MACKLIN MARIA: (1733-1781) English Actress, Singer and Dancer, daughter of Charles Macklin (1690-1797) Irish Actor and Dramatist, famous for his performances of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. Both Macklins are associated with the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. A good A.L.S., 'yr. most affect. & Dutiful but uneasy Daughter M: Macklin', three pages, small folio, London, 6th May 1772, to her father, Charles Macklin in Dublin. Macklin announces 'I flatter'd myself Dr. Sr. that I was very like you while I was mustering my Troops & I asure you I was not a little proud of it' and continues 'However the Farce went off very well. At the Beginning there were some people in the House who were very pury & had a mind to hiss. They came to see the Farce murder'd & to damn it. But they were fairly disappointed , for it was so decent they were oblig'd to applaud. All the capital strokes as usual were notic'd'. The actress further adds 'Fox was much superior to Shuter all thro the song he sung with great Humour & was encord in it. Lewis play'd very well, & upon the whole we came off with Honour' although admits 'but I trembled at first till by Degrees the audience brighten'd up. Happy was I when it was over: tho I kept up my spirits amazingly, & indeed neither the…..House nor all the Plagues I had were half so affecting to me as the thoughts of you being ill'. Macklin continues to provide her father with other theatrical news, observing 'In all this Trouble there was not a manager to be seen. Coleman is at Bath & has been for near two months. Leake, Harris and Dagge about Town but seldom at the Theatre, the whole conduct of it left to Younger. Coleman writes to him that he has neither leisure nor inclination to treat with the Performers, that if they want him the Prompter must write to him. He refus'd Lewis the new scenes in Mother Shipton tho' many others have had them' and also stating 'Lewis ask'd me for Love a la Mode saying you shou'd  have your own Price for it. I hope you will think I did right to refuse it as I thought it wou'd hurt it more than it had already been', further remarking 'I told him the Property was not mine & that as there was not Time to have your answer I cou'd not venture to let him have it, least you shou'd not approve of it'. Macklin concludes her letter by informing her father about various rents that have been paid by his tenants and in a lengthy postscript also writes 'pray let me know if there are any Books of any kind that you want that I can send you. Compts. from many People who enquire after you & wish you better….'With autograph address panel to the verso addressed to Charles Macklin in Dublin and with minor remnants of a red wax seal (two areas of paper loss and some large tears where originally broken) and a small docket in the hand of Charles Macklin. Rare. A few minor, neat splits at the edges of some folds, a few light stains and minor age wear, otherwise about VG   It is possible that the present letter was one of a small series previously sold by Sotheby's on 16th December 1824, their catalogue description for lot 231 in the sale reading 'Macklin (Maria), six original letters to her Father, written on thirty-three pages, forming a Diary of all the Theatrical Events during Charles Macklin's absence in Dublin. They are dated at various periods from 1772. These letters will be found highly interesting, for they detail very minutely the merits and success of the various Actors of the Day and are of themselves a complete History of that period'.

*A Rare Great War ‘Senussi Campaign’ Armoured Cars M.C. Group of 7 awarded to Lieutenant John Davies Lawrence, Manchester Regiment, who commanded a Rolls Royce armoured car in action at the Dakhla Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert while on secondment to the Motor Machine Gun Corps, capturing 4 officers and 109 other ranks in the process. He later served as a ‘Bimbashi’ in the Equatorial Battalion of the Egyptian Army as part of the Turkhana Patrol in 1918, and also took part in the fighting against the Aliab Dinka during the uprising of late 1919, comprising: Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse engraved in contemporary upright capitals (2nd Lieut. J. D. Lawrence. Manchester Regt Nov. 1915); 1914-15 Star (2 Lieut. J. D. Lawrence. Manch. R.); British War and Victory Medals, the latter with M.i.D. bronze spray of oak leaves (Lieut. J.D.Lawrence.); Africa General Service, 1902-1956, single clasp, East Africa 1918 (Lieut. J. D. Lawrence. Equatorial Bn. E.A.); Egypt, Order of the Nile, Officer’s 4th class breast badge in silver and enamels; Khedive’s Sudan, 1910-22, 2nd issue, single clasp, Aliab Dinka (Lieut. Manch. R.), with impressed naming; together with