This compact was a gift from General Charles de Gaulle to the Countess Wavell, wife of Field Marshall Earl Wavell, Viceroy of India, 1943-47 (length 7.5cm, 108g)

Boucheron and Cartier: a matched art deco make up suite in black enamel set with diamonds, the principal piece a rectangular hinged compact by Boucheron in 18ct white gold, enamelled black, with a long line of greek key decoration set with rose cut diamonds down the front, with twin triangular suspensory loops echoing the cut-corner outline; the interior of polished yellow gold with a bevel-edged mirror, a powder compact with hinged lid inscribed 'Francesca 1932' and a hinged retractable oval lipstick holder; signed 'Boucheron Paris', and stamped severally with French eagle's head mark, some in hexagonal punch outline; 7.0 x 4.6cm; together with a narrow rectangular black lacquer and diamond retractable lipstick holder by Cartier, embellished with a millegrain-edged line of rose cut diamonds with four larger stones, two of which form the catch release and retractable push, the interior reeded and signed 'Cartier, Paris Londres New York', the holder suspended from an oval link set both sides with further rose diamonds (one tiny stone lacking), and attached to a large lacquer hoop set with diamonds and a looped chain of similar black links and two seed pearls; overall length 11cm.
