Julius Caesar, Denarius, military mint travelling with Caesar, 49-8, elephant walking right, trampling on dragon before, caesar in exergue, rev. emblems of the pontificate; simpulum, aspergillum, axe and apex, 3.96g/5h (Craw. 443/1; CRI 9; BMCRR Gaul 27-30; RSC 49). Centrally struck on a compact flan, about extremely fine and beautifully toned £700-£900 --- Caesar’s first military type, issued unconstitutionally following the crossing of the Rubicon in January 49. As no moneyer was involved the types must have been Caesar’s personal choice. Today the meaning behind the elephant is obscure; perhaps it was a generic declaration of power, of the struggle of good (the elephant) over evil (the dragon); or perhaps it represents another canting type, caesai being Punic for Elephant-slayer.
