Lot 271

2002 Rover 75 Connoisseur SE Transmission: manualMileage:89600The Rover 75 was manufactured by Rover Group and later by MG Rover. The Rover 75 was available with front wheel drive in either a saloon or estate body style and latterly, in long wheelbase form and a rear wheel drive, V8 engined specification. Rover 75’s were built at Cowley, Oxfordshire, for just a year when the owners at the time, BMW, divested its interests in Rover and the 75 was built by the new MG Rover Group at their Longbridge site in Birmingham. Production of the Rover and later MG badged models ceased on 8th April 2005 when manufacturer MG Rover Group entered administration. This 2.5 litre V6 Rover 75 Connoisseur SE is presented in gleaming red coachwork with contrasting black trim and is described by our vendor as being in fabulous condition inside and out and an absolute joy to own. The car has had just three former keepers and has been with the current owner since 2006. It boasts a full service history, the last in September 2020, and having only covered circa 4,500 miles a year has been very well maintained and used regularly. A very well specified top of the range Connoisseur SE example supplied with the original handbooks together with a UK V5C registration document and a tow bar, this is a car that can be great fun to use or to keep as a potential future classic.Guide Price £4,000 - £6,000Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

THE EX-WORKS, SAMUELSON/KINDELL, LE MANS 24 HOURS1924 MG M-Type Midget 'Double Twelve' Le Mans SportsRegistration no. RX 6796Chassis no. 2M1 647*One of two examples built for the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours race*Maintained by Blue Diamond*Eligible for the Le Mans Classic*5th in class at the 1930 Spa 24 HoursFootnotes:This car is one of two specially built by MG at Abingdon for the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours race. Based on the 'Double Twelve' M-Type Midget, it is reputed to be the earliest 'works' racing MG in existence and is featured in most books on the marque. With the introduction of the M-Type Midget at the 1928 Olympia Motor Show, Cecil Kimber had single-handedly created the market for small, cheap sports cars. Selling for £175, Kimber's new baby was based on the contemporary Morris Minor and featured pretty, boat-tailed, fabric coachwork by Carbodies. The 847cc, overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder engine derived from Wolseley aero engine experience via the Wolseley Ten, and mated to this little gem of a power unit was a three-speed 'crash' gearbox. Produced initially at Cowley, the Midget proved to be a strong seller and production transferred to Abingdon when the MG factory moved there in the autumn of 1929. M-Types were awarded the Team Prize in the 1930 'Double Twelve' 24-hour race at Brooklands, and this success provided a welcome boost to sales, which amounted to 3,253 cars by the time production ceased in 1933. Capitalising on its Brooklands success, MG produced 30 Double Twelve Replicas, which featured many of the modifications made to the team cars including altered bodywork and deeper door cutaways, while the racer's different valve timing found its way onto the production M-Type for 1931. The Le Mans cars differed from the standard M-Types and 'Double Twelve' Replicas in having more powerful engines; long range fuel and oil tanks; reinforced wheels with extra spokes; an upswept scuttle; extra instrumentation; a pressurised fuel tank; a unique under-body exhaust system incorporating a Brooklands silencer; and an externally mounted spare wheel, many of these modifications made to meet the Le Mans regulations.'RX 6796' was driven at Le Mans by Sir Francis Samuelson and Fred Kindell (an MG employee) but retired after a fractured oil pipe led to damaged bearings. The second car driven by Murton-Neale and Jack Hicks also retired. Undeterred, Samuelson obtained an entry for the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race to be held a fortnight later and set off for Abingdon in his Talbot, taking the MG's engine with him. Back in France the rebuilt motor was soon reinstalled and the MG was then 'run in' by being driven north to Belgium. 'RX 6796' was the only British entry at Spa and finished 5th in class, hampered by severe clutch slip. This car is believed to have had continuing competition usage during the 1930s but the details are not known. It is reputed to have been supercharged at one time and it is likely that the car's hydraulic brakes and J2 four-speed gearbox were fitted during this period. The Midget was purchased by the previous owner's father-in-law, Lewin Spittle, in Newmarket in 1943 for £17 10s (£17.50) with three gallons of 'unobtainable' petrol in the (enlarged) Le Mans tank. He wrote: 'It looked somehow different and had the largest SU I had seen on an engine of that size together with a fishtail exhaust which would not have disgraced a Bentley.' As the little MG would not accommodate his growing family, Spittle sold it in 1948 to an undergraduate who took it to Spain. He saw the car again in Piccadilly in 1950 and by the mid-1960s had traced it to Oxford where it was owned by Dr Stuart Milton, who was very well known in MG circles and owned the ex-Nuvolari K3. Spittle and Milton agreed jointly to restore the car to original Le Mans specification, where necessary using parts from the second Le Mans car of Murton-Neale, the remains of which Milton also owned. Milton died in 1971 before the rebuild was completed. During the restoration, drawings of the Le Mans body were obtained from Abingdon and an accurate replica made, but the rest of the car including the engine (with the exception of the carburettor, which is of the correct downdraft configuration but of a different model) is believed to be original. The MG was the subject of a feature by Bill Boddy in the June 1976 issue of Motor Sport. 'RX 6796' remained in single family ownership for almost 50 years and saw limited use in this time. The engine was rebuilt, it being noted that the special cylinder head had the copper plating which was typical of MG racing practice of the period. The Midget has appeared regularly at special MG occasions, most recently at the demonstration of significant MG competition cars at the 1999 Goodwood Revival meeting, and was invited to attend the 2014 'MG90' celebrations at Silverstone. Offered with V5 registration document, the sporting MG is now offered from a prominent collector of special interest collector cars and has been looked after by John Lomas of Blue Diamond Riley Services Ltd while retained at Bicester Heritage. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a unique and historically significant part of the MG legend. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

