Lot 345

δ Hitler.- Nazi Germany.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy" "Hitler in Fatherland", pen and ink cartoon, pencil caption beneath, showing Hitler dressed as Alice with extra long arms and neck, while eating a giant biscuit that is inscribed 'Prussian Diet', with quote from Alice in Wonderland in the upper right that reads: '"Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice; "now I'm opening out like the largest telescope that ever was!"', signed, 355 x 290 mm., 1932.⁂ Despite losing the Presidential election in March 1932 to Paul von Hindenburg, Hitler's NSDAP won 37.3% of the popular vote in the federal election of July 1932 (an upswing by 19 percentage points), becoming the largest party in the Reichstag. Despite his re-election Hindenburg failed to prevent the Nazis from assuming power, and he reluctantly appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Lot 349

δ Churchill.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy". [Winston Ajax], pen and ink cartoon with some blue pencil shading, Winston as a classical warrior not only defies lightning bolts but ties them in knots, signed, 149 x 168mm., [c.1933].⁂ Dating to Churchill's wilderness years, this cartoon exemplifies his warrior spirit and the esteem in which he was still held within political circles.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Lot 352

δ Hitler.- Reichstag fire.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy" "Hints to Incendiaries", pen and ink cartoon with some blue pencil shading, pencil caption beneath, showing a burning pile of rubble inscribed 'Reichstag', with a ball of flames above with the face of Hitler and the swirling text 'Retaliation' which has burnt the coat tails of a man who runs from the scene and who is inscribed with the text 'German Red', signed, 387 x 294 mm., [1933].⁂ The Reichstag fire was an arson attack on the Reichstag building in Berlin on 27 February 1933, one month after Adolf Hitler had been sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. The National Socialist party stated that Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch council communist, was found near the building and who later claimed to have acted alone. The term "Reichstag fire" has come to refer to false flag actions perpetrated or facilitated by an authority to promote their own interests through popular approval of retribution or retraction of civil rights.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Lot 354

δ Hitler.- Nazi Germany.- Fearon (Percy Hutton) "Poy" "Fun at the German "Hendon." In March 1933, the Enabling Act, an amendment to the Weimar Constitution, passed in the Reichstag and allowed Hitler and his cabinet to pass laws-even laws that violated the constitution-without the consent of the president or the Reichstag. The Nazis used the provisions of the Reichstag Fire Decree to keep several Social Democratic deputies from attending, and the Communists had already been banned.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
