An exceptional Bokhara silk brocade chapan, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century. With original Russian or French printed cotton lining and fine wide waxed silk ikat interior edging and original exterior embroidered edging. Both the quality and condition of this coat, with its lime green silk brocade embellished with pale blue silk embroidery, are remarkable. See Mackie and Thompson, Turkmen, figs. 50-1 for a photograph of a Bokharan silk worker taken in 1872 and another taken in about 1909 of a Bokharan dignitary wearing a similarly lavish chapan to the present example with almost identical silk embroidered exterior edging.

Four porcelain monkeys, 19th century in Meissen style modelled after J J Kandler as male monkeys in brightly coloured clothes, playing musical instruments and supported by a tree stump each raised on a shaped circular scroll moulded and gilt highlighted base, comprising: a guitarist in plumed black hat and pink jacket with white neck ruff, crossed swords and incised 16, damage and restoration, 6" high, an organist in powdered wig and red frock coat seated astride another monkey supporting the organ on its back and supported by a central tree stump, crossed swords and indistinctly numbered, damage and restoration, 5" high, a triangle player wearing black tricorn hat, blue frock coat and pink striped breeches, incised No.19, damage and restoration, 4.75" high and another with crossed arms and modelled leaning to one side wearing a powdered wig, pink frock coat and purple breaches, incised 11, damage and restoration, 5.5" high (4)
Italian School, 16th century The Coat-of-Arms of the Piccolomini family oil on panel, oval 44.5 by 45.5 cm.; 17.5 by 18 in. The coat-of-arms to the right are those of the Piccolomini family of Rome, but those on the left have not so far been identified. The Imperial Eagle above the arms identifies both families as being Guelph supporters.