a matching set of seven individual dress miniatures, all mounted together in glass-fronted wooden case, about extremely fine, and rare  (14)   M.C.: London Gazette: 4 June 1917 - ‘Whilst repairing one of his two Armoured Cars in the desert (he) received a helio message from W.D.A. to proceed at once to operate against DAKHLA OASIS in conjunction with No. 1 L.C. patrol*. After working all day on the car he was able to start at midnight and owing to his skill in guiding the car over unknown ground was able to overtake the L.C. patrol 10 miles short of DAKHLA, having travelled all night. The Senussi main camp at AIN BARABI being found evacuated he pushed on to TENEDA taking 1 officer and 2 other ranks prisoners. Next morning pushing on quickly to BUDHKULU a party of 50 Senussi were encountered and after a short fight surrendered. Here the cars had to wait for supplies and on their arrival, he proceeded to MUT where another 50 prisoners were taken, 3 officers and 7 other ranks of whom were ex-Coastguard. Work in the Oasis itself was difficult for the Armoured Car owing to the narrow bridges.’   M.I.D.: London Gazette: 6 July 1917 (For Senussi campaign), and 18 January 1921 (For Aliab Dinka)   Egypt, Order of the Nile: London Gazette: 4 August 1922 - ‘for good services rendered during operations against the Aliab Dinkas in the Mongalla Province, Sudan, 1919-20’.   Lieutenant John ‘Jack’ Lawrence was born on 19 February 1896, in the suburb of Jeppestown, Johannesburg, South Africa, the son of Henry Lakin Lawrence, a Mining Engineer, and Emma Lawrence. Educated at Horton Preparatory School, Ickwellbury, Bedfordshire, and then at Tonbridge School (1911-1913), he proved himself as a prominent sportsman, winning school colours at cricket, football and rugby. Here he also took up an interest in the military, serving as a Sergeant Cadet with the Tonbridge School Contingent, Junior Division, Officers Training Corps.   He was initially apprenticed to the Midland Railway from 1913 to August 1914, but on 9 April 1914 he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 8th (Ardwick) Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Upon the outbreak of war, Lawrence was posted to Palestine on 10 September 1914, returning to the U.K. in March 1915 having been ordered to attend the Royal Military College. While at Sandhurst, on 20 October 1915, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army (Manchester Regiment) and posted for employment with M.G.C.   In March 1916 he was posted to Egypt, and he was officially seconded to the Motor Machine Gun Service on 20 October 1915. In Egypt he joined the Armoured Cars of Nos. 11 & 12 Light Armoured Motor Brigade, M.G.C., Desert Column, taking part in the Senussi Campaign in the Western Desert. His unit consisted of one Rolls Royce Armoured Car (commanded by Lawrence himself) and tender; six Ford cars and 12 motor bicycles. The remaining personnel consisted of two officers and 58 other ranks, with two Vickers and two Lewis guns in support. For his service in the Senussi campaign Lawrence was mentioned in despatches and awarded the M.C.   Lawrence left the M.G.C. on 10 September 1917, being afterwards transferred to the Equatorial Battalion, part of the Egyptian Army which was serving in the Sudan. Placed in command of No. 2 Company of the Equatorial Battalion, he took part in operations against the Northern Turkhana, Marille, Donyiro in Southern Sudan , west of Lake Rudolf, between 20 April and 19 June 1918 (British Battles and Medals, refers). Known as the ‘Turkhana Patrol’ this patrol was sent out to oppose and disrupt tribal slaving and cattle raiding, and saw some heavy fighting. The campaign itself was commanded by Major Richard Finch White, Essex Regiment, and having been present, for the duration with the , Lawrence became one of just seven British Officers, serving with the Egyptian Army, to earn the Africa General Service Medal with clasp “East Africa 1918”.   At the end of October 1919 a war-party of the Aliab Dinka attacked a police-post south of Bor (now capital of the Jonglei State in South Sudan), at Menkamon on the White Nile, killing eight policemen. This outbreak of violence quickly spread and Major Chancey Stigand, Egyptian Army (and Governor of Mondalla Province) sought to stamp it out with a few companies of the Equatorial Battalion, including those under the command of Lawrence (the article ‘Chauncey Stigand, Soldier, Governor and Writer’ by Henry Keown-Boyd, refers). As explained in the same article, owing to a shortage of officers Stigand accompanied one of the patrols himself, whereupon it was twice ambushed in quick succession overnight and in the morning on 8 December, in the long grass by several hundred Aliab Dinka tribesmen. Stigand