KOKEI: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF AMA STRUGGLING WITH AN OCTOPUSSigned Kokei 虎溪Japan, Kuwana, Ise province, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Intricately carved, the intertwined couple forming an unlikely pair and compact netsuke. The diver girl ensnared in the octopus' tentacles, with one hand she feebly pushes the face of the octopus away who presses its funnel shaped mouth forward, the other hand while armed with an awabi (an erotic allusion), appears hesitant to strike the octopus as its limbs reach forth to caress and support Ama as she leans back in pleasure. Naturalistic himotoshi formed by the crashing waves and tentacles to the base.HEIGHT 3.7 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear. Restoration to foot.Provenance: From the collection of Teddy Hahn, Darmstadt. Theodor “Teddy” Hahn was a well-known and respected collector of netsuke and other Asian works of art. After spending time in museums to study the early cultures of the world, finding particular interest in their sculptures, he began collecting, remarking “I somehow knew it would have a profound influence on my life. How right I was. And how happy I have been.”Literature comparison:Compare a closely related wood netsuke of Ama struggling with an octopus, the only other documented example signed Kokei, illustrated in the International Netsuke Society Journal (INSJ), 1999, vol. 19, no. 3, p. 60: 9.
Rousseau (Jean Jacques) A Treatise on the Social Compact: or The Principles of Politic Law, first edition in English, 3pp. advertisements at end, contemporary annotation to pp. 2 & 3, otherwise remarkably clean internally, endpapers browned, contemporary calf, a little rubbed, lacking most of morroco spine label, [PMM 270], 8vo, for T. Becket and P. A. de Hondt, 1764.⁂ Rare philosophical treatise by Genevan philosopher instrumental in the Age of Enlightenment. "The Contrat Social remains Rousseau's greatest work... Rousseau believed passionately in what he wrote, and when in 1789 a similar emotion was released on a national scale, the Contrat Social came into its own as the bible of the revolutionaries in building their ideal state. Still in print, translated into every language in cheap editions and paperbacks, it remains a crucial document of egalitarian government" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 270, discussing the 1762 first edition).

A Rare & Early Powell & Lealand 1/50In Objective, English, c.1870, the can engraved '1/50In Powell & Lealand JL' and to the objective 'Powell & Lealand No.8' The 1/50th objective is engraved with the low serial number "No 8." The first example of this of this particular lens, now housed in the R.M.S. collection, and was made for Dr. Lionel Beale on October 15th, 1864. Footnote: Very few of these 1/50th objectives were made. The compact focal length and angular aperture, no better than the 1/16th objective, the impracticality in using the lens combined with little enhancement in resolution over lower-power objectives, and of course the huge price ( £31 10s) resulted in few sales. Still, it represents the very height of optical engineering of the mid-Victorian era.
