Copiose annotazioni in greco, forse riferibili a Leone Allacci. Collation: α4, 2α-ω4, Α-Ε4. [4], 115 [i.e. 116] leaves. Text in Greek; in Latin Du Tillet's dedicatory epistle to Cardinal François de Tournon. Woodcut printer's device on the title-page; blank space for capital on fol. α1r, with guide letter. Early 20th-century vellum over pasteboards. Smooth spine, decorated with small gilt tools, title lettered in gold on morocco lettering-piece; gilt inscription 'Postille Allacci' on other lettering-piece. Pale blue silk bookmark (slightly faded). The original flyleaves preserved. A good copy, leaves uniformly browned, foxing. A few early ink stains, minor marginal tears to a few leaves. Small loss to the blank outer margin of fol. ω2. Copiously annotated in Greek, possibly by Leone Allacci. Latin marginalia in two different hands. Cutting from an Italian sale catalogue, pasted on the front pastedown and describing this copy (lot 781). The note 'v.C.6' inked on the title-page, possibly attesting the provenance from the Bibliotheca Palatina of Heidelberg.Remarkable collection of apostolic decrees issued from the First Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325) to the Second Councli of Nicaea (A.D. 787), and edited by Jean Du Tillet (d. 1570), secretary to King Francis I. The volume is copiously annotated - mostly in Greek - by different hands, one of them could be referred to the renowned Greek-born scholar Leo Allatius (1586-1669), scriptor for Greek at the Vatican Library. In 1622 he managed and supervised the packing and transportation to Rome of the celebrated Palatine Library of Heidelberg, part of the booty assigned to Pope Gregorius XV after the victory over the Palatinate, during the Thirty Years War. The books were quickly listed and divided into 196 numbered crates, whose number was also written on the upper cover or the title-page of every item. The volumes were incorporated in the Vatican Library in 1623, and Allacci had set twelve crates aside for himself, mostly containing Greek books. He bequeathed them to the Collegium Graecum in Rome for the use of the students, and the collection was later partly sold. The note 'v.C.6' inked on the title-page of this copy of the Apostolorum et Sanctorum Conciliorum decreta could be referred to the 'capsa' or crate no. 6, a possible evidence of its provenance from the Heidelberg Library. Pettegree-Walshby, French Books 67032.

Kings of Armenia, Tigranes IV (Restored) and Erato Æ18. 2 BC-AD 1. Jugate busts of Tigranes, wearing tiara and diadem, and Erato right / [???????C??], the two peaks of Mount Ararat, as seen from the Armenian capital Artaxata; A in exergue. F. Kovacs, Tigranes IV, V, and VI: New Attributions, AJN 20, 5; CAA 128 (Tigranes II?); AC 122 (Tigranes II). 3.06g, 18mm, 12h. Fine. Extremely Rare. From the property of a European Gentleman, privately purchased from Numismatik Lanz 2016-7. This remarkable type was only discovered in 1978, being first published by Bedoukian. Admitting that he could not arrive at a certain attribution, he placed it in his catalogue under Tigranes II, stating that 'it may have been struck by Tigranes when he conquered Cappadocia in 93 BC, forcing the ruling king, Ariobarzanes I, to flee to Rome,' and that the double-peaked mountain on the reverse resembled Mt. Argaios in Cappadocia (CAA pg. 24). It seems that Nercessian merely followed Bedoukian in his placing the coin under Tigranes II without further explanation, although he included a footnote telling the reader to see additional information in a subsequent chapter which he then neglected to provide. More recently Frank Kovacs convincingly argued for assigning the coin to Tigranes IV and his sister-queen Erato. He based his argument on four points: the reverse legend ???????C?? ('Friend of Caesar'), which was previously misread by Bedoukian as KAICAPE?N; the regnal year A in the exergue, which 'implies that Tigranes' earlier reign under the Parthian aegis was illegitimate and that Rome alone had the right to crown the king of Armenia,' and draws parallels to similar instances in the coinages issued by other client kingdoms of Rome; the extreme scarcity of the coins which of course better fit this king's short reign than do the plethora of types and number of extant pieces assigned to him by both Bedoukian and Nercessian; and finally the beardless portrait better fits the youthful son of Tigranes III than do the previously assigned bearded types.

North Africa, Carthage AR Shekel. Time of Hannibal. Carthago Nova, circa 218-206 BC. Bare male head (Hannibal?) left / Horse right, palm tree behind. Villaronga 1973, 142; CNH p. 71, 64; BMC 104. 5.96g, 21mm, 12h. Very Fine. Very Rare. This coin is conventionally believed to carry the portrait of Hannibal on the obverse. In 237 BC Hamilcar Barca, after having lost the First Punic War against Rome, but having won the Mercenary War against the Libyans, disembarked at Gadir with a Carthaginian expedition with the purpose of "re-establishing Carthaginian authority in Iberia" (Polybios, Histories, 2.1.6), and within 9 years he had expanded the territory of Carthage well into the Iberian peninsula, securing control of the southern mining district of Baetica and Sierra Morena, before dying in battle in 228. Hamilcar was succeeded by his son-in-law Hasdrubal the Fair who expanded the new province by skilful diplomacy and consolidated it with the foundation of Akra Leuka, Mahon and finally in 227, Qart Hadasht (Latin: Carthago Nova) as his capital. After his untimely death in 221 he was succeeded by Hannibal (247-182), oldest son of Hamilcar Barca, and Hamilcar's second son Hasdrubal (245-207 BC). The Barcids now wielded control over much of the mineral rich Mediterranean side of the peninsula until 219 when Hannibal made the fateful move of taking and sacking Saguntum, a well established Roman ally. The wholesale slaughter of this Roman ally's population, and the arrogance with which the Roman ambassadors sent to Carthage to seek redress were met, led directly to the Second Punic War: the great statesman Quintus Fabius, speaking to the Carthaginian senate, gathered a fold of his toga to his chest and held it out, saying "Here, we bring you peace and war. Take which you will." The Carthaginians replied "Whichever you please - we do not care." Fabius let the fold drop and proclaimed "We give you war."