himself, the Officer Commanding Troops Kaimakam (Lieutenant-Colonel) White, Yuzbashi (Captain) Saad Osman and twenty-four other ranks and carriers were killed. The remaining four officers, Bimbashi F. C. Roberts, V.C., D.S.O., M.C., (Worcs Regt), Bimbashi W. H. Wynne-Finch, M.C. (Scots Guards), A. H. Kent–Lemon (York & Lancs) and John Davies Lawrence, M.C. (Manch. Regt) were able to rally and restore the situation despite these losses, making a fighting and reaching Tombe on 13 December 1919. Keown-Boyd writes that: ‘The four surviving British officers - all veterans of the Great War and accustomed to reacting swiftly in desperate circumstances, rallied their companies and drove off the enemy, thus averting even greater disaster.’   Lieutenant Lawrence subsequently took part in the retaliatory operations against the Aliab Dinka, Bor Dinka and Mandari tribes in early 1920, for which he was awarded the Khedives Sudan medal with clasp ‘Aliab Dinka’. He was also awarded the Order of the Nile ‘for good services rendered’ during these difficult operations. Unfortunately, it appears that Lawrence contracted Malaria during this period, as he was examined by a Medical Board on 14 October 1920, which confirmed his disability from malaria (rated at 50%). After a lengthy period of treatment (and after his third Medical Board examination, on 6 January 1921) he was discharged to return to his regiment, relinquishing his commission on the same day.  ... Levaillant, FrançoisHistoire Naturelle d'une Partie d'Oiseaux Nouveaux et Rares de l'Amérique et des Indes. Paris: J.E. Gabriel Dufour & Amsterdam, 1801 [-02]. First edition, Volume 1 (all published), large 4to (352 x258mm.), [4], 4, 152; half-title, 49 fine plates printed in colour and finished by hand, contemporary red half morocco, spine gilt, uncut, short split at head and base of upper joint, short split at head of lower joint, a little light spotting to some platesProvenance:The Library of a Country House.Note: First edition. Originally published in eight parts, Levaillant's Histoire Naturelle d'une Partie d'Oiseaux Nouveaux et Rares de l'Amérique et des Indes was available in three states: folio, with both coloured and uncoloured plates; large quarto, as here, with coloured plates only; and quarto, with uncoloured plates only. The fine portraits are of birds from the Bucerotidae and the Cotingidae families that Levaillant did not include in his earlier work “Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d’Afrique” (1799-1802). "These plates were printed by Langlois, who did almost all the colour-printing for Levaillant .... French colour-printing of this period ... has never been surpassed" (Fine Bird Books). François Levaillant (1753-1824) was born in Paramaribo, the capital of Dutch Guiana, the son of the French consul. He was sent by Jacob Temminck to South Africa where he collected and sent back over 2000 bird skins, which were studied by Jacob's son, Coenraad Jacob Temminck, and housed in the collection of the Natural History Museum at Leiden. On his return to Paris Levaillant published two best-selling accounts of his voyages in South Africa and the present work, followed by the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique (1796–1808, 6 vols.) with drawings by Jacques Barraband, Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis (1801–06), Histoire naturelle des cotingas et des todiers (1804) and Histoire naturelle des calaos (1804). Levaillant was opposed to the systematic nomenclature introduced by Carl Linnaeus and only gave French names to the species that he discovered. When the birds were later given binomial names by other naturalists, quite a few were named after him including Levaillant's barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii), Levaillant's cisticola, Levaillant's cuckoo, Levaillant's parrot, Levaillant's tchagra and Levaillant's woodpecker (Picus vaillantii). "Levaillant was, until exceeded by Gould (and until now only by him), the producer of the most comprehensive series of works on exotic birds” (Fine Bird Books, p. 118). A pair of 16th century Gothic Andirons, the capped pillars with hatched decoration, a shield initialled IHS, on gothic arched feet 43 x 25 x 43cm (17 x 10 x 17in) Literature: Shuffrey (L.A), The English Fireplace and Its Accessories, published by Batsford, 1912, p.133, fig.126, Godlington, Kent Notes:Dr Brian Gilmour PhD, Dip Cons, FSA, FCIFA, FRMS, Archaeometallurgy and Archaeology, 20, Squitchey Lane, Oxford OX2 7LB Tel: 01865 552294 Mob: 0776 233 8189 Email: bjjg1243@gmail.com Early metalworking: Technology, analysis and appraisal Work carried out: Detailed assessment Report no: 560 Artefact type/description: Pair of andirons Reference no: RC1 Estimated stylistic date: c 16/17th