A JADE 'SQUIRREL' PENDANT, NEOLITHIC PERIODChina, Neolithic period, possibly Hongshan culture, c. 4700-2900 BC. Boldly carved as a small animal with bulging eyes and bulbous tail, holding both hands up toward the mouth, appearing like a squirrel eating fruit. The jade is drilled with several holes for suspension as a pendant. The opaque stone is of a greenish-yellow tone with extensive deep russet veining and shading.Condition: Good condition with minor wear, a short crack around the center, and nibbling. A JADE CEREMONIAL BLADE, GUI, QIJIA CULTUREChina, c. 2200-1600 BC. The skillfully shaped, short blade tapers to an arched cutting edge with rounded edges. The hafting bar is narrow and pierced with a round hole. A single, incised groove runs horizontally through the center of the blade and gently fades before reaching the cutting edge. Two pairs of four symmetrical notches carved on the sides. The partly translucent stone of a pale celadon hue with dark gray clouding, icy veining, and russet inclusions. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, weathering, as well as tiny chips which have smoothened over time. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE MOTTLED CELADON JADE ZHANG BLADE, QIJIA CULTUREChina, early Bronze Age, Qijia culture, c. 2200-1600 BCStriking in its form, this long ZHANG blade boasts a curved cutting edge, thus creating a double-pointed form. The asymmetrical, inner curvature is typical for long ceremonial ZHANG blades. Two neatly carved flanges flank the tang pierced with one circular hole. A strong, perfectly straight line runs along the blade. The semi-translucent jade is of a celadon hue with cloudy inclusions of brownish colors, green spots, and darker veins.Condition: Very good condition with natural inclusions, calcification, and fissures. A CELADON JADE NOTCHED YUE AXE, QIJIA CULTUREChina, early Bronze Age, Qijia culture, c. 2200-1600 BC Of tapering form with a wide and straight cutting edge, well-carved form a beautiful, translucent celadon stone with delicate, brownish, and milky white inclusions, as well as with miniature, spinach-green spots. A large, circular hole is pierced in the center and the sides are embellished with notches. The well-polished surface is perfectly smooth. A JADE NOTCHED YUE AXE, QIJIA CULTUREChina, Qijia culture, c. 2200-1600 BC. Of tapering form with a wide and straight cutting edge, well-carved from a beautiful, translucent celadon stone with delicate, brownish, grayish, and milky white inclusions, as well as russet spots. A large, circular hole is pierced in the center topped by two smaller symmetrical holes and the sides are embellished with notches. The well-polished surface is perfectly smooth. A SEA-GREEN THREE SECTION JADE BI DISC, QIJIA CULTUREChina, early Bronze Age, Qijia culture, c. 2200-1600 BC All three flat arc-shaped sections are carved from the same piece of semi-translucent, sea-green jade varied by large, milky-white and brownish inclusions. Each section is fashioned with rounded edges and conical holes pierced at each end for the three parts to be attached to each other. A SUPERB PALE CELADON JADE NOTCHED AXE, QI, SHANG DYNASTYChina, Shang Dynasty, c. 2070-1600 BCThis Qi jade axe exhibits impressive elegance and meticulous craftsmanship quality. It features a wide and gracefully curved cutting edge that tapers towards the tip, with a large circular hole at the center. The sides of the axe are adorned with five symmetrical notches. Above the central hole, two parallel, straight grooved lines run horizontally. The surface of the axe is exceptionally well-polished. A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ORNAMENT, WESTERN ZHOUChina, Western Zhou dynasty, 10th-9th century BC. The pendant of flattened, slightly arched form with notched edges is carved to both sides with stylized human or zoomorphic figures, the contours and details rendered with double-line grooves. A small aperture drilled to the top for suspension. The translucent stone is of an even white tone with russet veins and patches as well as a small area of opaque brownish-cream to one edge.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and nibbling.Provenance: Estate of Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022), co-founder of Galerie Zacke, thence by descent.Weight: 88.2 gDimensions: Length 13.8 cmLiterature comparison: The style of the present jade ornament, combining human and animal features with the contours rendered in double-line grooves, is characteristic of the Western Zhou period. A similar example depicting a phoenix and dragon and of slightly different shape is in the National Palace Museum Collection (acquisition no. gouyu 611), illustrated in Art in Quest of Heaven and Truth - Chinese Jades through the Ages, Taipei, 2012, pl. 5-4-6. Another example depicting similar motifs was excavated in Rujiazhuang, its line drawing illustrated in Teng Shu-p'ing, Collectors' Exhibition of Archaic Chinese Jades, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1999, p. 35, pl. 30:5. Pierced to the neck allowing for suspension as a pendant.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minimal smoothened nibbling. Provenance: Swedish private collection, acquired in Stockholm in 2005.Weight: 10 g Dimensions: Height 5.5 cmThe stag is an animal which was occasionally represented in jade during the Western Zhou period, following contacts with the steppe nomads of the North from whom the imagery derived. However, compared to their nomadic prototypes, the Chinese jade stags have sturdier bodies and more exuberant horns. In Western Zhou graves, jade figurines of stags with magnificent horns have mostly been found in the tombs of women.LITERATURE COMPARISON: A similar example was unearthed in 1974 from a Western Zhou tomb at Rujiazhuang, Baoji, Shaanxi, see Rawson 2013, p.59 and note 87. A WHITE JADE PENDANT, HUANG, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 東周白玉璜China, 8th-3rd century BC. Each side of the arc-shaped huang is intricately carved with a dense network of scrolling spirals, both raised and neatly incised, the end sections carved with an abstract dragon head with slit mouth and rectangular notches at the edges. The translucent stone is of a white tone with few dark specks and cloudy inclusions.Provenance: From the private collection of Professor Filippo Salviati, Rome, Italy.
