The hilt with shagreen grip retaining twist wire binding. Housed in polished brown leather field service scabbard and knot. Minor age wear GC.
'An History of Birmingham', by W. Hutton. Printed in Birmingham by Pearson and Rollason, 1781. Original Georgian quarter leather binding with marbled boards, 8vo. Laid/chain-lined paper throughout. Engraved frontispiece depicting the 'Free School', plus a further 15 engraved plates (including a fold-out plan of Birmingham 'Survey'd by Thos Hanson', a fold-out plan of the 'Navigable Canal from Birmingham to Autherley', and depictions of hotels, churches, the workhouse). The book includes a list of subscribers. Origins of street names discussed, as well as trades (buttons, buckles, guns, leather, brass, hackney coaches), notable people. An interesting 18th-century English book.Condition Report: Contents generally sound with some discolouration and foxing; plan of Birmingham is splitting along fold-lines with marks from old tape; p.215 has a tear. Rebacked to style, incorporating original oxblood morocco title label.
