A Victorian hallmarked silver pot with repoussé, floral and foliate decoration, William Hutton & Sons, London 1893, diameter 8cm and a 925 stamped silver hexagonal scent bottle, approx combined 2.5ozt (2). CONDITION REPORT Surface wear and scratching commensurate with age to both. Pot has areas of tarnish to rim particularly. Hallmarks slightly rubbed. One or two tiny dents to base. Bottle tarnished slightly, especially neck and stopper.

Charles Lyell popularised the doctrine of uniformitarianism, first suggested by James Hutton, which presumes that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now, have always operated in the past and apply everywhere in the universe. The central argument in Principles, and one that had a notable influence on the young Charles Darwin, was that 'the present is the key to the past' and that geological remains from a distant past can be explained by reference to observable geological processes now in operation.
