liable to interception'. This being the original document received by Captain Corner and annotated with his name in pencil to the upper right corner. An historically important document representing the first publication regarding the German surrender (the printed press not having had time to run their copy). A couple of very minor paperclip rust stains, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text, otherwise VG At 18.20 hours on 4th May 1945 German field commanders surrendered all hostile forces in North West Europe to Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Army Group at his Tactical HQ, then located on Luneburg Heath. Montgomery immediately ordered his Chief of Operations, Major General David Belchem, to issue a cease fire order to all subordinate units, the present document being an original surviving copy of this order. This signal was transmitted at 20.50 hours on the 4th May 1945 and is reproduced on the verso of the illustration of the Instrument of Surrender featured in Normandy to the Baltic by Montgomery (1946, pages 276-277). Charles Corner (1916-2006) British Army Captain, a Royal Signals Staff Officer assigned to Montgomery's Tactical HQ at Luneburg Heath. Corner was responsible for the transmission of all TAC signals traffic and was also one of 27 specially selected officers to be invited to a celebration dinner given by Montgomery in the Tactical 'B' Mess on 6th May 1945. Another copy of the field order, although without the interesting provenance of the present document, was sold by Bonhams in New York as part of their World War II 70th Anniversary auction in New York on 29th April 2015 (Lot 157, sold for $7500)

The purple ink mimeographed document is an original Signal Message (marked SECRET) sent from the Main Second Army at 00.30 hours on 5th May 1945 to be received by 'Main HQ 8 Corps, Main HQ 12 Corps, Main HQ 30 Corps, XVIII US Corps' and states, in full, 'Local German surrender signed by Comd in Chief 21 ARMY GP and German representative today (.) all offensive operations will be cancelled forthwith and all tps will be ordered to cease fire at 0800 hrs 5 May'. Signed in facsimile at the foot by a Lieutenant General, General Staff, and with an instruction 'If liable to be intercepted or to fall into enemy hands this message must be sent IN CIPHER'. With several pencil annotations to the upper edge. A document of significant importance relating to the end of World War II. A few small spots of foxing, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text, and with some light creasing, about VG Following receipt of the Cease Fire Order from 21 Army Group (see lot 375) the Second Army issued their own Cease Fire Order to all its subordinate commands, the present document being an original surviving copy of this signal. The text is quoted in full in An Account of the Operations of Second Army in Europe 1944-45 (Volume II, page 434). Provenance: the present document originates from the papers of Charles Corner (1916-2006) British Army Captain, a Royal Signals Staff Officer assigned to Montgomery's Tactical HQ at Luneburg Heath. Corner was responsible for the transmission of all TAC signals traffic and was also one of 27 specially selected officers to be invited to a celebration dinner given by Montgomery in the Tactical 'B' Mess on 6th May 1945. EISENHOWER DWIGHT D.: (1890-1969) American General of World War II, later American President 1953-61. A good vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of Eisenhower in uniform and seated in a half length pose at his desk, holding a pen in one hand as he signs a document and holding a cigarette in the other. Photograph by Bertram Park of London and signed by him in pencil to the lower photographer's mount. Signed by Eisenhower in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount with a good inscription, 'To Lieut General K. A. N. Anderson, who commanded the British First Army throughout the North African campaign to the date of its smashing victory in Tunisia. With deep appreciation and best wishes, Dwight D. Eisenhower'. An excellent association photograph. Some light age toning, scuffing and minor foxing to the photographer's mount, most likely caused by previous framing, and with a couple of small surface scratches to the image, otherwise about VG Kenneth A. N. Anderson (1891-1959) British General of World War II, remembered for his command of the First Army during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Eisenhower, perhaps in slight contrast to the sentiments expressed on the present photograph, wrote of Anderson that he was 'blunt, at times to the point of rudeness'.
