D[awson]. for Iohn Iaggard, 1st ed., 1622, printed woodcut device to title, woodcut initial to each section, initial blank present, damp staining to lower margins throughout affecting last five lines of text to each page, some purpling and scattered damp fraying to blank areas of lower margins of final leaves not affecting text, bound in at the rear of vol. 2 of Hakluyt (Richard), The Second [and Third & Last] Volume of the Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation... , vols. 2 & 3 (of 3), 1st eds., 1599-1600, vol. 2 paginated in two parts (and Hawkins bound in at rear), both vols. heavily damp stained throughout affecting generally up to one-third of each leaf, some damp fraying occ. affecting letter-press, leaves D6 to E3 of vol. 3 still partly adhered from damp, old closed tear paper repair to foremargin of Y3 to vol. 2 and a few minor worm holes touching running heads of final half of vol. 3, contemp. calf gilt, spines with five raised bands, leather labels and gilt-dec. compartments, both boards with gilt coat of arms of Robert Glascock [emigrated to Ireland before 1614; second surviving son of Richard Glascock of Down Hall, Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex], featuring three cocks and a crescent on the chevron, the crest a cock with outspread wings and ermine spots standing on a grassy mount, lower one-third to one half of each board damp stained, joints cracked near foot with some loss to lower compartments of spines, folio (285 x 185mm). The rare first edition of the work by Sir Richard Hawkins is unusually complete with initial blank leaf and bound in a more contemporary binding than recent copies offered at auction. Though damp stained the purpling and fraying is confined to the blank areas of the lower margins which are larger than often found. STC 12962; Sabin 30957. Collation: [*]4, A-Y4. Certificacion de Armas issued in favour of Don Gregorio Antonio Casanas, Luis, Albarez y Perera, of Puerto de la Cruz de la Orotaba, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, dated Madrid, 6 November 1786, thirty-eight vellum leaves, 302 x 202mm, with manuscript text in brown ink throughout, titles and first lines in red and occn. gold, framed with two triple fillets in red, signed by the Cronista Juan Felix de Rujula, and other officials at end, with three mounted stamps or seals, full-page coat of arms in gold and colours, and allegorical title in gold and colours, featuring a horse, lion, cherubs and symbolic figures, surrounding a central circular inkstamp of King Charles III, ten illuminated initials in gold and colours, featuring castles and buildings, etc., four half-page coats of arms, and four decorative cartouches in gold and colours, the first two full page illuminations with old silk guards, contemp. gilt-dec. Spanish red full morocco, rubbed and some marks, scuffed to spine and outer edges, folio. (1)
An Early 20th Century Side Drum to the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, the brass shell stamped with maker`s name Henry Potter & Co., 36 West Street, Charing Cross Road, London, and numbered 4, the fascia painted with the Royal Coat of Arms and regimental battle honours, the wood frame painted in red, black and white, pierced to take the ten tension ropes each with a white leather tug, 38cm diameter, together with a label inscribed "Side drum No.4 carried by Cpl J Wright, B Coy from April 1918 until the end of the campaign", with a pair of drum sticks; a Pipe Banner to the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, in blue taffeta, with appliqued and embroidered regimental Coat of Arms in gold and silver bullion thread and coloured threads, with fringe border. A Victorian 1887 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer`s Sword by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, the 88.5cm single edge fullered steel blade etched with royal cypher, scrolling foliage, Prince of Wales plumes, Royal Coat of Arms and original owner`s family crest, the edge stamped 36724, the steel hilt pierced and engraved with scrolls, wire bound fish skin grip with bullion thread sword knot and steel scabbard.
A Royal Navy Midshipman`s Dirk, the 46cm single edge steel blade etched with Royal Coat of Arms, fouled anchor with King`s crown, acorns and oak leaves, the gilt brass hilt with acorn quillons to the recurving crossguard, wire bound fish skin grip and lion head pommel with blue and gold bullion thread sword knot, the black leather scabbard with brass mounts engraved with the initials C.F., together with black American cloth rain slip and a note saying "Dirk belonging to Cdr.C.Fox of HMS Hartland, sunk off North Africa, Second World War."
A Victorian 1895 Pattern Infantry Officer`s Sword, the 83.5cm single edge fullered steel blade etched with royal cypher, foliate scrolls and coat of arms, by R W Anderson & Sons, York, the nickel plated hilt engraved to W J Hartley, York, with wire bound fish skin grip, white leather sword knot and steel two ring scabbard. **W J Hartley was a Major with the Yorkshire Regiment.

CANNING GEORGE: (1770-1827) British Prime Minister April-August 1827. D.S., George Canning (a fine, bold ink signature), one page, folio, London, 18th April 1827 (just six days after Canning became Prime Minister). The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, in French, is a passport issued to George Ward, an Englishman, travelling to Malta via France and Italy. With an engraved coat of arms at the base alongside Canning`s signature. Some light folds, in remarkably fine condition, not usually encountered with passports. VG. Autographs of Canning as Prime Minister are rare following his short time in office.
DISRAELI BENJAMIN: (1804-1881) British Prime Minister 1868, 1874-80. Free Front envelope panel signed, Beaconsfield, addressed in his hand to Thomas Thorneycroft at Wolverhampton. The black bordered mourning envelope bears a London postal cancellation, 11th September (year not visible). With a small circular coat of arms affixed at the head. Neatly mounted and with some very light, minor discoloration. G
Tradescant (John) Musaeum Tradescantianum; or a C coat of arms frontispiece 2 portraits by Hollar obscure inscription dated 1657 on frontis verso Narcissus Luttrell`s copy with his cypher stamped on title verso date 1696 added in manuscript bookplate of Joshua Smith Stoke Park who may well have had the book bound bought at Lawson in 1980 (invoice inserted) early 19th century straight-grain red morocco g.e. a little rubbed 8vo [Wing 2005] 1656 ***Agrees with the Macclesfield copy (lot 2009) in having 24pp. prelims (A8 a4) rather than the 28pp. called for by ESTC which probably includes an alleged inital blank and the frontispiece.