Marc Antony and Octavia AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm of Ephesus, Ionia. 39 BC. M•ANTONIVS•IMP•COS•DESIG•ITER•ET•TERT, head of Antony right, wearing ivy wreath, lituus below; all within wreath of ivy and flowers / III•VIR• R•P•C, head of Octavia atop cista mystica, between twisting snakes. RPC I 2201; RSC 2; CRI 262; BMCRR East 133. 12.01g, 27mm, 12h. Very Fine. Toned. Following the death of Octavia's first husband C. Claudius Marcellus in 40 BC, her marriage to Antony sought to seal the Pact of Brundisium in which it had been agreed that Octavian would assume control of the west and Antony of the east. The striking of this type cements the agreement before the people of Ephesus, an important city, later made the capital of Asia Minor by Augustus in 27 BC. Octavia spent two winters with Antony in Athens and in 37 BC assisted in securing the Triumvirate for another 5 years at the Pact of Tarentum. Following this, Antony returned to the east and, having left Octavia behind, lived with Cleopatra in Egypt. Although they divorced in 32 BC, after Antony's defeat at the Battle of Actium and subsequent suicide, Octavia raised all of his surviving children by Fulvia and Cleopatra, along with her own.

‡ABBASID, AL-MUQTADIR (295-320h), Dinar, Madinat Zaranj 302h. Obverse: without name of heir in field. Weight: 4.15g References: Bernardi 237Of RRR = Lloyd, Saffarids GZA302. About extremely fine and excessively rare. For much of the third century Zaranj had been the centre of the powerful Saffarid dynasty, whose armies had come within 40 miles of capturing Baghdad itself during the early 260s. By the late 290s, however, the dynasty’s power was shrinking rapidly as a number of rivals struggled for supremacy. Saffarid authority in the region was temporarily extinguished when the Samanids captured Zaranj in 298h, but there was still strong local support for the dynasty and yet another local warlord, Muhammad b. Hurmuz, seized power there in the name of a young scion of the Saffarid family. The Samanids quickly returned to suppress this revolt and duly retook Zaranj in 300h, leaving the Samanid amir Ahmad b. Isma‘il as the caliph’s designated governor of Sijistan. But Ahmad himself was assassinated in the following year causing turmoil in the Samanid lands, and the Samanid general, Simjur Dawati, was forced out of Zaranj in 301h. Meanwhile, news that the Samanids no longer controlled Sijistan had reached the ears of the caliph through a local finance officer. While al-Muqtadir had been happy to offer the Samanids a degree of support and encouragement against the Saffarids, who represented a common enemy, he was not inclined to leave them in control of Sijistan now that an opportunity had come to reassert caliphal control in the region. Prompt action by the caliph’s vizier saw al-Muqtadir’s envoys received with great ceremony in Zaranj later that year, and so from 301h until 304h coins of standard Abbasid type were struck there. Silver dirhams all bear the provincial name Sijistan, while the extremely rare gold dinars, all of which bear the date 302h, have that of the capital Zaranj. This is the only year for which Abbasid dinars of Zaranj are known.

ROBERTS FREDERICK: (1832-1914) 1st Earl Roberts. British Field Marshal, one of the most successful Commanders of the 19th century who led the British forces to success in the Second Boer War. Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Khudaganj on 2nd January 1858 during the Indian Rebellion. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Roberts standing in a half length pose wearing his uniform and medals, including the Victoria Cross. Signed ('Roberts FM') in bold black fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Some very slight traces of former mounting to the upper edge of the verso. Together with an original printed slim folio announcement of the Proclamation of Martial Law made by Lord Roberts in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of Her Majesty's Forces in South Africa on 1st September 1900, number 16 of 1900 and with the Royal Arms of Queen Victoria at the head, the text printed in English and Afrikaans and stating, in part, 'Whereas the territory formerly known as the South African Republic, now the Transvaal, has been annexed by Her Majesty, and is now British Territory, and I, Frederick Sleigh, Baron Roberts of Kandahar and Waterford…..Commanding-in-Chief in South Africa, have been empowered to take all measures to make and enforce such laws as I may deem necessary for the maintenance of peace and order…..Now, therefore, I declare that the Transvaal is…..placed under Martial Law, as such Law is understood and administered in British Territory and by British Officers…..' Some light overall creasing and a few minor tears to the edges, G to VG, 2   The proclamation of Martial Law made by Lord Roberts in September 1900 came at a critical point of the second phase of the Second Boer War. With a greatly increased number of British troops under his command, Roberts had launched a successful offensive in 1900 to relieve the sieges at Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley. After securing Natal and the Cape Colony Britain was able to invade the Transvaal and the republic's capital, Pretoria, was ultimately captured in June 1900. In conventional terms the War was over and, with the South African Republic formally annexed, Roberts declared as much on 3rd September 1900. However, the Boers refused to surrender, and the War entered its third phase as the Boers reverted to guerrilla warfare. Two more years of surprise attacks orchestrated by the new Generals Louis Botha, Jan Smuts, Christiaan de Wet and Koos de la Rey followed until harsh British counter-measures brought them to terms.