[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. An original printed telegram (received copy) from Adolf Hitler, one page, 4to, Salzburg, 15th April 1943, to Bohme, in German. The partially printed document bears a message from the Fuhrer, stating, in full, 'On your birthday today I send you my best wishes'. With various received stamps and pencil annotations etc. A few minor tears to the edges, not affecting the text. About VG Franz Bohme (1885-1947) Austrian Military officer of World War II, Commander of the XVIII Mountain Corps and Hitler's 'Plenipotentiary Commanding General'
HERZNER HANS-ALBRECHT: (1907-1942) German Oberleutnant of World War II, the first man to engage in combat at the beginning of the war, one week before the official commencement of hostilities. Herzner was also the first recipient of a decoration for valour in World War II. Extremely rare, bold pencil signature ('Herzner') on a small oblong 12mo ticket, possibly removed from a larger document. The pale pink printed ticket bears the black printed numbers 5 and 281 along with several other light pencil numbers. One small file hole towards the left edge, not affecting the signature. VG On Friday, 25th August 1939 at 15.02 hours Adolf Hitler issued his order to attack Poland in what was known as Operation White. However four hours later he rescinded the order although it came too late to stop Herzner and his thirteen man special commando unit who had crossed the Slovakian-Polish border at 00.03 hours on 25th August, intent on preventing the destruction of the strategic Jablunka Pass Tunnel by the Polish Army. At 03.55 hours Herzner captured the railway station at Mosty, but failed to secure the tunnel as a result of stiff resistance. When radio communications (which had been lost) were re-established with Herzner's HQ, a few hours later, he and his unit were immediately withdrawn. One Pole had been killed, two Germans wounded and one taken prisoner. On the 1st September Hitler re-ordered the attack on Poland and, once again, Herzner captured Mosty. The tunnel was destroyed by the Polish Army. For his actions Herzner received the Iron Cross II Class.
ROMMEL ERWIN: (1891-1944) German Field Marshal of World War II. Wartime D.S., Rommel, in bold pencil, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., in German. The printed document is issued by Rommel in his capacity as Commanding Officer of the German Afrika Corps and commences by stating that he is no longer able to send personal replies to the messages of good wishes which he receives from Germany, continuing, in part, 'The daily army communique….gives you an account of what has been accomplished by the troops entrusted to me. These accomplishments are enormous. The tremendous heat by day, the cold by night, the eternal sand and dust, and not least the stern battles over a wide area, partly in difficult terrain, unceasingly impose the greatest demands on every soldier of the Afrika Corps. The special bulletins provide youwith confirmation that we are meeting the demands on us, and have the will to perform the tasks given to us by the Fuhrer, until the last enemy is killed….' GALLAND ADOLF: (1912-1996) German Fighter Pilot of World War II, Knight's Cross winner with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. A signed colour 23 x 18 print entitled Duel of Eagles by artist Robert Taylor, the image depicting Galland leading the JG26 Fighter Wing Me 109s on an early morning patrol over the Pas de Calais in 1941. Published by the Military Gallery, Bath, 1985. Signed by Galland in bold pencil with his name alone to the lower border and also signed by artist Robert Taylor in bold pencil with his name alone to the lower border. A.L.S., David, and again with his initial D at the conclusion of a postscript, two pages, 4to, Ottawa, 28th & 29th August 1919, to his mistress Freda Dudley Ward ('My very own darling beloved little Fredie Wedie'), on the printed stationery of Government House. Writing in pencil, the Prince of Wales informs his lover that he reached Ottawa 'after a pompous arrival & presentation of addresses' to find a letter from her waiting for him, continuing to refer to her recent trip to Scarborough and a meeting with Mrs. Shaughnessy, 'I know her so little but she's certainly a divine woman all I've seen of her & so sympathetic & I'm so glad we had those 2 little “parties a quatre” before Legh and I went away as it has established a great bond between him & me & makes such a difference!! He heard from Mrs. S. to-day….she wants him to go down….to see her this week end & I've told him to go tho I fear he won't!!....He does love that woman so madly!! He's almost as desparately & pathetically in love as your little boy is sweetheart tho' that isn't possible!!', further mentioning the sale of his car ('I'm cabling home to find out the exact price Barker gave me