[Japanese Lilies]. Picture[s] of the various kinds of Japanese Lilies by N. Uchiyama [so titled on upper cover], manuscript, [?Tokyo], late 19th century, 25 full-page ink and watercolour drawings on laid rice paper, entirely uncaptioned and without text, some blank interleaving, original stitched blue wrappers with manuscript paper label to upper cover, slightly rubbed and faded, folio (385 x 275 mm)QTY: (1)NOTE:Rare. A typed list of all the specimens is included with the lot, identified in a letter sent by Moto’o Shimizu on headed paper of Aichi Prefecture Horticultural Experiment Station, 19 April 1954. The letter to an unidentified recipient begins by stating that ‘It is regrettable that is quite unknown when this book was published’ but speculating late 19th or early 20th century.‘The English title suggests that this catalogue was targeted at nurseries overseas. The manuscript, made on very large paper, was distributed by Uchiyama Nursery, a successful establishment in Sugamo, Tokyo. Uchiyama Cyotaro, the nursery owner in the mid-1800s, introduced many flowers which remain familiar to us today. Among them is ‘Chotaro yuri’, a compact form of Lilium longiflorum with white striped leaves.’ (Flower Obsession. Plant Collecting in East Asia 1600s-1900s. An Edwardian silver and enamel dressing table box, the cover decorated with poppies, hallmarked by Douglas Clock Co Ltd, Birmingham, 1904 and an Elizabeth II silver and enamel powder puff, the cover decorated with red roses, mirrored interior, hallmarked by Walker & Hall, Birmingham, 1959, combined gross weight approx. 5.63 ozt (175.1 grams) (2), box approx. 7cm diam x 4cm high, compact approx. 7.8cm diam. RMS Queen Mary Interest: a George VI silver circular compact case, having engine turned outer design and vibrant blue guilloche enamelled cover, interior missing mirrored section and later enamelled inside cover, also with later oval enamelled plaque depicting RMS Queen Mary, silver hallmarked by Adie Bros, Birmingham, 1940, approx. 7.1cm diameter, together with a RMS Queen Mary medal, circa 1930s, Lewis's Ship, made of aluminium. (2) Further details: as mentioned later oval plaque and enamelled interior so no mirror; minor nicks and wear, slight tarnishing, medal with nicks and wear.
