1st-2nd century AD. A bronze sceptre finial formed as a bronze tube with iron core and ox-head detailing; band of four curved hooks to the rear flanked by beading, plain crescent panels flanking transverse ribbed panel, beaded collar, narrow waisted muzzle, flange ears with pellets, socket eyes, opposed crescent horns. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme report number NCL-51AB07. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme annual report of 2006, p.40-41. 58 grams, 50mm (2"). Found near Hutton-Sessay, North Yorkshire, UK, 2006; accompanied by a copy of a Portable Antiquities Scheme report number NCL-51AB07 which includes four museum drawings of the object, a letter discussing the object from Sally Worrell of the British Museum, and a copy of the relevant pages from the PAS Annual Report 2006. The exact purpose of the item is uncertain but parallels have been drawn with a possible knife-handle from Birdlip, Gloucestershire, of Iron Age date. The prominent hooks to the rear of the piece exclude its use as a handle, and the ornate character of the casting suggests an object of some importance with considerable display value. The terminal of a sceptre or similar item denoting rank and authority is a reasonable inference, as noted in the PAS Annual Report for 2006 where this item was published. Fine condition. Excessively rare.

A pair of 1943 Pattern 'Escape' boots these boots were based on the designs of Major Clayton Hutton at MI9. Consisting of a black leather laced walking shoe and a black zip-up suede legging, the basic principle was simple: in the event of landing in enemy territory, the wearer would separate the leggings from the shoe by using the folded pocket knife that was held in the pocket in the right boot. It was believed that the walking shoe would be less conspicuous and more comfortable than a conventional flying boot for an attempted evasion. The design remained in service with the RAF until the mid-1950s CONDITION REPORT: Back of heel to tip of toe approximately 30cm 11.5cm at widest point

JOHN HUTTON (1906-1978) FOR WHITEFRIARS GLASSRARE 'COVENTRY CATHEDRAL' ETCHED GLASS VASE, CIRCA 1962 engraved with angels playing trumpets, signed to the body JOHN HUTTON, engraved to base No. 13-79-8143cm highNote: This vase formed part of a very limited series engraved by John Hutton and is engraved with a unique arrangement of the angels and figures he had designed and engraved for the Great West Screen of the new Coventry Cathedral. The vases were engraved at the Cathedral shop for 100 guineas, a sum which reflected both the supreme quality of the glass used in the manufacture of the vessel and the hard work of Hutton It was hoped that the sale of the vases would help with the financial deficit on its completion. One of the vases and some of Hutton's designs for the Great West Screen are in the collection of the Sarjeant Art Gallery in Wanganui, New Zealand, where Hutton spent much of his youth and another in the collection of Princess Margaret.Hutton wrote to Captain N.T. Thurston of the Coventry Cathedral Reconstruction Committee in 1960 about the making and marketing of the vases and commented "The vases only have angels engraved on them. Under the present scheme I am to engrave all the flying angels of the screen in groups of two to each vase. Each grouping will be different so that although say Angel A appears many times on different vases it is never with the same angel. There are some 326 possible different groupings on this principle so I don't suppose I shall work through them all before I leave this world. It means that each buyer has an exclusive object. The glass is the finest British crystal specially blown by the Whitefriars Company. It represents in size about the limit of possibility in blowing for vases."