century AD Report for: Richard Crowther Date: 09-06-2018 Assessment result/recommendation: Acceptance as 16th/17th century Report: See below Introduction, description and preliminary assessment: Fig. 1: Front view of this distinctive pair of andirons The front part of this pair of heavy cast iron andirons consisted in each case of an upper column with a capital of curly ionic form, the rectangular-section columns having diagonal reeded decoration below which was a form of shield with Gothic lettering – possibly IM – on either side of which projected two solid, curved, rectangular section Gothic style feet (fig. 1). The surface of each andiron had a pitted and worn appearance consistent with probable long use. Height: 28cms Depth (front to back): 43cm Analytical examination by metallography: A small sample was taken from the foot of one of the andirons and this was mounted and prepared for metallographic analysis. The aim of this was to look at the structure of the cast iron to determine whether this was consistent either with a 16th or 17th century origin as suggested by the style or a 19th century reproduction, these being the two likely alternatives. Fig. 2: View showing a ‘mottled’ cast iron structure with characteristic dark ‘rosettes’ graphite dispersed amongst a hypo-eutectic white cast iron matrix with a clear (fir tree-like) dendritic structure visible between the rosettes (scale x75 as shown here). Fig. 3: Detailed view of the same structure showing the flake structure of the graphite rosettes and the ladder-like dendrites in between (Magnification x300). Metallographic results: The structure visible in section shows that these andirons consist of ‘mottled’ cast iron, a transitional form of cast iron with a matrix which shows up as a white cast iron but which has ‘rosettes’ of graphite scattered through the structure, graphite being typical of an incipient form of grey cast iron. Thus the metal is a transitional form of cast iron with characteristics of both a white cast iron, where the carbon present has not had time to transform to graphite, and a grey cast iron where most of the carbon present has transformed to graphite during the solidification process. In white cast iron – as in the matrix here – the carbon in the metal is mostly present in chemically combined forms which make the metal much harder and more brittle. The dendritic dispersion visible is a phenomenon typical in a hypo-eutectic white cast iron, one with a carbon content between about 3.0 and 3.5%. Discussion and conclusion: When a cast iron cools and solidifies it can form either an all white cast iron structure, if the cooling rate is rapid enough, or a grey cast iron if the cooling rate is slow enough. There is a third possibility which is that it can form an intermediate ‘mottled’ form as we see in the case of these andirons, this being the consequence of an intermediate cooling rate. The cooling rate is clearly affected by the bulk volume of an iron casting and we can expect this to be more or less the same for any particular bulk of casting. The cooling rate – in terms of what type of cast iron (white or grey) results can also be affected or controlled by other elements present in the metal, such as silicon and sulphur, and these are a reflection of the cast iron production (smelting) process being used at any particular time. Smelting conditions changed during the development of the Industrial Revolution and the consequence of this is that ‘mottled’ cast iron is the most typical form of cast iron found in castings such as andirons and fire-backs of the 16th and 17th centuries. By the 19th century the smelting processes had changed and castings of this kind are almost always found to be made of grey cast ion. In the case of the andirons studied here the general appearance and worn nature of the andirons and their structure indicate them to be intact surviving examples of 16th/17th century production, probably from the Weald of the Sussex/Kent border region.

Two prints, one a Chinese scene the other Venice. Each 14 cm x 18.5 cm, in Edwardian gilt frames. CONDITION REPORT: The picture frame housing the scene of Venice has numerous small age splits throughout the moulded plasterwork frame. The left tip and centre tip of the central scroll have been restored. A small section of the shell scroll to the lower left hand corner has been restored. Most likely this picture frame has been re-gilded early on in its life. The matching picture frame housing the scene of the China is slightly duller in colour throughout than its partner frame but has less stress fractures to the moulded plasterwork. There is a small hole to the bottom right hand corner capital C scroll. Other than those faults mentioned all appears to be intact.
