Bristol - Leigh Court Somersetshire - by T. S. Butterworth ‘The Magnificent Seat of Philip John Miles Esq.’ Coloured Lithograph published by Day & Haghe, Litho’s to the Queen, mounted framed and glazed, 30cm x 25cm.Leigh Court - The original Leigh Court was an Elizabethan mansion built by Sir George Norton of Bristol in 1558, after the estate of some 2,500 acres (10 km2) was sold to Philip John Miles (1773-1845) in 1811, he demolished the original building around 1812 and in 1814 rebuilt the seat a quarter of a mile further north-east, to designs by Thomas Hopper ,that were based on plans which Hopper had previously drawn for Pytminster House , Wiltshire. Philip Miles died in 1845, leaving Leigh Court to his eldest son, William Miles , for whom the Miles Baronetcy of was created in 1859. In 1884 the second Baronet, Sir Philip Miles , entertained the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII . Externally the architectural style of Leigh Court is Palladian , the south-east and north-west elevations are identical, with the central three bays slightly advanced with a detached portico of four, unfluted Ionic columns, with plain entablature and pediments. The north-east elevation is of seven bays with the central bays recessed behind four Ionic columns. To the south-west are attached nine-bay service wings of two storeys. The impressive, largely intact interior is Greek Reviva . The square entrance hall has a central ring of eight marble Ionic columns which support a saucer dome. In addition it contains decorative anthemion friezes and a stone and marble patterned floor. The mansion housed a collection of over a hundred paintings representing many Old Masters -Domenichino (including the St John the Evangelist sold in 2009 for £9.2 million),Titian , Poussin , Michelangelo ,Raphael ,Rubens ,Claude Lorrain (including the Altieri Claudes ) andVan Dyke ,as well as numerous family portraits, however the majority of the more famous paintings were sold between 1884 and 1898. It was possible to visit the house to view the art collection on Thursday afternoons upon application to the Miles family's business offices at 61Queen Square, Bristol (formerly the house of Philip John Miles's father, William Miles). The Great Hall which has a double staircase still contains an original pipe organ built by Flight and Robson of London. In addition to being played manually, it could originally be set to play the overture and a duet (Ah, Perdona) from Mozart ’s Clemenza di Tito .The grounds were originally landscaped by Humphrey Repton .At the turn of the 19th century a 2-acre (8,100 m2) walled garden was built to provide food for the estate. The Miles family continued to occupy the house until 1917.

Lot 1325

CIRCLE OF SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (FLEMISH 1577 - 1640), THE LION HUNT ink and grey wash on blued paper 31cm x 39cm Framed Framer's label verso: T. W. Earl, 11, Marlborough St., Devonport Provenance:- Ex collection Ardgowan House Note:- This drawing clearly dates from the time of Rubens, early 17th. century, and blued paper was in vogue for drawings at this date. There are elements in it which are similar to the drawing of the same subject, by Rubens, in the collection of the National Gallery. However, in the latter, the spearsman to the left is facing the other way, and there is no palm tree. This is not a copy of any known image of the subject. It is just possible that this is a preliminary study, by Rubens, for the large oil of this subject by him, now in the Alte Pinakethek in Munich.

Lot 223C

Spain, 19th century CE. A hollow-cast silver statue of a dynamically posed Madonna wearing a crown and standing atop a cloud-shrouded crescent moon. This is atop a specially-carved, multi-tiered wooden pedestal. She stands with her hands together, her head slightly turned, wrapped in swirling robes; her face is naturalistic and her foot is visible just below the robes. Size: 3.3" W x 9.1" H (8.4 cm x 23.1 cm)This particular depiction of the Virgin Mary is sometimes known as the Woman of the Apocalypse and is recognized in many time periods and cultures, especially as part of the Catholic tradition of Marian veneration. It comes from Chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation, which describes,"a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars" (12:1). That this description describes Mary has been confirmed by multiple saints, Christian authors, and modern popes, and she is also known as the Virgin of the Apocalypse. Our Lady of Guadalupe is often depicted in this manner, with the crescent moon upturned beneath her feet; Rubens' baroque altarpiece painting, Mondsichelmadonna (Madonna on the Crescent Moon), is an example of this iconography from Freising Cathedral in Germany. This powerful symbolism has obviously spoken to many religious people throughout time. Provenance: Ex-private East Coast USA collection Condition: Slight areas of tarnish on figure; base has some scratching and signs of wear. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. John Hancock Junior (1804-1839) was the final member to continue the family tradition and worked at Derby between 1823 and 1836. He was primarily known for his works as a floral, fruit and ornithological painter. The Deposition is a rare example, not only due to the unusual subject matter but also because of the signature inscription verso. This inscribed panel depicts a carefully considered and recomposed illustration of the original painting 'The Descent from the Cross' by Peter Paul Rubens (Antwerp c.1612-1614). The artist has - while maintaining the Old Master technique and use of rich, striking pigment tones - adapted each figure, dressing them in costumes contemporary to the period of execution.