as I can't remember exactly, so typical of me….') and a party at a Country Club which he has just returned from and which he found better than others, 'not better on account of the women darling as they were as plain as usual but the dinner & supper were wet & then we danced out of doors on canvas stretched on a bowling green which made a good floor & it was nicely lit up!!', also commenting on a garden party which 'meant shaking hands with over 1000 people again. My poor right hand was so sore & bruised after Toronto but it's worse than ever now' and reflecting 'but I'm rather a wreck altogether angel as besides being worked to death physically I'm always worrying my head off about everything & have become the completist pack of nerves & live on them entirely!! It's all such a strain & it's very wearing having to pull oneself together & face & address huge crowds several times a day besides the many set speeches I have to produce'. The Prince concludes his letter in French 'Bonne nuit et au revoir Fredie petite amour Cherie; tou petit David, t'aime et t'adore le plus en plus' and also writes in a postscript 'this long separation is absolutely cruelty to a child!!....Blesss you, bless you & God keep you safe. Take the very greatest care of your sweet precious darling little self tho. I trust Mr. Thpider, who sends his love to Mrs. Thpider….Forgot to tell you that I heard from Bertie [his brother, the future King George VI] last mail & he gave me news of you!' English Socialite, the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales from 1918-23. Ward remained a close confidante of Edward's until 1934 when his relationship with Wallis Simpson began.

Dated 1945 in pencil to the upper right corner in an unidentified hand. A few light creases and minor spots of foxing. Together with Mary of Teck (1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom 1910-36, wife of King George V and mother of King George VI. Autograph Envelope, unsigned, addressed in her hand to Sir Douglas Dawson at the Lord Chamberlain's Office at St. James' Palace. T.L.S., Clementine S. Churchill, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 8vo, Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 8th July 1948, to Mrs. [John] Rodgers. Churchill states that it would give her and her husband much pleasure if her correspondent and her husband could lunch with them on 2nd August, explaining ‘Colonel and Mrs. Ponsonby are coming, and afterwards we are going on to the Edenbridge Show, which I expect you may also be attending?’. Together with a second T.L.S., Clementine S. Churchill, one page, 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, London, 20th January 1965, to Sir John Rodgers, thanking him for his letter and remarking ‘I warmly appreciate your thoughts and sympathy at this time’ also including an original Post Office telegram (received copy) from Winston Churchill, one page, oblong 8vo, Knightsbridge, 4th December 1964, to Sir John Rodgers at the House of Commons, thanking him for his good wishes which he reciprocates (some tears and small areas of paper loss) and further including a small series of T.Ls.S. and one A.L.S. by various individuals related to, or associated with, Winston Churchill, all to John Rodgers, comprising Anthony Montague Browne (in full, ‘Sir Winston Churchill has asked me to thank you very much for your letter of October 24, and the account of your interview with General Chiang Kai-shek. Sir Winston found this most interesting. You have no doubt considered passing this information to the Foreign Office, who would certainly be interested?’, 25th October 1963), Christopher Soames, Mary Soames (a good A.L.S. referring to her mother and father and commenting ‘Eastern phobias always lead to such tiresome interior decoration & bric-a-brac!’, 24th August n.y.), Duncan Sandys and Brendan Bracken. Also including a good unsigned vintage 10 x 12 photograph of Winston Churchill standing in a half length pose in a doorway making a victorious salute with one hand and holding a cigar in the other. WILHELM II: (1859-1941) German Emperor & King of Prussia 1888- 1918. D.S., Wilhelm, in indelible pencil, one page, small 4to, Palace of Doorn, 27th January n.y., in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a telegram and states, in full, 'Warm thanks for the kind thoughts on my birthday. Best wishes from myself, and from Her Majesty the Empress'. Neatly trimmed at the base and with two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Together with an A.L.S. by Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1865-1946), on one side of a correspondence card, Schloss Ebersdorf, 2nd September 1936, to a gentleman, in French, and also including a vintage signed sepia postcard photograph by Princess Helmtrud of Bavaria (1886-1977), the image depicting her seated in a three quarter length pose.
