THOMAS DANIELL R.A (BRITISH 1749-1840) THE SHORE TEMPLE, MAHABALIPURAM Oil on mahogany panel Inscribed 'A Hindoo Temple at Mauveleporam - on the Coast of Coromandel in East Indies' (to inscription on the verso) 38 x 54cm (14¾ x 21¼ in.)Literature: Maurice Shellim, India and the Daniells, London, Inchcape & Co, 1979, p. 49, as TD 30, reproducedExhibited: London, Eyre & Hobhouse Ltd, Twelve Oil paintings by Thomas Daniell, R.A. (1794-1840), 17th November - 4th December,1981. No.10 As a panel-painting virtually unique in his reordered work, the present lot was almost certainly painted in 1793 while the artist was at Madras. William Daniell published an engraving of the Shore Temple clearly taken from the same subject in Oriental Annual of 1834. The accompanying text mentions that the temple 'is of compact and beautiful stone-work, and stands upon a rock jutting from the land into the sea, it is a remnant, such at least in the oral tradition of the place, of an ancient city, which has been overthrown by the constantly encroaching waters, and of which this structure alone remains entire'. Provenance: Private collection, since circa 1960 Condition Report: UV light reveals a few retouches on the right of the temple, one of which is of about 4 cm wide, and visible retouching on the borders, especially on the right one. Always on the borders are present some small spots of paint loss, caused by the abrasion with the frame. There also might be some paint strengthening on the horizon and on the pole on the right; it is difficult though to value if such areas have bene retouched or simply the paint has thinned, creating a more visible contrast. APPLE COMPUTERS - An Apple IIc Prototype computer with associated monitor, transformer, and manuals c. 1983, marked Prototype U.K. serial number P1463 with Apple inspection stamp and another sticker marked U.K.The unit lacks many of the hallmarks of a final production unit: the case is smooth, rather than textured, and has different venting patterns on the top and bottom; the Apple logo and IIc logos are missing; buttons and indicators above the keyboard are not identified; no production or model numbers are cast into the bottom of the case, etc...These characteristics make it an especially interesting Apple IIc, indicating that it predates the production molds for the plastic bottom and back. Complete with its original power adapter and three original Apple manuals: "Apple Presents the Apple IIc: An Interactive Owner's Guide," "System Utilities," and "Introducing the Apple IIc" marked 'Sample not for resale no commercial value'. The Apple IIc, released in April 1984, was Apple Computer’s first endeavour to produce a portable computer—it was essentially a complete Apple II squeezed into a smaller housing, and the 'c' stood for 'compact.' Provenance - This item came from the home of an Apple employee who worked through the 80's and 90's as a software trainer.
