Grand triptyque présentant des poissons fossiles Large Triptych Fossil Fish MuralDiplomystus dentatus, Knightia eocaena, Priscacara serrata, Mioplosus labracoides Lower Eocene (48 Ma)Green River Formation, Wyoming, USAThe Green River Formation, in Utah and Wyoming, is one of the most important fossil sites for understanding the Eocene epoch that began about 55 million years ago. Today it is one of the most abundant and well-preserved sources of freshwater fossils in the world, producing some 19 genera of fish. The present offering was quarried from a rare, dark limestone exclusive to the particular private quarry from which this specimen originates. This dark limestone, found at the bottom of the '18-inch layer' (part of the capping layers), is a harder and more compact limestone so the fossils tend to be more dimensional and better preserved. The three separate fossil fish murals which form the triptych contain a variety of large and small fossils. They include: five Diplomystus dentatus in sizes up to 42 cm; a 32 cm Mioplosus labracoides; three Priscacara serrata in sizes up to 20 cm; and ten Knightia eocaena, in sizes up to 16.5 cm. The stone contains other trace fossils. The stone slabs have been affixed to a wood backing, with finished and beveled edges. Each of the three sections has a two-part aluminum, French cleat on the back for ease of hanging. Each panel weighing 68 lbs. Each panel measuring 120 x 60 cm. Dimensions totales :120 x 181 x 3.5 cm(3) This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU.