TD23207Odometer reading: 607 since restorationMOT: Exempt*Restored example*Covered just 600 miles since restoration*Recommissioned circa 2015Footnotes:The MG TD was introduced in 1950 and featured multiple upgrades over its TC predecessor including a newer chassis from the Y-Type, independent front suspension, a hypoid-geared rear axle, hypoid-differential, and a new transmission. The additions were said to completely transform the driving experience of the car compared to its TC predecessor, therefore moving the car forward significantly. This 1952 TD is a restored example that is presented in a beautiful cream colour scheme with a green leather interior. Prior to 2015 there is little history of the car, however it is noted that the car was recommissioned and re-registered that same year. Overall the car is in a very good condition and the paintwork, bodywork and interior all present very well. The car went new to the USA, where it was converted to right-hand drive in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during 1994, shortly before being exported to the UK (which is where Wales comes in) and being registered for British roads in 1997. By 2004 though, it had been exported to Queensland in Australia, but looks to have returned to its homeland by the end of that year, landing in Liverpool. The paperwork folder includes the current V5, some US history such as registration documents and invoices, a few bits of Australian paperwork, various MoTs back to 1998, a couple of tax discs from 2001 and 2008, and some British invoices. The vendor reports the car as 'driving well, mechanically good with working overdrive and with bodywork that seems solid with no visible rot, but the paintwork is not so good'. Having examined the car here at ACA, the paint does seem to have 'reacted' over the years, resulting in a less-than-smooth finish. Some tarnishing is evident on the bumpers and the offside front wheel has a loose spoke. The vendor describes the interior as good. The odometer reading is 10,536, which we assume to be 110,536 judging by the history file. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 24TH AUGUST BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1962 Riley 1.5 Make: Riley Model: 1.5Year: 1962Mileage: 72182VIN: RH522357Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: UDO617Transmission: manualThe Riley 1.5 - or One-Point-Five, as BMC insisted on calling it - was a clever re-invention of the Morris Minor, using its floorpan, suspension and steering, but utilising the larger 1489cc B-Series engine and gearbox as found in the MG Magnette. It shared its styling with the Wolseley 1500, but twin carburettors gave the Riley almost 20bhp more than its luxury sibling, endowing it with 68bhp. This example, in black with nice pale grey leather interior (and nicknamed Lanc, in reference to its numberplate and 'The Dambusters' 617 Squadron), was purchased by the vendor in 2007 and completely rebuilt. All the invoices and receipts for this are included in the history folder, and there are also many more bills since then; in total, they add up to many thousands and are handily itemised across several sheets of paper. Also present are the current and past V5s, a workshop manual, assorted past lists, MoTs back to 1997 and a spare key. The vendor advises us that there is a problem with the ignition switch, but the car does start and run, and the clutch/brake fluid is low and will need bleeding.

1978 MG B GTMake: MG Model: B GTYear: 1978Mileage: 41814VIN: GHD5449780GConfiguration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: YNH981STransmission: manualAlthough off-road and barn-stored for 18 years, the vendor has nicely recommissioned this maroon MGB GT with many new parts. While no welding was required - in fact, the vendor believes the 41,814-mile vehicle has never been welded during its life - the fresh bits include: ignition components, electric fuel pump, front brake calipers, hoses and pads, rear wheel cylinders, clutch slave cylinder, tyres, fuel tank, rear brake shoes, oil cooler, wheel trims, seat covers, headlamps, radiator, door mirror, petrol tank, alloy wheel nuts, Sony CD player and more besides. A service was carried out in June 2020 at 41,608 miles, while the MoT is valid until September 2021. The history folder includes the V5 (noting seven former keepers), a generic service book, handwritten list of new parts, and the MoT certificate.
